Physics Fact of the Day

 

You have probably heard that physicists know the universe is both expanding and also accelerating outward.  But how do they know this?  How can you measure the distances stars are away from each other?  Well, there are multiple ways but one method is to measure a type of star called a Cepheid. 

 

Cepheids are the universe's clocks.  They "pulse" like a strobe light at a rave.  So think of a cepheid like an incredibly accurate clock that tells time by blinking on and off.  It is easy to measure time from them.  Once you have this "universal clock" you can then measure how fast and how far the clocks are moving by the doppler effect. 

 

The doppler effect describes how things appear different when they are coming toward us compared to when they are moving away from us.  If you have ever heard a train or a car coming toward you and then heard it going away it sounds different.  That is because of the doppler effect.  So, apply this affect to these super accurate clocks and suddenly you get a good idea of how they are moving, how they are accelerating, and where they came from.

 

Incredibly, the are all moving away from the same point!  That point is where the "Big Bang" took place.  And, if you measure how far they are away from it, they give you the answer for how old the universe is!

3. So you can hear posts on dm? They speak to you? It doesn't read as jumpy is what you meant, and that's just silly cause if you can't see someone's expression or hear their voice you wouldn't know if it was jumpy or not. Can be perceived as one or the other.

Not much to it. I think your getting defensive when the attention you gained suddenly started getting you votes quickly. Your "go ahead and lynch me" seems like scummy taunting, then wifom'ing yourself (if I was scum, would I), then third point over-emphasized. This is a game based on newtons principle, that every action gets an equal and opposite reaction. It's what you find in the after math of the reaction as to where your best evidence lies.

I call 3-4 votes a train cause were at/almost at halfway to a lynch. Easy for people to sheep on from that point. The 4 votes ive seen on Jack though look like crap. Little legitimate reasoning for any of them, though one I think is a joke vote. The rest seem to have just pilled on.
