Old vs. New Mafia Rules and Playstyle

Lily brought up in a game how she doesn't like a lot of the new ways people play and the new rules. This has been debated a little in the Greviences thread, but I thought it would be good to have one dedicated to Old vs. New.

I, however, can't speak for the old playstyles since I only started playing mafia about 1 1/2 years ago. So I suppose I'm part of the newer crowd. I'd love to hear some debate and explanation of the older ways and why they are superior. Maybe we can reincorperate some of that magic and merge it with what the new-agers have been used to to find ultimate Mafia playing goodness.

I'd say the Lily, Verbal, generations. All I know is that I keep hearing a lot of "back in the day" talk and I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

hmmm we'll first we have to figure out what we consider old and new.

*puts on her WoT geek hat*

AoL's = Kivam Gambit Era

Trolloc Wars = Rey's Ceasar Mafia

Arthur Hawking & 100 Campanions = Transfer to DM8.0

Dragon Reborn is Born = DPR's last game or Kivams Bastared Police Academy or Kivams Game of Thrones Mafia

Removing the Taint from Saidin = present day

using this scale, i can take you lot back to the Trolloc Wars

but .... i honeslty play about the same as i always have since taking off the training wheels. i've always played with WoT's (and it took alot of effort before Multi-quote btw) but i've cut back in how much i quote now.

the only difference in my perosnal play style is i'm more agressive.

i think the only real aggrevation that i cant pin point in games today versus pre-Dm 8.0 is how people treat Day 1 and the amount of game spam. in DM7.0 you have a bit of game spam, but Day 1 rush wagons we'rent as prevalent. oh, and there used to not be so many emo meltdowns as i recall, though there were a far share of them at times.

but inactivity has always been an issue.

So.... what are ya' all's opinions of old vs. new? What of the new do you like, what of the old do you prefer?

I don't know the difference. Maybe old was more polite?

Not from what I've heard. I mean look at Mynd! That guy knows how to rock a boat. Red too.

I might be a bad example since I really don't enjoy playing here anymore.

Back then there were newbie games, which were nice but I can see the reason for getting rid of them.

There was spam in the games, but also seriousness. The past few games I played here dragged on forever and people were all trying to be too serious.

No, not everyone was polite back then. There was just no rule 14.

The thing that bugs me the most is the newish rule about not being allowed to talk to your partners off the QTs. Some of my best plots have been hatched on IM and then I summarized them on the QT, to keep everyone in the loop. That's really the only thing that comes to mind, but I did just wake up. I'm sure I'll be back.

In fairness, though, I am the one who started the rule about if the mod has to random lynch, you get no coroner report. I'm sure that bugs some people, too. New rules evolve. I just have to be picky which games I play in to avoid what I don't like, I guess.

I learned about that one the hard way when modding and have debated on whether restricting to the QT in the future because of it. I think it will depend on my games, but I think for basic and typical advanced games I'll start allowing any method of behind the scenes chatter for teams

Everything used to be done via pm and IM and the mods really weren't involved, except for receiving night actions.

see, i came in when QT's were being used but mods we're still tryign to figure out what to do about no majoritys being reached for lynches.

personally Lily i like the "no corner" rule when a game doesn't reach the majority. imo, thats better than lynching a random person, but the down side is it offsets balance in favor of the scum team.

edit - burn it all, hit enter before i was done.

re- talkign outside of QT, i'm against it. if a mod specifys no outside communication other than whats provided then its specified for a good reason. there might be elements in play (ie: traitors, ect) that woudl be ruined if communication outside the QT is done. if a mod wants to allow it, then by all means, but imo if the rule is "no communication other than whats been provided" that includes team mates talking on IM and PM. the QT is designed to allow the team to talk, using more than one method can confuse things imo. heck with the new PM system, it honestly makes the need for QT's obsolete.

No I mean what exactly is something that is old and what is new?

What is an old rule and what is it's new counterpart?

I guess the QT Conversations is a good example. Now we set a standard only communicate in QT even if it isn't necessary.
