The Aiel and Malkier

OK so one thing that i have thought about. If the Aiel war (to kill Laman) was the first time the Aiel came out of the waste how did they know about Lan?

Malkier Fell before the aiel war so that would mean that they had never come out of the waste yet. Who LAn is isn't really all that common of knowledge on the randland side of the Spine so how did it get to be so famous among the Aiel in the space of 40 years (estimate) when they never really had any contact with that side of the world? I mean they saluted him as that at the begining of the New spring so it would have to have been before the Aiel war. I don't know. maybe you guys know something I don't.

I believe that Lan, and his story, became common knowledge among the Aiel during his campaigning against them during the Aiel war. The Aiel are very smart about warfare, and you can bet that the first thing they'd do is gather intelligence on the commanders facing them.

Well, I don't know how they would know Malkier's history, but Lan's story is certainly one that would resonate with them.  I think news of him would spread quickly around their campsites.  I don't think there's a lot of other wetlanders that impress them.

I was under the impression that they knew of him from the many times he had fought them in the blight and the wastes. It is implied in The Shadow Rising that he had many encounters with them. So I would guess they would learn what they could of him from those who they allowed to enter the waste. Pettlers and Gleemen, would know something of him I would guess at least those who had come through the borderlands. And they learned his history from them and lets not forget what the Wise One dream walkers can learn from the dream.

.... The Aeil are people who buy evey book a pettlers have and the story of Lans life is a good thing to write about have you ever thought of that????

That is actually a possibility I suppose. Not necessarily a book about Lan specifically, but a book about the downfall of Malkier at least is certainly possible.  And even if not in books, then perhaps in Gleemans tales, who are also allowed free access to the Waste.

About New Spring, I had a question about Lan. About the battle with the aiel. How do they recognize him. I guess I am more curious about the background how they recognize him and what they know of him and his back story.

RJ: They know quite a bit about his back story. They think he is a man who has much ji.

He has a one man war against something he cannot beat. And they recognized him by the crescents on his helmet

Jain Charin (Jain Farstrider) was involved in and around the Fall of Malkier (he captured Cowin Fairheart).  I would imagine there is something about it in The Travels of Jain Farstrider, one of the most widely distributed books we've seen.

Also, ones of the ways stories spread is through travelling Gleemen (Thom specifically offers to share those of Jain Farstrider in TEoTW) and peddlers, both of which are allowed in the Waste.

There are plenty of ways for the Aiel to know Lan's story, and as has been stated, it is one that would resonate deeply with them.  It would be passed around.

Additionally, Lan fought the Aiel alongside the Shienarans in the Eastern Marches (Ankor Dail?) prior to the Aiel War.

I actually remembered this. As I went further down the posts in the thread, i was thinking, that finally I can add something that it seems like most people have forgotten... doesnt seem like thats going to happen on this board.

If Jain had written about his homeland in his book wouldn't Rand and Perrin have figured out who Lan was before they got to Fal Dara? They had both read that book.

Maybe ... but then Jordan couldn't have told us the story.  ;D

Seriously though, I'm sure it doesn't have the whole story ... its just that books like that, plus tales from gleemen and peddlers, plus actual clashes with him on the Shienaran border, all add up to the Aiel knowing his story.  Like so many things, the phenomenon isn't traced to a single cause.

  • 2 years later...

Rhuarc in TDR recognises the Golden Crane ring and tells Nyn quite a lot about Malkier including the fact that the Malkieri often allied with Shienar in dances against the Aiel. Lan in TSR tells Moiraine that he knows quite a bit about Aiel from his scraps with them on behalf of Shienar. Masema hates Aiel because he's often fought them. Obviously there was plenty of contact - hostile maybe but contact. The Aiel would have taken note when Malkier went down.

The aiel also would have found out through trade with Cairhein prelamen. I imagine with their attentiveness to warfare they would ask about recent wars and borderland fights when they are in Cairhein. They would probably even ask about the White Tower and all sorts of news
