BSG and Firefly

Well, no one can answer that, becuase it all depends on what you consider 'okay' for a 14 year old to watch. ;)

I've been watching firefly, it has some language, maybe a few F bombs here and there (don't quote me on this), there is sex, but nothing on screen, aka you only see them 'after' laying in bed, and sometimes just alot of skin but no real nudity, and even that is few and far between...

As for BSG, I dunno, I haven't watched the new season, but its a soap opera, so its probably similar to the above, just more extremes. ;)

Firefly invented their own cussing system.  IE gorram, in stead of damn, all the way up the line.  A pretty good deal of violence, but most of it is  PG-13, in the vein of spaghetti westerns.

I can't see BSG being a big draw to a 14 yr old unless they are really very mature.  There are a slew of adult topics, an affair, as well as some pretty pointed scenes about prisoner abuse(in a later season there are some pointed and quasi-graphic discussions about some sexual abuses to a prisoner).  Language wise, they invented their own cusses too, frak being the show's f-bomb.

On a personal note, good choice in series. ;)  Be sure to catch Serenity after Firefly, since it only ran one season JW wrapped it up in the movie.  More or less.  BTW, what are the big things you run parental interference with, violence, sex, language, horror imagery, etc?

Not gunna answer for Karana, but when I was younger, my parents basically had no restrictions on movies, language, violence, or sexual (well, excluding out-right porn obviously, but a lil nudity here and there wasn't to big of a deal). And I think at around 6+ was when any 'real' restrictions were taken out, simply becuase prior to that, I probably didn't watch much of anything. :P

I've been watching movies like Chucky, Friday the Thireenth, Nightmare on elm street, hellraiser, puppet master (Both versoins) ect since I was a wee lil kid. :P

And I turned out just fine!

I think Firefly would be ok for her.  As stated above, all bad language is in Chinese.  While there is some violence... nothing sticks out as too bad for children to watch.

Also stated above, BSG deals with many social issues.  I know Kelly is pretty intelligent and this may spark good dicussions between you two.  But there is some sex scenes which may be uncomfortable to watch with your child present.  They also suppliment bad language with things like Frack.

I would say Firefly would be safe for her and BSG would be questionable.

Thanks for the input.  You're right, she is really smart, and she entered high school this fall.  We have watched some questionable movies in the past and been uncomfortable (Juno and Waitress come to mind).  It's not so much that I want to censor her, as it's just... weird... to watch some things with your kid (or in her case, your mom).

Tenshin, I am far more concerned with violence than I am with sex or nudity, etc.  We watched Sweeney Todd and she was weeping and horrified at the violence and blood.  It was awful.  Although I liked it... does that say something about our inuredness to violence?

We watch a lot of fantasy (just finished a wrap up of the extended versions of the Lord of the Rings) and she seems to do fine with fantasy style violence.  I think we'll watch Firefly and go from there.

Oh, and Tenshin, I did see Serenity right after it came out on DVD.  That's why I've been wanting to see Firefly for so long.

Well if you to are into fantasy movies, then the only ones I can recommend, if you can get past the 'kiddyness' of them... (Though from my expierience women love those types of movies, I find it insane!)

You could try the

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Golden Compass

Mr. Bean's Holiday (this movie is seriously funny, specially if you watched Mr. Bean when you were younger, Its seriously classic, its made for the 'all ages' :P )

Bee Movie (like shrek, but bees, has jerry sienfield, not HORRIBLE but its got some... sienfield humor in it... :P )

Bridge to Terabithia

some other random sugjestions..

1408

The Orphanage

Death at a Funeral

Pi: Faith in Chaos

Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth **One of the BEST MOVIES I have ever seen, no violence, no speical effects, very little  language, and definately no nudity**

Sunshine

TV series?

Well, if you like vampires, and you don't have HBO, hit up the all-time-classic

Forever Knight

You could also check out John from Cincinatti, but I tell you right now, that tv show, has a LOT of language.

The other tv series I'd recommened, aren't on dvd yet. ;)

Firefly has one scene that might be a bit inappropriate. Small spoiler.

When the bounty hunter guy or whatever he was, comes into to the ship and ties up Kaylee and asks all serious: "Now Kaylee, have you ever been raped?"

Completely off topic, I just watched the first 3 eps of Firefly, and I liked them.  Dale wasn't too keen on them though.  Whatever, I'll just finish them on my own as we get discs, then I don't have to wait for him to get home from work.

;D
