Costumes!

I actually really love the costuming on the show. There’s a couple choices I think are odd (Amalisa’s weird puffy skirt.) but for the most part I think the costumers did a good job of reinterpreting the books. It is definitely not what I pictured when I read, but it works. 
 

Anyways, Bernadette Banner is watching the show and has decided to recreate Moiraines Tar Valon gown so here’s a video of pure seamstress porn.

I dunno if the costumes and clothing really worked. 
I watch The green knight recently and the designs were excellent. Really complimented each character as well. 
the main thing was how Gawain’s clothing didn’t look new or store bought and you could tell from his clothing as the film progressed that he was on an arduous journey. 
 

I like Nynaeve’s clothing in this. Practical and nothing too fancy yet. Also like how there was yellow and green in her costume.

Makes you wonder where they would source the material in a remote village using pre-15th century tech which I suppose would be the show/book era equivalent…I mean the dyes alone would be a struggle.

So that is why this is popping up on my recommendations ? (literally came here to share that video, too).

 

I really like Rand's coat (but that is because it is so similar to a coat I have had for decades. So I know it lasts, it is warm and useful and also looks awesome). Right now though that is the only stand out costume for me. I like the dress, too, but it is not exceptionally stunning or eye catching.

 

As far as I am concerned it isnt a make or break if the costumes arent stunning. But they can step up in next season.

Dyes are easy. You can do a lot with simple householf stuff or flowers, or plants, or fruit. It is really easy to make dyes.

I liked Moraine's outfits, hated the Amyrlin's, chuckled at Rand's woolly sweater and... noticed *cough* Alanna's dress.

 

The rest? Can't recall anything else memorable.

Oh wait, I think #1Mat had a cloth hoodie thing. 

 

That's all I got.

 

Edit: Stupid me... I kinda didn't mind the Whitecloak stuff. I suppose the outfits were suitably white ?

I found most of the characters costumes blended in and weren't too distracting which is a good thing for me. Only ones I noticed in a bad way was some of the armor in Fal Dara which seemed to bend in some shots much more than metal, seemed parts might have been plastic or rubber instead. Only one that stood out in a good way was that I also REALLY wanted Rand's cozy sweater. I just kept imagining Tam knitting it by the fire on a cold evening. So wholesome.

 

I enjoyed the small things like Rand having a much better coat than Mat, and Moiraine having separate traveling clothes and white tower clothes. I was not a big fan of Nyneave's outfit at first because it felt kinda bulky and dorky, but the more I thought about her obsession with stout woolens the more I was down for it.

 

One thing I found entertaining in the books is the number of the times the ladies modify their clothes while on the road as their circumstances or needs change. I doubt that will make it into the show because it's not really important, but it's a fun detail I've never noticed in another series.

If you mean "smoothing skirts", we have seen a few examples of that in the show. It's very subtle.

Well, I love the idea a father sewing a sweater for his son. 

 

I'm a son and Dad so that idea warmed my heart.

 

I'm very much a t-shirt and shorts guy, I really hate anything with long sleeves, I'd rather be cold ?

I loved the costuming a surprising amount.  While very different from what I had pictured it was all very unique compared to other shows.  Most outfits tend to be very practical especially for travel.  In the end I really appreciated they it was your standard "medieval" attire.  This is a semi recovered post apocalyptic world, it shouldn't look like our past.

Wow. What a terrific video. I know very little about costuming, but I feel like I learned a ton just from watching this one episode. Bernadette is a fantastic teacher, even if that isn't her main priority.

 

I would love to see similar videos on all the costume pieces (or maybe her favorites). Solid content.

I loved the costuming. The more I think about the costumes in the books, I think has impractical they are and some would look a little too clown like, it sounds good in description, but put it in screen and it doesn’t work. 
love the travelling AES Sedai outfits, would love that myself ?

Is there any part of the series you like?  Or do the winds seem to blow from the wrong direction and the water in the rivers reflect incorrectly?

Well, personally I thought her dress looked ugly and silly, and reminded me of the Kryptonian Council in Superman: The Animated Series (not a complimentary reminder) ?..
