Rand v Demandred: Something's Up

Recommended Posts

It is  interesting that with Rand's near obsession with the Forsaken (Rhavin, Sammael, Graendal, Asmodean, Lanfear, Moridin.) He has virtually not any clue on Demandred.

Considering that Demandred is brought up most often ie; LTT mad ravings. And considering the history between the two, it is strange that Rand hasnt actively sought out Demandred.

I know that he has been occupied with other things and such, and I am not suggesting that he should drop everything to hunt for one Forsaken.

However, considering the length he went to kill Sammael and Graendal, its suprising that he hasnt even thought the same for Demandred.

Why Demandred you ask?

Well, while all of the Forsaken (apart from Lanfear, Moridin, and Asmodean) have basically wanted to kill him, Demandred is the worst. I mean, the whole reason he went over to the shadow was because he hated LTT. Now to me, if you know someone hates you with a deadly passion, and is one of the most powerful channelers in the world, you would be a bit more concerned about them than, say, Graendal, who is just a B***h and is only doing what the GL tells her.

One might say, theres been no evidence of Demandred anywhere that Rand has seen. yes, thats true, but i think that it would make the situation more alarming. Rand knows Demandred is out there somewhere. He has no sign whatsoever of where Demandred is, but that he hates him exclusively. For me, not having a clue as to where someone is makes them more dangerous.

So, is it just me? Or do you think it strange that considering everything, personal history, and the unknown whereabouts of Demandred and Rands actions against other Forsaken, Rand is making a big mistake in not at least trying to locate Demandred?

I think he's had so much on his plate (a table full of full plates is probably a better description of all the stuff Rand has going on) that he hasn't even had time to think about it.  Every forsaken he's dealt with he's had SOME sort of clue as to their location/plans/etc.  Demandred has done such a good job of staying in the shadows that he hasn't really gotten his attention yet.  I think if there was even one hint, one small indication of where/what Demandred was doing that he would have gone after him right away.  Demandred's biggest success so far has been staying hidden IMO.

edit:  I'm saying the same thing you do at the end, I just think just how successful D has been at hiding just makes it an "I'd love to deal with that...if I had ANY idea how" situation.

Well, he probably wants Demandred dead the most, however where would he even start? With Sammael he knew where he was pretty early on and it was just a matter of devoting time and resources to getting at him. Graendal he was able to figure it from what Asmodean and Kerb told him, so he was able to take care of her. Rand has never really gone out of his way to search for Forsaken - he has always at the very least had a general idea of where they were. With Demandred though, he probably doesn't have a clue, and doesn't really have the time to turn over every rock. He probably does have a fair belief that Demandred isn't close to him at all, although who knows; he allowed Osan`gar close.

If Graendal can't figure out where Demandred is, Rand has zero chance :P

Basically that, yeah.  Every Forsaken he's actively gone after has been from information he had.  I can't think of a scene in any of the books where he starts thinking about one of the Forsaken, and then actively does things to search for them.  Every time he's randomly (taveren) found out the information without actually actively seeking it.  Except Graendal I guess, but he knew in general where she was, a place to start.  With D he has no clue, at all.

I agree with both of your posts, it is impossible basically to find Demandred.

However, thatss beside the point. Demandred hates Rand (LTT) more than anyone else in the world. I mean, if i was Rand, he is the first person i would get rid of.

Also, I agree that he had a lot on his plate, however, i find it strange that he hasnt even THOUGHT of Demandred and finding him.

I mean, fair enough if he cant do anything, but surely he would be THINKING of Demandred. But the only time he thinks of Demandred is vaguely, LTT mostly saying, we should kill Demandred, sammael, etc...

Or am I wrong?

I think he has thought about it.  I'm pretty sure its in one of the books; he's been thinking about the forsaken in general and actually had the thought (paraphrasing) "Where IS Demandred?  I wish I had a clue".  I might be completely making that up though, even after reading the series like 5 times there are things I will realize for the first time (or forget completely then re-realize for the first time...again).

not sure on that, but even still, thats not really thinking about him.

look at it this way: Demandred is possibly the most dangerous man to Rand (he is obsessed with killing him), he has no idea where he is and could pop up at any time. Now to me, that would warrent more than a "Oh, I wish I knew, OH well, Ill forget about it for half of the series"

Something doesnt fit.

Probably for the same reason he's not out hunting Moridin in earnest.  Take out the weak, Moridin and Demandred are as likely to try and kill one another just for the right to defeat Rand.  Moridin seems uncomfortable confronting Demandred, in TGS he backs down from trying to defend any of his own claim on Rand and passes it off on the will of the DO.

I am not sure Rand has ever thought of it like that.

As for the reason he isnt hunting Moridin, its because he only found out he was a Darkfriend (Ishmael) until tGS, beforehand he only knew him as the guy who saved his life.

