If Moridin dies...

Apologies if this has been discussed in detail elsewhere. I've read about the body swap theory, but I'm wondering about what would happen if Moridin were just killed outright--what would happen to Rand, if anything? Moridin seems concerned with keeping Rand alive...perhaps he's concerned that if Rand were to be killed, he might also die?

I'm wondering if this could tie in with the "to live you must die" prophecy? To live, he has to kill Moridin, but killing Moridin would result in him dying -- sort of a catch 22 situation? Perhaps then Alivia helping Rand die could be interpreted as Alivia helping to kill Moridin (i.e., in a battle)?

I have no idea what would happen if Moridin is simply killed. Moridin seems not to know himself. He is unsure about the nature of the link which comes through in his conversation with Rand in tGS. But I don't think it will happen that way. Min saw a viewing of Rand and another man merging with one of them dying as the result and the other not. I'm sure that viewing refers to Moridin so whichever of them dies first it won't be a separate death not involving the other. Also, I have a feeling that the one to die in that viewing will be Rand , not Moridin.

He doesn't want to experience a painful death? BTW he was prepared to have Rand killed, if absolutely necessary, before the Cleansing and after the Shadar Logoth balefire cross incident.

But also before the link manifested in Rand to degree that the fact that it was a link became recognisable. Presumably it was the same for Moridin.

I wonder if Rand losing his hand and the effects it had on Moridin is in any way a indicator of what would happen if he died?

We know that Moridin feels the loss of Rands hand, but, from all indications, he doesnt actually lose the ability to use his hand completely. (I am not sure on this. I dont have the books with me. It could be very possible we have no evidence that Moridin can use his hand. Someone might want to help out here)

In any case, if my statement is accurate, how would that correlate with one of them dying? It seems that while one can feel the pain of loss, it doesnt actually mean the loss itself. (Moridin doesnt lose his hand)

Of course, there are a few problems with that i suppose. Losing a hand cant really be compared to death, i dont think the outcome could be predicted on that basis.

2. The bond between them could have grown stronger since the hand incident, merging them further.

So yeah, no real conclusive points, i just thought it could be interesting/indicative examining the loss of Rand's hand as it is the only thing we have to look at in regards to the merging of Rand and Moridin.

Or he wants to die for good, in other words not reborn again.

You know, it's funny that Moridin, of all people, will order Rand not to be harmed for fear for his own life. After all, he doesn't really want to live, does he?

He doesn't want to die either : dying now means the Wheel turning for another seven ages (give or take a few), it means continuing this pointless battle. For this to stop he has to live and help the dark side until the DO breaks free.

Hey Luckers, any thoughts on what might happen to Rand (if anything) if Moridin gets killed?

We don't know. Moridin certainly seems worried about it though.

Mind, M's always been reluctant to get Rand killed, even before there was any link, or in the AoL, for that matter.

Leads one to believe that the GLoD reckons He has a serious use for the DR, or there's something in the Dark Prophesies that Elan has interpreted that way. Agree with you that after TGS, or maybe after the Cleansing, it's clear that Moridin's got "self-preservation" as a motive as well as more wideranging considerations since he confesses he's clueless about the effects of the link.

Incidentally this should bother Rand - 1) Moridin could always bump himself off or deliberately harm himself - he's not sane and if M does off himself, it interferes with Rand's plans.

Another thing that occurred to me.

Could Rand break the link by deliberately getting himself Stilled and Healed by Nyn (or another woman)? It might do the trick.
