he still existed yes, but how was he able to get back to the unaltered timeline when doc and marty couldn't?

I don't know..been awhile since I've seen these movies..doesn't this go with the wormhole timeline theory of Stephen Hawkin? The idea that we can move back and forth on the timeline by taking shortcuts so to speak..a bending of time?

Old Biff starts at the Red X and travels to the Blue X. He changes time so that the split into the green X is the default timeline. He then travels into the future, but instead of going to the green X like he should have, he ends up at the Red X.

 

Doc and Marty go back in time, and they go from the Red X to the 1985 in the opposite timeline.

 

It just doesn't make sense!

You are using Back to the Future as your basis for time manipulation theories? So biff goes back into the past and returns to an unaltered future right? and then the other two go back in the past from the unaltered future and end up in the altered past? I've only seen the first back to the future once.

yup. And they can't stop biff in the unaltered future because the are in the altered present.