Ok first he said to him, you're lucky I'm not killing you just yet.  Then he talks about Sammael and very specific character traits he has, to help Rand figure out how to kill him.  Also knows balefire, tells him he's essentially using Rand in his plans while he's alive.  He did not walk around with a neon I AM ISHAMAEL sign but pretty close.

demandred hasnt been hunted down yet because he is flyin under the radar, and forsaken that shows up on that radar gets hit with balefire missiles (or some other destuctive force, for this experiment lets call it RAND)

besides rand doesnt really have much time to search the world in an effort to find him, especailly since all he would be looking for is something odd in politics or something liek that in a world that is going insane with bubbles of evil and other strange occurances, so rands best option is to work on the problems he already has in front of him adn wait for demandred to show up or come find him

Nah, I think there could be something in it.

Perhaps Rand is delighted he hasn't had to deal with Demandred yet, what with the sickness on seizing saidin.

Mind you, Rand seems to let a lot slide, just getting on with the day to day - Fain, Borderlanders, Taim... All fairly serious threats, in their way. Is he just not very good at multi-tasking?!

Rand is probably thinking that Demandred could show up at any time. He doesn't have a single clue as to Demandred's whereabouts and he has a lot he has to get done. So he carries his mountain and hopes if Demandred shows up he will be able to deal with it as it happens. In the meantime he'll keep those he cares about at a safe distance. We see that with him pushing Elayne, Min and Aviendha away.

I don't think he's ever forgotten about the man that's hellbent on killing him, but he has so much to do that he can't afford to worry about him and can't afford to be seen worrying. There was a saying Louis L'Amour liked to use, and I know Robert Jordan read the author's books, "It's easier to be brave when bravery is expected of you." It sort of fits here. Rand has a lot of people watching him and that dictates his actions. He can't play the coward here, even if deep down he would just like to run away. Duty is heavier than a mountain.

All fair enough, but we havent seen Rand actually think any of this. Demandred has been basically non-existant in his thoughts apart from one or two vague comments from LTT.

Thats the only point im making, its strange that Demandred being such a big enemy to him personally, that he hasnt at least had a little think about him.

(ie, You say he is probably thinking these things, but the fact is, we have had a tonne of Rand PoV, and he hasnt been thinking of him)

Everyone is right in saying he probably doesnt have time, its just strange that it seems he is completely silent on the matter.

Perhaps he just forgot about Demandred alltogether?

I don't think he has, I just think he's not differentiating Demandred from the rest of the forsaken. When he thinks of a specific one it's usually after he gets knowledge on their actions or whereabouts. They all represent a very great threat to him. Demandred is making it a personal struggle but to Rand he is just another forsaken out of a bunch that wants him dead.

Yeah, thats exactly what I think aswell.

On that note, I find it strange though. I mean, if someone hated you more than anyone else in the world, and was one of the most powerful people in the world, wouldnt you give that special attention.

See Im not debating what Rand HAS done, its obvious, he doesnt think of Demandred at all, he thinks of him as you say he does. Thats all well and good, thats NOT what im posting.

Im saying, its strange that this is how he DOES think, considering Demandred's personality (which Rand knows from LTT)

I just thought it strange he didnt give it more attention.

Because at the end of the day, Rand and Lews Therin still had seperate personalities, seperate memories. Regardless of what happened in TGS, prior to that Rand was not really defining Lews Therin memories as his own except for occasional flashes where he "lost" himself. So to Lews Therin Demandred means alot, but to Rand he is just another Forsaken who hates him for reasons that existed thousands of years prior to his being born.

Look at this from another angle - He's thinking about possible hiding places.

He knew they would follow him into the Three-Fold land. He knew one of the Forsaken will infiltrate the Black Tower. He suspected that one would infiltrate the Seanchan high command. He probably suspects there is one in the White Tower, and probably one in Shara.

As to why he hasn't obsessed about Demandred... there's probably nothing he can do, but be wary. Or he's planning to snare Demandred, and that just hasn't come up on screen.

i have always had a feeling that D is someone close to rand. im probally wrong  but it kinda makes sense, with the whole chaos and betrayl and pain thing that they were told to bring to him i know this is gana get shot down prob by luckers but i have a feeling it is either dobraine or darlin they both have power bases one of them is a king the other is building an army. i think either would bring pain chaos and betraly with what ever they do. im sure im wrong

I agree with Mike above on the subject of Rand's thoughts on Demandred and where he may be et cetera.  Though I really don't want Rand to have to fight Demandred.  He really does have a lot of plates on his tables.  There are only two volumes left to come, and a battle with Demandred will simply take too heavy a tole on Rand.

I want Demandred to be laid low by Logain or some other.  There will be such poetic justice in that.  Demandred turned to the Shadow out of jealousy of Lews Therin.  And in the end, Demandred falls not to his hand reborn but the hand of his servant :D!
