DRAGONMOUNT

A WHEEL OF TIME COMMUNITY

Rolling the dice

Hello everyone, I started the WOT about a month ago and am currently starting Shadow Rising and continue to be happily engrossed in this wonderful series. I'm still amazed that this went on for fourteen books. It's a shame that R.J. didn't live to see the end of it but what we have is a treasure.

Having said that I have to admit that there are a couple of minor annoyances with Mr. Jordans writing style. I know, I know, I shouldn't nitpick especially in my very first introduction to this community but I should explain that my primary motivation for joining this community is to share the joy of this wonderful and exciting series that so clearly stands out from the droning masses of boring, unimaginative fantasy books.

The other, less important motivator was to find out if these particular things have bothered anyone else. The main one is his constant use of the term "scrubbing" where "wiping" or "rubbing" seem to make more literary sense. People are constantly scrubbing their eyes, nose, head, hands and mouth. The other is the term "knuckling" as in knuckling his forehead or knuckling her back. This one is not as bad and I did look up the origins of the phrase and it seems to be fairly sound - if not commonly used, even in the distant past. Finally the one that just seems weird which is the use of the word mustaches instead of the common use mustache. As in he blew out his mustaches.

Again I know this is a silly and trivial thing to be talking about but it has become a distraction from what is otherwise the most enjoyable book series I've read since I was a kid.

Anyway, it's very nice to be here and I hope to have great conversations with many of you. This is a huge world to talk about and it should be interesting.

Wait till you've gone through 13 books of braid-tugging, skirt-smoothing and pointed sniffing - knuckling and moustaches will seem like a fond dream

I think scrubbing is a more vigorous action than wiping, which is why it was employed (I've not noticed its use myself, but that is what springs to mind). For instance, just wiping your eyes does not imply as much agitation or angst as scrubbing them does.

Knuckling is a commonly used word, but maybe more in English than American societies?

Can't help you with the moustaches, though that might refer to those huge things that look like two separate animal tails that have been stuck on someone's face. We're used to more restrained moustaches in our time.

Anyhoo, welcome do DM!

 Thanks!

Now that you mention it I was beginning to notice all that braid tugging action going on. I guess we all notice different things. I think you're right about the mustaches thing - at least that's what went through my mind when I read it a few times. I also get your point about the degrees of agitation that you can show in which rubbing just doesn't get it across. That explanation may very well save my sanity - at least till I get to the pointed sniffing parts!

Aaarrkkk I have failed! Sanity is soooo boring, trust me

By the way, you write beautifully - ever thought of giving Role Playing a try? (For all I know you've been doing it for the past 20 years and I'm trying to get my grandmother [metaphorically speaking] to suck eggs here ... lol.)

Hello everyone,

HEY! :D

Agreed!

*laughs* I actually haven't really noticed it but it's pretty cool that you did. A little out there but there are quite a few people on this forum that feel as strongly about all sorts of details in WoT. I'd say that your safest bet in finding people that might empathize with this is on the Discussion board. However, be careful of spoilers!!!

Also, if you feel like checking out other aspects of Dragonmount, I strongly suggest checking out the various Social Groups (for socializing :D) and the various Role Play Groups (I'll let you guess what's that for... lol).

Anyway, it's very nice to be here and I hope to have great conversations with many of you. This is a huge world to talk about and it should be interesting.

Sure is. It's really nice to meet you and if you have any questions or doubts, feel free to shoot me a private message. I'm always happy to help ;)

Welcome to Dragonmount.com, Corwinsr

We have many different forums and sub-forums where you can discuss practically anything that you want; including discussions that are not WOT based, but on just about anything else in this world that you might want to discuss. I encourage you to browse the forums, read and also participate in the countless discussions that are ongoing.

Also, some of the places where WOT fans can have the most fun are in the various Social Groups here, based upon different groups written by Robert Jordan in the Wheel of Time. These Social Groups include, but are not limited by; the Aiel, The White Tower, The Black Tower, the Ogier, and Shayol Ghul.

If you are interested, post what you like best in The Wheel of Time series, and then you can be given suggestions as to which ones of the Social Groups on Dragonmount that you might like. Dragonmount also has roleplay forums for those whom want to immerse themselves in character into the most fascinating fantasy world ever created, the world of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

You have found what I believe is the very best fan forum and message board for a fictional series of books. Also, I believe without a shred of an iota of doubt in my mind that The Wheel of Time series is the VERY BEST series of fictional novels that has ever been written. Stick around here long enough, and I can promise you that not only will you meet cool and interesting people online, but also that you will become friends with some whom you regularly interact.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me at any time.

