Vimes was proceeding along Sweetheart Lane when he heard the mob. Metaphorically his hackles raised and he jogged along.

 

Dibbler was almost universally liked, it was the only way you could explain people buying a second, and on occasion a third, sausage inna bun from him. Admittedly, that incident with the elephants hadn't gone well. And the dragon detecting advice had been met with a little resistance, and the tonic had left a few people with a couple of extra toes instead of the luscious crop of new hair that he'd promised, but in general with the aid of his mustard he could sell pretty much anything. So the mob came as a surprise. He initially started to reason with it, but realised quickly that was futile, and instead picked up the handles of his wheel arrow and started to run.

 

If he'd dropped the wheel barrow he might have made it.

 

Vimes arrived just in time to see the body fall. He looked at the mob and backed slowly away full of frustration that this was happening to his city

 

Death was also present in the street. He was feeling conflicted, Death came to everyone¹, but this man had been overheard saying that he didn't dislike the thought of Death. On his quest to become more of a people person, under request from the recently deceased that his skeletal demeanour came as such a shock, that they wouldn't be surprised if they died all over again², so he'd started by trying to tell jokes. That hadn't hone down well either, 'Death was no laughing matter' after all. But here was a man who understood. Through a strange fug that appeared, probably to add atmosphere to the occasion, he could see the shape of an auditor materialise and sighed as he swung the scythe.

The Assassins had set a one million dollar price on Vetinari's head, no refunds and payment I'm advance. The result was a few wealthy and well connected people were suddenly a lot poorer and several assassins suddenly found themselves a foot shorter, or in extreme cases thrown in the scorpion pits with the mimes. As such it was possible that Vetinari had grown complacent. He was certainly surprised when he found himself standing next to his body. He reflected on his life and decided that he didn't much like surprises after all.

 

Vimes made it to the palace early the next morning with a lengthy report, he'd made sure to wear his oldest and most worn boots, they were comfy and he'd be standing for a while. He stopped dead when he saw the hole in Vetinaris chest, pure dread filling his heart...
