In the game of mafia, like in many games there are all star players. People who stand above and beyond the rest. I would like to talk about people who you think have shaped the game, and made it their own,

I would like to start by talking about four distinguished players.

Kivam - He is the name behind the Kivam's gambit. He revolutionized the game, and made it impossible to trust anyone. His cool intellect, and dead on logic, have one him many games and I can only hope to hone it and emulate it. He makes me want to cultivate my logic and become a more reserved player from my normal crazy logic.

Wes/DPR - Probably the most famous name when you think of mafia mods and players. He has made several games that leave people shaking with awe. He has a flair for the dramatic side of mafia and he seems to always know what to post and when to post it. I admire DPR for all the things that he has achieved for the way he makes his games and just the way he plays in general.

Nae - She just has a way with the game. Everything she says hits dead center, and when she posts it is always with reason and force. She holds the game's integrity to the highest standards and would never cheat. When she posts people listen and she has a knack for steering the game to meet her own means. I would love to be able to take the game like she does and just spin it in any direction.

Verb - One of the most renowned players in current day mafia. I know in most the games I have ever modded, I have asked him to play because of his wit and humor he brings to the game. Not only is he fun to post with and he livens the game up, but he challenges you, he is a master of saying one thing and doing something else, sort of a mafia duplicity.

Those four players, like I have already stated are the the old guard. They were the pioneers and some of the best players around DM.

How about any of you, who do you like in madern mafia, and why?

We just talkin oldbies here?  I like Kivam and Mynd the most out of anyone I've seen.  Also, it was awesome playing in Wes's Call-Your-Shot game with those people you mentioned and Talya, Alys, Barm, Far and probably a couple more I can't recall off the top of my head.  Oh yeah, I like pandy's style.

Of the real old people?

Alys was always one of the best, as was Sirayn. Kison ran the first game that I ever participated in, and Talya was the first to introduce a non-stock role.

Hmm... I think it was Raena that first introduced mafia to the site in its modern form. Though for some time they did consider them to be werewolf games.

I didn't play at the beginning, but I played damn near the beginning. I think there's only a handful that I never really played with, such as Zy and goldy...

My perspective:

My mentor to the game was Nae.  I still learn from her to this day.  She has an UNCANNY ability to spot DPR anywhere, and I wish I could replicate that, lol.

To me, the big three are Kiv, Wes, and Sirayn.  I only played in 1 game with Sira, but read several others.  My God is she incredible.  If I honestly had to pick the best, it would be her, with Wes & Kiv close behind.

We all try to have our own "style", but I think I've taken the most from Wes & Kiv.  From Kiv, his "win spectacularly or die trying" attitude, and from Wes his flair for the dramatic (still trying to learn that one, lol).

But honestly, we've got an awesome group of players here, and I'm glad to be a part of it.

You can talk about any player on this thread, old or new. Just talk about who you like ir admire.

I don't know most of the older players you guys are talking about. Barmy, I don't think I've ever even seen you play, except for DPR's Call Your Shot game where I died really early. I confess I stopped following it after I was killed.

Verb, your post made me smile. I totally agree on Wes' flair for the dramatic, and am working on adopting it into my own playstyle. I didn't know Kivam's motto. Odd, mine is similar "Win spectacularly, but if you end up losing, do that spectacularly as well" or something like that. I have to admit, when I lose, I LOSE! lol

Now, if we're talking mods, my hands-down favorites are DPR and Pete. They are both extremely creative mods, and I rarely miss a game from either one of them.

I immensely enjoy playing Wes' and Pete's games, it's always guaranteed to be crazy good fun. I'm too new to have really seen the old timers (shall we say) play, except in the odd game or two, so can't make judgements on that score. There are plenty of newer players who are very good, Pete, Lily and Pookie immediately spring to mind. Nae isn't new, but is a great player too.

There are more, but I just got up and am not yet totally awake yet - when I remember I'll post  :)

Pete, you are an amazing player, too, you know. I can't get over how you hit the nail on the head so often when you're town, and as mafia... well, you know there's nobody I'd rather be teamed with. Sweet of you not to mention yourself here, but someone should. You deserve it.

I have to chime in. I know I haven't been playing long, but the one player who has totally knocked me off my feet with how impressive they are is Kivam. Seriously, the man complains about his rep, but he is a force to be reckoned with, and the rep doesn't even totally prepare you for it!

Also, as far as mods go, I really enjoy playing Lily's games the most. There are a few mods tied for second, but Lily is just the right kind of mod for how I like to play mafia. I also enjoyed the one game of Pete's I played, Ed's weird game in SG, and what I lived through in Talya's LotR game. ;D

I have to give props to Red, Aemon and Lily for being great mods. I've really enjoyed the creativity of their games - all three of them have this great talent to create a distinct mood or story to their games. Red in particular writes some outstanding scenes in her games!

I've learned a lot by seeing Pete, Lily, Nae, Verbal, DPR, and Kivam in action in the games - some of them I've only had the chance to be in one game with but it was enough to see some really great plays in action! I see these guys as the heavy hitters of mafia here!

Out of the 1g players, Sirayn is the best, hands down. Kivam is the king of logic, and Alys, the dude, kison, Talya, Far, and Barm are all excellent players. Loki and Danya as well - there are a lot more I'm forgetting, I'm sure.

2g players - Nae and Leelou, Verbal and Pandy jump right out. Mynd is awesome when he's not setting the grass on fire to burn the snakes, and for that metter - there's a whole group of really sharp players on MJ.

The 3g players who are active now are great - Pete has done a lot to add to the game, especially as a mod. Lily and Red (and others) are about to blow people away with Harry Potter.

All in all, the important thing is to keep it fun.

And why does everyone think I'm dramatic?

Because you would never think of doing a russian roulette on a game thread.  ::)

What's wrong with that? Now, if it were naked except for sparkles, on a tightrope over an alligator pit - that would be dramatic.

Pardon me - I've got to jot down a few ideas for my next game. And next weekend...

You mean you haven't already done something like that in a game?

The main one I can recall right now is Nae's Movie Madness game.  I was excited to be in a game with you and I was Angelina so I thought it would be funny to flirt with you.  Unfortunately, you just lurked.  I probably should've just taken the solo win that game because you didn't deserve a win.  Oh yeah and then there were the Princess Bride games.  In the MJ one, I thought the "Verbal Gambit" was about as original as a dog named Fido, and in the DM one, You allowed me to win as cult when like half of my recruits failed.

Hey hey, the Verbal Gambit in the MJ game was AWESOME.  I had peacesells state on thread that the mafia and cult needed to join forces in order to beat the town.  We (the cult) had recruited a mafia member, and they didn't know it.  We would have helped direct their NK as we'd been roleblocking it, and then once they thought it was all tied up, we would have revealed that we had one of theirs, re-roleblocked them, and lynched them all.  Epic win.

Buuut....our mafia insider got NKed that night and it all went to hell.  Almost scavenged a win, though...lost in endgame I believe.

But DPR posted that the idea was awesome, and that was a huge compliment...even though he thought it was coming from somebody else, lol.  I even saw the "join forces with other scum teams" thing used in a few other games after that.

I bolded the important parts. ;)