Corwin! Please tell me you got your name from the Chronicles of Amber, not as many fans of that series around anymore! I also noticed your location said "The Blight - Texas", somewhere around Del Rio perhaps? Further west? Or is "The Blight" a red herring, and you're in a greener part of Tejas? I hail from San Antonio myself. I also noticed you picked up on the PB quote quick, you'll fit in nice here

This site is literally stuffed with crazy awesome people that will help make you feel welcome, whether on the discussion forums (I lurk there quite a bit, if you like breaking stuff down a bunch you'd probably like those forums) or the social groups (I recently started getting more into them, having a lot of fun so far) or the role playing side (I stick with xbox and oblivion for that). There's also tons of other stuff to browse around and check out, and great weekly content that fills you in on book stuff, conventions celebrating the Wheel of Time, and other great stuff.

Whatever you do, don't get intimidated, I spent a long time "lurking" on this site as they call it, just reading other posts and never bothering to create an account so I could post. Be outspoken, get to know people, and you'll have a blast!

Quite right! Nice to know there are still fans of that series around. I almost used a silver rose for my avatar but I wanted to see if anyone would ask. Achievement unlocked sir - well done

Oops, I shouldn't have put West side as that's misleading. I referenced The Blight due to the umpteenth day of 100+ temps but as it turns out we're neighbors! I'm also in S.A. over in Leon Valley off Evers Rd. So what part of town do you hail from (don't worry, I'm a harmless student that wouldn't stalk a fly)... harm, harm a fly... that's what I meant, yeah.

ROFL that last bit had me goin pretty good. I actually moved away sadly, now I live in South Carolina, but my heart will always be in San Antone. I think I know where you're at though, isn't that close to 410? If it is then you live right by a friend of mine. I lived in northwest side of town when I did live there, my Dad lives right down the street from UTSA. You should get two roses in your avatar! Silver one for Corwin (as much as I love the Wheel of Time, no character compares to bad assedness of that guy) and a yellow one for Texas!

It's too bad you're not still in town but at least you're not roasting every day either!

That's correct, I'm about a mile outside 410 and UTSA is about ten minutes away so we really would have been neighbors.

I love that idea! Maybe I can incorporate them into a WoT symbol somehow and bring it all together! I haven't fired up Photoshop in a while but you've got my creative juices flowing now.

To the secret lab - pull the lever!

Who knows, maybe we still can be one day, my fiance came to visit my family in Texas for the first time this past summer, and she fell in love with the place. Loved the people, the weather (it's more humid in south carolina, and has been in the 100's most of the summer here too), the food, my family, every bit of it, as did Darla, her 3 year old! She's still very attached to her family, so it'll take me a little more nudging before we're seriously discussing it, but you can keep your fingers crossed for me! Incidentally, I almost feel like you can't call yourself a Texan if you don't like SRV, who I was just listening to. Is that statement true or false?

You mean this lever here?

tries to pull lever down, grunts in futility

Erm, one sec just havin a bit of trouble here

Yanks on it harder, and after one more tug the lever comes off in Despothera's hand, and Corwin goes shooting down the tube like a cannister sent back to a drive through bank teller who won't give you a pen

Oh gawd lookit that now you got me RPing!

Entirely true... but I wouldn't recommend listening to Texas Flood while driving - It's a sweet song but it will put you into a happy kind of dazed coma at five and half minutes. I think I have every one of his songs in a file here somewhere. A few years ago I spent a weekend ripping every CD I had into my desktop.

 That's awesome! I was actually regressing and quoting The Emperor's New Groove but I love your take on it - except for the part about me shooting down a tube! Unless it's at Seaworld that is.

All jokes aside though, look forward to gettin to know you better and having some of these "intelligent conversations" you speak of.

I like these two... How many guys quote The Princess Bride and Emperor's New Groove. Let me know if either of you are ever in Ohio ;P

Glad you already think we're awesome Despo, I think most are scared off by now :P

Anyways, WELCOME CORWINSR!!!!

So do we have to call him by his full name since his namesake is some awesome non-wot character?

*sniffs* I suppose "Lord" is acceptable.

I may take you up on that offer if I ever find myself up North, you sound lovely. Besides, I'm sure it's much cooler up there than down here. I understand the ground shakes occasionally though? lol.

Friendship? Elgee I fear you are mistaking "Friends" for "Captive" again.

Well that's not an alarming statement at all.

*I loved your grand entrance btw, but I think you're just out to sow discord for your own insidious pleasure.
