DM Mafia Games

For games such as Mafia, Pictophone and whatever else you can think of.

I love the new simple name - it's direct and inviting, however there's a small, itsy-bitsy problem. The topic description is now a bit jarring.

Made a command decision. If Barm doesn't like it, he can make a change.

Thats up to Verbal and Wes, seeing as they are the mods here.

I knew Verb and Wes were in favor, and figured you would be too - just wanted to be clear I wasn't stepping on your toes

I read the first pages but didn´t have the time to read all. Just think this is a good thing to talk about. I´m currently in my third Mafia Game and I love to play. First I played in Aemons Firefly game. (I was a vanilla.) I had a coach of my own, Aust, who I could talk to in a private qt. That was just great. He really took time answering all my newbie questions. Playing and learning at the same time. My second game was Fiddleton where I was mafia with Talya and Phelix. That was also great. I have learned much by playing with more experinced players.

I think Mods could be more clear when they present their games - "This is a game for active players!" I know stuff happens in life but games can be soooo boring when noone participates. The onces that accually participate a lot just risk being lynched. I don´t know why people just lurk around so much. It´s not the worlds end if you die - it´s just a game! Try to have fun while playing.

Well, looking forward to learn more while playing. Maybe one day I actually know how to play...

Yeah, that's an unfortunate side effect of an internet forum - you simply can't control people that say they'll be active, but end up not being so.

It has resulted in a number of players being noted as unreliable. Some mods might be hesitant to include them in a game, and will privately check with them to get express consent that they'll be active enough. Once I get around to modding again, I will definitely be using this approach.

I'm not sure what you mean by mods being more clear: aren't all games intended for active players? That should be understood. And mods usually have a rule about players being required to post enough.

A problem I've seen, lately, is mods not following through on those rules. Most games I play, a mod will let an inactive player go for several day phases before finally get around to replaceing or modkilling that player. I admit I used to do this, in the first couple of games I modded, because I felt bad about that. But really, the player knows the rules when they sign up, and if they fail to follow them, they shouldn't get their feelings hurt when they're replaced or modkilled. So now I'm super strict about that.

In general, though, I feel like we've actually had an upturn in activity in our games here. It's still not great, but in general, not as many games are being run at once anymore, I think, which helps.

Inactivity is always present in mafia. It is difficult to stop. When I created my mafia site, I made it my focus to have active mafia games. We enforce this using rep points on my site but personally I think it is the style of game that can influence it. Other then that it really is up to the staff and the hosts of the game to enforce this stuff. Sure you need to be understanding that people have lives outside the internet but if someone playing your game tells you nothing then you need to be ready to make that decision and have back-ups

^ This. I agree 100% and I think it's necessary. It might be the only way a mod can "teach" a player to be more active if they'd like to play mafia. I'd rather have a small but active core than a ton of players with many being inactive.

The reason I don't modkill (I never have except for PR breaking) is not to be fair to the player, but to their team. If you modkill two townies, for example, the whole town suffers when the mafia has an easier win. In my experience, mafia members are usually pretty active. I'll replace where I can, but I don't modkill, or at least, haven't yet.
