The newest entry in Universal's DVD Originals offerings, The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian, commenced principal photography in Capetown, South Africa on October 1, 2007. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions is co-producing with Film Afrika and ApolloMovie. Universal Studios Home Entertainment is distributing the all-new epic adventure, which expands the line's presence into the live-action adventure arena for the first time. The film is slated for release on DVD in 2008.

The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is the thrilling prequel to The Scorpion King, the action blockbuster that starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Mathayus, the fearsome warrior king of an ancient desert empire. The new film, a heroic tale of loyalty and betrayal filled with heart-stopping action and thrilling visual effects, tells the story of how the young Mathayus rose to become the Scorpion King.

Shot entirely in South Africa, this entertaining blend of myth, magic and muscle is directed by Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction, Highlander) and stars Michael Copon (pictured, "Beyond the Break," Bring It On: In It to Win It) as the young hero Mathayus, Simon Quarterman ("Murder Rooms: The Patient's Eyes") as the wily Ari, Karen David (The Colour of Magic) as the beautiful Layla, Ralf Moeller (Pathfinder) as the fierce warrior Pollux, and current six-time Ultimate Fighting Championship king Randy Couture (Invincible), holder of three heavyweight and three light heavyweight titles, as the charismatic and powerful villain Sargon.

"'The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian' is by far our most ambitious DVD Originals production ever in terms of the scope and quality of the sets, visual effects, fight sequences and stunt work," said Glenn Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Family Productions. "Because of the remarkable success of the DVD Originals product line, we are committed to producing a diverse slate of films based on proven franchises to help satisfy the growing demand for high quality entertainment on DVD."

The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian is written by Randall McCormick (Speed 2, Titan A.E.). David Wicht, Thomas Becker and Jörg Westerkamp are co-producers and Sean Daniels and Jim Jacks (both of The Mummy and The Scorpion King) are the executive producers. The film's production team includes director of photography Glynn Speekaert, production designer Tom Hannam, editor John Gilbert and costume designer Diana Cilliers. The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian tells the story of the teenage warrior Mathayus and his quest for justice and honor against the evil and powerful King Sargon.

Omen: They didn't get a quote from someone actually working on the movie, but from an it's-not-an-art-it's-a-business guy, who basically said, "It had better make more money than our recent flops. Buy our DVDs, dammit!"

Wow... your right.

You say that like it doesn't happen very often.  ;D

What do  you call a prequel to a prequal... a granprequel?

You call it Sh|t.

I am sure this is going straight to DVD due to the fact that the Mummy 4 is in production as well.

I bet it comes out direct to DVD at the same time or just before Mummy 4...  One of those promotional things...

Rob Cohen gives us an update via his blog about filming Jet Li:

"Today, I shot Jet Li on his black stallion riding into battle in his jade armor. He looked nothing short of an Emperor. He has been totally professional and warm to me and the entire crew, like the prince he truly is."

He also gives us and update on the score for the film and rubs it in our faces about how awesome he is:

"As to the music: guys, trust me. Randy and I have done two classic scores (DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY and DRAGONHEART) that continue to be used in trailers and commercials a decade and a half later. This will be an original score with new themes, played by the London Symphony Orchestra recorded at Abbey Road Studios. There will nothing “synth paddy” about it. It will be massive, thematic, and pulsing.

"I have great respect for Al Silvestri but this is a new, re-booted “Mummy” and it will have the score to match."

Now if only the prospects of the movie itself was good, we wouldn't be so worried. The first Mummy was a very entertaining film, despite it being a collection of so many other films before it. Is anyone else excited about Jet Li as the villain? I'm still on the fence. The Mummy should hit theaters sometime next summer.

In all reality I think most people refer to multi movie groups as series and as such even though it is a prequel, Scorpion King is the 3rd Mummy series movie.  The Mummy 2 is titled The Mummy Returns, The Mummy 3 is titled Scorpion King, etc.

Still how are they going to make a prequel to The Scorpion King about his rise to power, when that is exactly what TSK was about.  He came from the ruins of a civilization the lsat of his kind killed an emperor (Sorry Emp) and gained rule of a kingdom.

Aww, go easy on them, they partied hardy last night...

And as punishment, they'll be partying hardy tonight, too! MWAhahahahaha!

Oh, and, umm... the Mummy movies haven't been too horrible, either. I may end up picking them up from the Bargain Bin at some point.
