I thought of what inspiring music I would use to get the moral of the soldiers before they go out to war, and I believe fast and agressive music is the best.

If I had the chance, I would use Hatebreed, and other bands to make my soldiers go

You get what I mean. It would better the odds! What do you guys think?

Edit: That kind of language is not allowed here.

Bagpipes. Given the choice between bagpipes behind you and the enemy in front, a suicidal charge suddenly seems so much more tempting. Failing that, I would go without music and simply give a speech, to fire their hearts! And then tell them that anyone who retreats will be shot.

Point is that the human body may perform betterwhen listening to music. I dunno if soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan are allowed to listen to music, but if they do, many of them listen to bands like Pantera, Hatebreed etc. Heavy metal to be precise. Heavy metal (not all) have an ability to make you jump, or if you listen to Hatebreed, want to punch someone. Hence the term ager metal.

Think about it: Aiel armies listening to Hatebreed just before charging into battle. Oh dear God those poor trollocs.

Music is a cultural thing. For someone living in a world where metal does not exist, Hatebreed would just be noise. And chances are the Aiel would start the battle by stabbing whoever put that noise on.

We might percieve it as something that kicks aggression up a notch, but we live in a society where this music is seen as aggressive, not only because of the sound, but because of how the entire subculture is set up. And if you take a thorough look at a band like hatebreed, remove the effects, play it on a more normal level, and it is not very aggressive.

What effects? Every note in their music from all of their different instruments put toghether create something that makes you feel pumped, or hyperactive in one way. Sure it could be percieved as noise, but it would still aggrevate people.

No, it creates something that makes you, and other fans of Hatebreed feel pumped up. There is nothing magical about their compositions that means that said feeling is in any way universal. Remove the effects, slow the tempo down, and sing normally, and what is left is no more aggressive than Bill Hailey.

You are listening to music through a cultural filter, you instinctively know how to "respond" to different kinds of music. Heck, quite often you do not even have to listen, an examination of the album sleeve provides clues as to what kind of respond the artist is aiming for.

Now, take Aiel, or any group of people from WOT. They have a completely different cultural filter. And incidently, we do know quite a bit about Aiels usage of music before battle, with their chanting of battle related lyrics.

Well, we do not know exactly how it sounds of course. We do however know a few things that provides us with some clues. Most cultures who use(d) singing in the same (or very similar) way tend to share things like the melody being quite simplistic, often repetative, with a steady beat. This kind of singing is less influenced by any cultural filters, because the purpose is function. You need a melody that can easily be joined by the entire group, to boost the groups confidence, hopefully put some fright into your opponent, and this to a beat that is good for charging.

i'm pretty sure that it's been said that they use normal dance-music when they fight and not what we would normaly see as battle-music.

so probably a little more complex than just a repeteative beat.

good point :)

but i just don't see that kind of music as "dance" music, especially not at the time of WOT.

I would say on the contrary. At the time of WOT, especially with a nomadic people like Aiel, dance and battle music would be closely related. However, keep in mind that when we speak of dance here, it is not exactly waltz we are talking about...

no, i think that in the wetlands, battlemusic is the drums with simple beats just like it was/is here.

dance and battle are probably closely related for the Aiel.

because of this they choose to play what others would call dance music

and not the normal, monotoned music in battle.

why else would Jordan even point out that they play dance music?

Mh...even though the "official" soundtrack seems mediocre for the most part, I think the following track of it would actually work for Aiel singing:

(that not withstanding, still a nice enough track me thinks)

That aside, if I were to choose a battle-hymn for my soldier-fanatics, it would be

.

Replace Moscow with whatever capital I might choose for my empire of evil and Germans with fascists, and it would do fine. Rawr.

I would think the idea music before a battle would be either, A: The lands national anthem (im not a nationalist, but still hearing our national anthem "

still makes me proud, the text is focusing on our past and that we will endure) or B: some music with a fast but steady beat (drums or some such) because it would get the adrenalin pumping.

Oh btw i can't remember who asked, but the american soldiers heard Heavy metal just before they entered Iraq.

DhaiMon, the song you gave me, the Aiel Approach song made me think of me having sex while being high on ex for some reason.

Fjong are you from Scandinavia or something? Fjong is "something pretty" in Norwegian and I was wondering. However national anthems do make one proud, even if don't live in that country. However, and no offence to all americans, but the US national anthem is so boring I turned it off after about 20 seconds.

Again, no offence, I just didn't like it.
