The sun rose on suspicion.

With fewer voices in the square, the silence between them felt louder. Everyone watched everyone. Each word carried weight. Each glance, potential doom.

In the middle of it all stood Samuel Seabury—not defiant, not pleading. Preaching.

He stepped forward like a man stepping behind a pulpit, voice crisp, hands raised as though addressing a restless crowd.

“Hear ye, hear ye!” he declared, his tone clear and practiced. “Trust that the right thing to do… is let me live.”

The pause that followed was long.

But trust was a currency the town no longer had.

When the final vote came, Seabury faltered for just a moment—only then realizing his words had become just another echo in a town that had stopped listening.

He bowed his head, straightened his cuffs, and walked away with the cadence of a sermon unfinished.

He has been… erased from the narrative.
