ToM: Leaked Beta Copy

Not to sound like a goody-goody, but if I saw a copy of it online somewhere I'd prolly notify Tor.

Same here...

...after I read the thing.  I would still buy it at release, though.

Well if it keeps the dirtbags from stealing and spoiling WoT then I don't mind being low key, there is a phrase "Too many people in the pool."

I saw this thread earlier and was preparing to close it until I read it. It would not remain if it did have any links or info on actual leaked copy.

Well I gotta admit, I made the title of this thread a little vague just to get some response, but that was only about 10% of my intention  ;)

It's actually kind of a surprise this kind of thing doesn't come up more, with WoT being so popular now, it's huge internet fanbase and all.

Have you had to lock any threads in years passed that tried to advertise pirated copies?

Shard hasn't, because this is his first go round as a mod. But I've done it before. Usually they were hoaxes.

Part of the reason for the the lack of leaks with WoT books is that very few electronic copies of the manuscripts exist and Harriet has personally met and agreed to each person that sees one.  When Jordan was alive, he was very closed about his work. Even Harriet didn't see a manuscript until it was on it's 10th or 12th revision. And with his editor being his wife, it probably wasn't necessary to ever email her a copy. He could just hand her a print off, or if he wanted to save paper, a disk.  So there aren't many opportunities for leaks.

Like Kathan said, it seems really unlikely that there would be a leak. Team Jordan seems to be a fairly tight-knit group, and not the type that would let anybody have a copy that they though had any inclination to leak it.

If there were a leak, of course I'd read it, but I'd DEFININTLY buy a book, because reading books off the computer is not fun, for me at least, I think I'd struggle a little to read a full leaked WoT book because of that, although I'd try.

Clearly then Ms. Rowling and Meyer have untrustworthy people working for them.

Though with HBP the truck or Wearhouse was actually broken into and the book stolen. The problem is that both Twilight and Harry Potter were in national news and making a big fuss which naturally garnered the attentions of unscrupilous individuals.

You know, a somewhat similar situation to this scenario was addressed in TGS. What Would WOT Do?

I'd obviously have to read at least some of it, else there'd be no way of knowing it isn't just a hoax. Then I'd notify Brandon and Harriet because they'd be most likely to tell from the time and copy and so forth when the leak happened, and possibly from where. This should help convince them that I can best serve as a faithful caretaker of their secrets...as a beta-reader for AMoL. Sweet!

As I recall Meyer knew exactly who leaked Midnight Sun as well. Although, in large, I think Rowling handled the situation with much more grace than Meyer, offering to sign books for people who didn't reveal things. Meyer's little speal about how it violated her rights as a human being seemed a bit much to me..

As for the question, it did happen last year, though not until about a week after the release, so it wasn't much of an issue--I'd do what I did then. Lock it up and alert the powers that be. Would I read it? I like to think not. I'd have loved to have been a beta reader, but it seems somehow disrespectful to Team Jordan to read it without their permission, and I appreciate what they do too much. It'd be one hell of a struggle, though.

Oh, I certainly agree. Although I wouldn't want to waste their time either by raising a huge alarm over a 1.2 mb file with an appropriate title that turned out have nothing more than MADE YOU LOOK! copied and pasted a hundred thousand times. That kind of stuff doesn't warrant the kind of quick damage control a full-blown pre-release leak would. If an actual leaked beta copy of ToM showed up here, you could bet it's a hundred other places on the Internet.

To be honest, I was actually a bit scared when I saw the title of this page. I thought, "Oh, no, it's been leaked? What's this going to do to the project?" Imagine the spoilers! I'd be really mad. If I'm ever in a position where I can help prevent such damage to the series, just being able to preserve its integrity would be thanks enough. Should Team Jordan feel the need to express any gratitude, though, I suppose I could stomach being a beta-reader for AMoL. If they twisted my arm. ;)

Meyer's response was entirely appropriate, considering the quality of work she actually produced. I'm kind of hoping she keeps to her hissy-fit promise (where she's put Midnight Sun on hold till she can feel "alone" with the manuscript) and never finishes the thing. It would be doing the literary world a huge favor.

I would read it, and no doubt I would seed it for a long time.

Naturally I'd still buy the book upon release, though.

OMG I READ A LEAKED COPY!!!!!!! FAILE DIED PERRING GOES CRAZY AND BECOMES A WOLFMAN!!!!!!  end of story.

oh ya, someone fixes those stupid holes that Rand has in his side.

can i open my eyes yet?

have the mods taken away the bad man?

seriously i wouldnt read it. i once got a pirate copy of terminator 2 judgement day given me before uk release.

TOTALLY ruined it for me. i didnt have the excitement or the enjoyment you get from a finished product.

its just not worth it. we all only get one chance to read ToM for the first time. i wouldnt waste it.

I would not read it, it could very well detract from reading the final version.

On a somewhat related note though, I'm wondering if I'll have to avoid the site when it comes close to the release date.  I actually joined Dragonmount last year in mid-October.  And since I'm incredibly shallow when it comes to my WoT fix, I was unable to prevent myself from reading the spoilers that were posted, especially the week leading up to the release of TGS.  It was my own damn fault, of course.  But I don't want to ruin any surprises for ToM.  Aside from buying/reading the prologue for ToM, I'm hoping my will is a bit stronger this time around.

I'm going to avoid the site for two weeks before, and up until I'm finished the book. Which should only take a day or two, unless I take a sick day. In which case the first read will be done in less than a day.

Posted

I would read it, just like I read the photographs of Deathly Hallows. But I still bought that book at midnight and I would still buy the WoT book on release day.

I would like to think I wouldn't read it and do al the right stuff concerning it but I don't know.

I also fell into the spoiler trap last year also but nothing too serious. Going to be more vigilant this year, not going to be on the site for a day or two.

@StefanR: Me too. Bout 6-7 hours first read, maybe 10 for the second. Can't wait!

Colour me impressed. It will take me at least two days to read it and that will mean very little sleep. I'm back in college this year so no work to skip, fair delighted about that.

Aieeeeee! It's getting so close I'm having palpitations.

I would read it, and pass it on to the one friend I have who is also a fan if he wanted it.  I wouldn't bother telling Tor, just because no matter how hard you try you will never get the piss out of the swimming pool.

@Owayn: usually a page per min or so, but faster in hardback. I will only take food and toilet breaks til first read is done - I mean, I will literally make a big casserole the day before ,and clear the day for my favourite activity!

I'm going to be conciderably more strict this year than we were last year. It's part of the reason a WoT Admin was made--the need to focus on these issues. No promises, but I'll do everything within my power to protect against spoilers. And my power is not inconsiderable.

Mmmmm, casserole. Chicken? My favourite. I found last time I had to put the book down on occasions: Rand and the male adam; Rand and castle Greandhal; Verin's big reveal;and Mat at hinderstaff(?spelling?), disliked that chapter, seemed out of place for wheel of time. Would not of minded it in another book, nothing wrong with it in itself.

Hey Lucks. You don't mind if I call you Lucks, do you? Hey lucky baby. You don't mind if I call you that? It just some people would. It was my own fault to be honest, haven't strong enough will power but do appreciate any effort you put into it. All powerful WoT Admin.
