[Experimental Basic] Tournament Mafia sign-ups

Basically this:

I think this will look more complicated than it really is? Villagers should only need to choose the more villagery of two options a bunch of times. Scum get to strategize a bit more than usual but don't need to worry about PRs.

This will be a fully open set-up. I did not balance check this with anybody and I would appreciate thoughts/criticisms in sign-up. If it's hopeless I'll just revert to a conventional build.

Elimination from the tournament does not result in a flip/elimination from the game.

There will be 5 round 1 pairings (10 players total). 2 goons and a symp who knows who the wolves are vs 7 vanilla town. There will be a ~24-48 hour N0 where scum can fix the round 1 pairings however they like. Thread will be open.

Round 1 match-ups are announced. Players have 72 hours to vote on who to eliminate in each pairing.

Night phase: 24 hours, thread is closed. Mafia swap out two winners for one loser. Both winners will flip and be removed from the game. Additionally, mafia kill 1 loser and fix Round 2 pairings.

Round 2: 4 players remaining in the tournament and 7 remaining in the game, one 48 hour session to determine both winners.

Round 3: If the game has not ended, there will be a final 24 hour phase to determine a winning faction between the two remaining contestants.

The players with the most votes at deadline lose. Scum always win ties.

Philosophy: This is a fundamentally difficult set-up for wolves to win, because they are required to be more villagery than a lot of the starting field. Skating by long enough to kill off the strong villagers isn't necessarily going to cut it. I started out with an 8-2 build and a lot of more complex background mechanics that would allow for town to produce a coroner report. It required quite a few epicycles to prevent undesirable mechanical locks and resulted in a whole bunch of stipulations for an open set-up that players didn't really need to read but would inevitably get confused by anyway. In trying to reduce both issues, I reached the above. Basically scum kill 3 people on N1 and those are all the flips you get, but you never have to directly catch them if you correctly identify enough villagers, and you always know in a D3 scenario that exactly one of two people is the remaining wolf, while 7 players are alive to discuss it. This still seemed unfair to the scum team, so I reduced phase lengths and frontloaded everything into Day 1. Let me know what you think; I'm open to modification before the game starts. The core idea is to have a tournament-styled build, which I'm sure exist but I have never seen before.

I feel like I'm missing something :( scum control all Day 1 lynches?

Then if the symp survives Day 1 what prevents him claiming and mafia fixing the final rounds with 4 town and guaranteeing a win?

And in fact what prevents symp claiming at the start, scum manipulating lynches and rounds etc and straight out winning?

Oh wait, the round 2 are the winners from the previous round not anyone still in the game?

Scum would control the D1/D2 brackets to my understanding.

So those who win their round advance? Feasibly couldn't scum win D2 opening up if both Mafia and the symp made it past the opening bracket? It'd be 3/1

Scum would only win if they win both D2 match-ups or the D3 match-up.

There will always be at least 4 villagers alive in the game.

Scum (not including the symp) get to choose who faces who each day.

So in theory scum could correctly predict on N0 that player x and player y are the going to be consensus town and pair them together, then kill them both off N1 along with any one other villager still in the tournament.

Scum could even all lose round 1 and still win the game, if they swap one of their own back in and manage to not get voted off the island again.

If both goons make it to round 2 they could pair themselves together and guarantee that one makes it to the final round.

Basically they have a lot of options but still have to either generate a perfect N0 set-up or else be among the 4 most villagery people in the game.

I'd be worried about having three dead and confirmed townies still able to talk and vote (?). That will play a huge factor into it. Also this game seems more like it would maybe favor hyper activity as to where some will struggle with the pace. It may just come down to who is louder/has time to post more in the head to head voting.

Doesn't work like that.  Scum's N1 kills are removed from the game entirely.

So like

D1 is 10 players in the game and 10 contestants in the tournament.

D2 is 7 players in the game and 4 contestants in the tournament.

D3 is 7 and 2.

That's better. OP says on D3 there's a guaranteed one scum still on the board and 7 villagers alive to discuss it.

I'll pretend you meant players.

So this would still play out like a regular Mafia game but instead of voting one guy to lynch you're basically voting who to keep around? By voting the other guy if necessary? Not sure how you're configuring the votes, for/against or whatever.

Votes will be against because I figured that will be less confusing, would make that really clear in the vote counts.

To an earlier point, yeah it does kind of favor higher volume players.  I'm not sure how to work around that because I viewed phase length as part of the balance; villagers get less time to be obvious/adjust if scum catch them off guard with their N1 actions.

I kind of had Cory's Escape from the Prom game in mind when I put this together (dude how did you defriend me already?  I haven't even clicked submit yet.)

Challenging as heck man. I'll play

Cheers!

If it sucks though really just tell me I'm being dumb and I'll switch to a normal game with a bunch of vigilantes or something.

Either Monday or whenever it fills.

I'm thinking 24 hour phases after D1 might not be manageable given that games here have been really low volume lately. I don't want there to be a ton of time but if it's so short half of the field doesn't show up to vote then that's a problem. Maybe make Round 2 48 hours.
