a friend of mine keeps complaining that we never see any passion between the chraracters in love.

i kind of like the subtlety, and i dont think there is any need to 'peek between the bedcurtains'as such

does anyone agree with this? id love to know

I think it depends on what type of passion scene we're talking about. If we're talking a George R. R. Martin describing each physical detail, I would say no. These books aren't like that, and they're not ment to be. But a passion scene like in a Robin Hobb novel where it would describe the feelings and emotions of the characters, I could go for that.

I, for one, have never thought that the characters had enough "passion" scenes to be realistic. I mean they're like 20 for god sake, they'd be doing it ALL THE TIME. Sure Rand is constantly with Min, and Perrin hasn't been because of the kiddnapping and all, and Mat's been going from girl to girl to girl for quite a while until meeting Tuon, but I don't know, maybe it's because he doesn't talk about it.

I think the books show a passion on a higher level then that. Perrin's passion for Faile is more then animal urges, and same with Rand with Min, Aviendha, and Elayne. It's more a passion to see the other person safe and happy and secure, not to jump in the sack.

i think that maybe the passion would be more realistic if rand wasnt in love with three people- i find it a little bit unrealistic and i think the passion in the book is good however people i have talked to said there was too much

And kadere you contradicted yourself in your post because you said that they so be at it all the time and then said they were lol

lol. Yeah I know. I was thinking about it while writting it and I was like "Mat's never had sex with Tuon" and then I was like "Oh, but he has had sex with like a million women."

So yeah, that was a goof. Basically I think they should be having more. Rand's only had Elayne and Aviendha once! I mean COME ON! I know Min is the hottest, but still. He would TOTALLY be having a foursome in reality.

i happen to think that there is enough there to satisfy me

my friend is german (no offences intended to anyone german out there) and they are very into "passion" as a people...very accepting, even demanding of it,

i was just wondering if i was the prudish one when i said i thought RJ had the right balance

Inara, you ought to add a 'I think it's just right ' option as none of the ones available seem to cover this.

lol... just read your last post! I am german.. maybe I am not normal  because I like the fact that the story is not constantly interupted by what happens between the sheets. For me the story is why I read the books... there are plenty of passion specialist books out there if that's what people want. WoT is a story first, second, third............ (and I have enough experience and imagination to fill in the other bits  )

Having said all that... guess it depends what we mean with passion. Maybe you friend is talking about romantic moments and 'I love you' type things rather than the bedsheets...

A foursome probably would be completely out of character and tradition, but oh my god that's what I would have been thinking about from the first. :P

As for them all being sado-masicists, yeah some of them certainly are. The Sea Folk especially.

the passion in these books is right where it needs to be in my opinion. To me, all the bedtime fun is implied in other text.

Also, the fact that the bedtime activities isn't mentioned that much is more a way to reveal the character of Rand, Mat, and Perrin. They all grew up in a very quiet, private region. Their entire childhood was spent without really witnessing these acts very much (except for the "walk in on mom and dad" that every child has at some point).

To me, the casual references hint at the actuality quite effectively.

I don't think there's too much passion and I don't think there's too little in WoT. My opinion is it's a good balance. I do like passion in novels, but I don't like totally blue almost pornographic. I enjoy reading extremely fictional novels, by that I mean novels that only imagination (let's exclude CGI for now) can bring to life. My vote is let's leave the well raunchy stuff to life itself, where it's most fun (and of course to film, for those of us that are into that! hehe) :D
