Frances Goldsmith had been involved in the leadership committee for Boulder's Free Zone ever since her ragged group of pilgrims arrived from Hemingford Home alongside Mother Abigail herself.  She had seen many things in the past several months - many horrible things - but she had never seen the kind of dark suspicion that simmered in the amphitheater tonight.

 

There were rumors of spies from Las Vegas, from the Dark Man himself.  In the aftermath of the superflu, many of those who made their way to the Free Zone had experienced the terrifying dreams of Randall Flagg and his particular brand of evil. Fran herself had seen Flagg in her nightmares, and heard his threats against her unborn child.  

 

How these people could imagine that Frannie would join his side, would plot against her lover and her friends, baffled her.  She tried to catch Glen Bateman's eye across the amphitheater, to see if he had some trick of crowd psychology up his sleeve to turn the tide here, but even he turned away, unsure.

 

Stu fought for her, of course, but his voice was drowned out in the swell of the crowd, and before long, she was torn from his side and carried away.
