Because Lan was there specifically to keep him from hurting himself. (Why else would Lan be there instead of guarding Moiraine?) We're lead to believe that Stepin went to Nynaeve for the sleeping aid because he intended to overdose on it, but that was both foreshadowing and misdirection--he really wanted it as a means to escape from his watchers.
Yep, Lan was the Epstein guard. Wonder if he got paid off to let Stepin "suicide".

I'd ask you this: what key book moment have we missed? I can think of only two so far: Perrin did not kill a Whitecloak (at least he hasn't yet), and Rand did not fall into the palace Garden. Otherwise, the main beats of EotW are all present in the tv show.
(at least he hasnt yet)...
That ship has sailed. If he killed a WC now, who would blame him? At this point Perrin and the WCs are enemies as far as I am concerned and feeling guilty for killing a WC after they tortured him is not something for him to feel guilty about.

Geralt is the lead and gets most of the screentime.
Which even drives the point further home. Geralt is a lead and gets more screentime. If they can create a show around it, surely a secondary character would have been just fine.

For those who keep saying things like "non book readers would take a disliking to Lan"
It works just fine for Geralt. People love Geralt and the tv series. So, the "Lan needed to be humanized" crowd is stating opinions. Lan was loved in the books for how he was, why would he not be loved? There are thousands of named characters in the books, make all the incompetent, butt of jokes out of all those characters and give us the Lan who was one of the best in fantasy.

just to clarify, im happy with the humanising of Lan, i want him to get a few runs on the board, but i dont have a hankering for the robotrolloccruncher 2000
im justifying his 'misses', some of the comments are strange to me, first and foremost being the implication he shouldnt be getting hit by debri in a battle.....
It is the total, not just one thing it is the total of all things. Morainne has been killed twice in a month under Lan's watch. Lan has been killed once. He has screwed up in basically every episode. But hey, you want a guy who is like a girl but like a guy so the change is good. I want the Lan from the books so the change is bad. To each their own.

book Lan> Show Lan, that i concede.
im trying to justify the differences in the character, he's more accessable, and because its an 8 show series his character arc is pushed on a little, if we accept that (i have, not saying others have to) then we can still see the same Lan that we see in the books, we do need to make offscreen assumptions, but thats fine with me
apart from Nyn, who has he let his guard down to of his new found friends though?
Thing is, why justify it? It is just wrong to have happened.
Lan is one of the best characters in all of fantasy. It is just stupid to change him. Why fix what isnt broken? Not only not broken but pretty incredible as is.
Lan should be played/written almost like Geralt in the Witcher. Rarely talking, grunts, absolutely competent and a bad ass. It works pretty damned well in the Witcher, why wouldnt it work pretty damned well in WoT?

Even if he had killed Valda or any other whitecloaks as he escaped, I dont see how he could have the same guilt. They were literally torturing him. Because he had his "confession" about his wife, I unfortunately feel like that is going to be the story. Somehow he wants the whitecloaks to punish him or relieve him from his guilt. If that becomes the case, why he would look to the whitecloaks for his redemption is going to be hard to swallow.

Unless Lan left a dying Morainne laying alone to go back to brush their horse tracks from fleeing SL, then it isnt unbelievable at all that she was able to track them to where they were.
-
I thought he was going to say "but Jain isnt dead"
-
Considering they were being chased by a fist of trollocs, tracking them to shadar logoth would be easy for anyone. From there, finding Lan might be difficult, but within Nynaeve's skill set. Sneaking up to him with a dagger is where it leaves the plane of reality. She wouldnt be able to sneak up on Lan in his sleep, much less wide awake.

Mat actor is truly outstanding. The way he is playing the dagger tainted Mat compared to the pre tainted Mat is really good.

Did everyone miss the different colored weaves when Egwene channeled fire?
Lan was the lead mourner. He expressed everyone's grief.
Which shows how terribly bad they are portraying Lan. That is like having Ishmael running a daycare.
They keep making comments about Moiranne not being around the tower at all and always on the move.. exactly when did Lan and Stepin become BFFs?

Another massive failure for Lan.
"Lan, you are on suicide watch, think you can handle it"
"Oh yes, I can handle this, this will be easy"
"Don't fall for the old herbs in your wine trick"
"Absolutely not, I will be front and center"
"oh.. damn... the old herbs in my wine trick"
I just want to see Lan die a horrible death.

There were lots of little things they could have done with Lan, the warders, and Tam that would have made them seem more capable and competent. In some scenes they almost seemed to undercut the men's abilities to accentuate a female. Not sure if that was intentional or just accidental in writing. I see that as a big problem as we move more into characters arcs.
It is hard not for me to feel that they have lessened Lan in favor of Nynaeve and it does bother me.
Nynaeve could have snuck up within hearing distance (like in the books) then moved out of hiding to "suprise" Lan from a distance and still have the right effect without making Lan seem incompetent.
Then to have to "kill" Lan in order for Nynaeve to badassery heal him, once again lessened Lan for the sake of Nynaeve.
My daughter who is not a book reader and somewhat casual watcher was here watching episode 4 the other day and asked me... "why do they keep letting that guy lead, he always messes up"...
That should never, ever, ever be uttered when in reference to Lan, but here we are.
As of now, Lan is my biggest grievance with the tv show. It will be hard for me to buy into him being the badass we know him to be from the books at this point.
Perrin killing his wife is my second biggest grievance.

Parrot Analytics reports that The Wheel of Time is doing big, big numbers in terms of audience demand. Ahead of launch, they noted that it was trending higher than Netflix’s smash-hit The Witcher. After launch, The Wheel of Time even surged ahead of Disney Plus’s Hawkeye briefly at launch in terms of audience demand.

Any way you look at it, the Logain reaction was poorly done. Instead of clarifying anything it just caused more confusion.
-
The prologue is what kept me hooked when I turned the page and found myself reading a LoTR book. Knowing what was to come allowed me to stay interested.
I am still convinced we will see the prologue, but it will be later as maybe a dream when Rand first starts having memories.
Logain should be stronger than Nynaeve. When she healed him he was toying with her, flexing but not attacking her shield. He knew that if he broke her shield he would be screwed.

Expectations for Combat in the series
in Wheel of Time TV Show

I liked the fights in Witcher. I like the battles in The Last Kingdom as well as the individual fights. I liked the fight between Achilles and Hector in Troy.
