What does Rand do afterwards?

Okay, I'm making assumptions here, but let's say the Light wins TG, everything ends happily ever after, and Rand lives to see another day? What will he do with his life? First, he needs to sleep for about two months... but he always talks about how the nobles don't need to like him, they just need to listen to him until TG. I would be fascinated if he decided to go back to the Two Rivers and became a sheep herder again - he would be able to say "I had my duty as Dragon Reborn, and I carried it out. I'm sick of the lords plotting against me, I just want a simple life." Of course, he could live with Elayne, but he'll still have an ego and I'm not sure he'll be able to handle being useless in such a setting. I think ideally, he'd build a house somewhere and just live there with Min, Elayne, and Aviendha for the rest of his life, but Elayne and Aviendha have duties and I'm not sure they'd want to. So what do you think he would do?

Well by then he will be in a new body so he can go off with Min and live secretly for the rest of his days in the middle of nowhere. He might return to Two Rivers but I doubt it; not only do too many people know he is from there, Two Rivers is gradually growing and will be far different from the place he remembers. It'll be some farm far from everything.

Elayne wouldn't allow him to live a normal life. Nor would the rest of the world. He'd have glory-seekers attempting to assassinate him every day. I don't think he'd cease to be the Caracarn just because he won Tarmon Gaidon either, but if he could avoid everybody I can see him settling down on a farm someplace in the middle of nowhere, the way Beren and Luthien did after returning to Middle Earth.

I honestly dont think the body swap thing will happen.(and pray that it doesnt)

but if it does i will just pretend it didnt happen...kinda like what i did with all of the SoT books after book 1.

Rands body is far too broken for it not to happen.

Since it seems he's going blind, he might have to go into the waste on his own, or the Aiel will reject his kids. Wait, no, what?

You know, that new (at least, it's new to me) theory where Nynaeve yanks him out of tel'aran'rhiod after he dies also takes care of that.

I'd laugh if they did that, and Rand's Hero personality is nothing like his real one.

Elayne: Rand, oh thank the Light your alive again. I love you.

Rand: Umm... yeah, about that...

Elayne: What?

Rand: Well, like, when I met you I was a provincial farmboy...

Elayne: What are you saying?

Rand: It's just that I remember a whole lot more now. And, well, options were relatively low on the ground before, and...

Elayne: Rand, just spit it out.

Rand: You're a spoiled child and I want nothing to do with you. Also I'm with Berelain now.

Berelain: Manslut. I love it.

If the pattern of playing off of the Arthurian Legends persists, I think that Rand may unite the world into a new empire and Rule as High King, just as Arthur did.

But the king Arthur figure already exists as Artur Paendrag Tanreall and we know for a fact Rand and him are not the same soul.  Also: different timeframe in the whole cycle of "fact, history, myth, legend" at this point.

I think that if he survives this (probably after being "dead" for three days as one of his more recent incarnations) he'll probably use the hands off aproach and leave the world he saved to plot, wage war and simmer as it always had.  The new body would make a low profile quite easy to obtain if he chose to go to a city or something.  And it would also be a good reason for him not to hang around with Elayne all too much.

Elayne: "Why are you avoiding me Rand?"

Rand: "People would get suspicious... yeah, that's it."

Of course, where he would live is another question... Black Hills, former Blight, Mountains of Mist, Tremalking (he kinda inadvertably depopulated the place), a stedding...

Hell, he might even become a tinker ;)

Edit: Here's a thought I had halfway through the fourth book or something.  Will the final epilogue show us the new incarnation of Rand's soul in the next Age?  Would be nice to get a glimpse of 3000 years post Rand.  I wonder what kind of age that would be.

I think if anyone was going to come a High King or whatnot afterwards it would be Perrin; he is the best suited to be a King of sorts personality wise no matter what he may believe. I can't see Rand wanting anything to do with politics or royalty or anything of the sort once TG is done. If anything he would want to enjoy life after what has happened and not get caught up in ruling.

Yeah, but it would be so much more ironic if Mat became king of the world!

No way! They couldn't give us a sneak peak and then close it off completely..

IMO I think Channeling will cease after TG and the Aes Sedai will depart in some orderly fashion and Rand will go with them

Nice subtle reference.

Anyway, he won't give up channeling because he'll have to be making a gateway every couple of days to skip back and forth between his women (because I can't see the 3 of them living together AND sharing him).

And a couple of times a year heading out to the Land of Madmen for some peace and quiet!

The blindness happened in TGS.

:)

I was being funny (or not, I guess you guys get to be the judges of that).

I think he won't simply because it's impossible. We've had that from several sources.

Perrin:  <sniff> Why is Faile jealous?
