Case in point: Perrin accidentally kills his wife in episode one.  That’s not in the book, he’s not even married. Amazon made up a character for the show just to kill her off.

The reason he's married in the show is because the chacters are aged up, and Perrin mentions a girlfriend he like would have married if he'd stayed in the two rivers.  His wife in the show is based on her.

He was likely planning on marrying her after his apprentIceship.  So, in the show, he's older, has his own forge, and married her.

  2. When I was first reading the series I had a theory that Fain was being groomed to become the literal Dark One, or at least his living vessel.  That the Dark One would literally take his body and sould an Rand and the DO, using Fain's body would have an Epic battle, with Rand being the Creator in human form and Fain being the DO.

  3. No ruler is ever completely respected.  There is always politics, and there are always people wanting to take power.  She and Moiraine are also doing something that the Tower would see as treason, since they are letting a man who can channel go free.  This is mentioned several times in the first couple books.  You saw their reaction when Verin figured out who Rand was, and what they were doing in The Great Hunt, I'm sure.  They beleived they were either going to have to murder her to keep it secret or were both going to be stilled and executed as traitors.

  4. If you go by the official book timeline, we are in the first age.

Robert Jordan specifically included references to modern society, such as Mosk and Merc, the two giant brothers fighting with spears of fire (American and Moscow (Russia) fighting with nuclear missiles) Quen Lisbeth who rulled the World was a reference to Queen Elizabeth and the British Empire.

Lenn, who walked on the moon, and his daughter (can't remember her named) who flew on a eagle of fire are a jumble of references to the space race.  Lenn is supposed to be John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth.  The legend attributes other astroanughts accomplishments to him.  The giant Eagle is a reference to the space shuttle.

There are plently of legends from the First Age that are references to modern society, because in the Wheel of Time universe, the books take place in the far future, thousands of years from now.  They even have a Chrystler hood ordament in a museum at one point, and the character who finds it (either Elayne or Nynaever, I can't remember) thinks it's strange because the material is softer than it looks (It's made of plastic, which hasn't been made since before the AoL)

The second age begins when the global society is united due to the discovery of the One Power.

  5. Ofically, Illian is supposed to have a Dutch accent, but most people think it sounds more like Westcountry accents from England.

The Seanchan are supposed to have Texan accent.

The Two Rivers are supposed to have Irish accents, as are western Andor, such as Baerlon.  Though I always pictured the TR as having more of a Welsh accent, which would make it distinct like it is supposed to be in the books.  It would also play off of the fact that they are famous for their longbows, and the Welsh were the ones who created the longbow, and used ones much like the Two Rivers bows, and were famous for their skill.

I always picured Tear as having Spanish accents to go with their oiled bearded and clearly spanish based culture.  They were one of the few countries that had a culture that heavily resembled an actualy real world culture.......peasents not being allowed to carry weapons....nobles can rape and steal from peasants with impunity......famous for their horses, olives/olive oil, and wine.........pretty much everything about Tear screams  Spain.

Please read the thread you're commenting on.

I'm not confused about what Winternight is in the books.

The lengthy post immediately prior to yours was specifically about how the show differs from the book in regard to Bel Tine and Winternight.

If you'd like to address any of the points in that post, please feel free.

The onl explicit change was added lanterns as a Bel Tine tradition.  There is no exidence that anything else changed, other than the attack happening on Bel Tine instead of Winternight.  Just because something wasn't shown on screen, doesn't mean it was removed, and could easily be shown at some other point.

Except that in the show it's no longer even the same time of year.

Which means that the "winter" part of Winternight is meaningless.  And explains why it's never mentioned.

According to another detail mentioned in the episode (wool having already been collected and sent to market) Bel Tine is now much closer to Midsummer - if not actually taking the place of Sun Day.

I think you're confused.  it's not called Winternight because it takes place in the middle of winter.  It's supposed to be the very last day of winter, and Bel Tine is the first day of spring.  The reason it's cold and snowy on Winternight in the books is because the DO is effecting the weather.  It's supposed to be far more warm, which is mentioned numerus times in EOTW, because their worried about the tobac crops dying because of the unsual cold.    It's supposed to lead into the bowl of winds storyarc because they are trying to correct the weather.  They are likely dropping the bowl of winds, which means there is no reason to have the distorted weather.

  8. Technically, they ARE two separate occassions, in the books, just like Christmas Eve and New Years Eve are separate from Christmas Day and New Years Day.  Each one has certain traditions that are distint and not necessarily shared with the other.

Winternight is more about the food, drink, and gift giving, while Bel Tine focuses on dancing, contests, etc.

The Show doesn't necessarily remove one or the other.  They don't explicitly say that Winternight doesn't exist.  They could have simply moved the attack back one day and had it take place on Bel Tine instead of Winternight, and had Rand, Tam, Lan, and Moiraine all arrive on that same day instead.  And they also changed the Bel Tine tradition to lighting lanterns instead of the ones from the books (dancing the spring pole, contests, etc.)

  9. Cold Open will like involve Mat for E1.  They will want o quickly show what happened after Moiraine sent her message.

He likely is still connected to the dagger, which sets up the plot.  I get the feeling that season two will more closely follow the book plot than season 1 did.  The gurls go back to Tar Valon, Moiraines sends Min to act as a contact between her and Suian, they meet Elayne, Galad and Gawyn,  They get tricked by Liandrin, and end up in Falme.

Uno and the other Shainarans join them because it was their duty to protect the horn.   Mat goes because he needs the dagger to be fully healed.  Rand and Perrin join to help Mat.  They all end up in Falme.

Big showdown between Rand and Ishy.  Rand if recognized as the Dragon.  Whether or not the inclde TDR,or part of it is up in the air

I don't necessarily think they're going to go with the Tower split any earlier than in the books, but I suspect when they do it they will kill Siuan off instead of having her and Leane escape.  The reason being -who they have cast, I cannot see someone of Sophie Okonedo's  calibre sitting on their heels for a couple of years to be a regular in a TV series like this.

If the did keep her alive, they'd like use an actress with similar looks to poray them.  Remember, being still made them younger in appeance.  The characters could be portrayed by younger, lesser known actors.

You actually believe "Dumai's Wells" will happen?

At this point they might refer to "something...something" as "Dumai's Wells" but don't get your hopes up that it will resemble anything like the awesome chapter they'll rip it from.

It was a major story arc for Rand's deveopment.  I highly doubt they will cut it.  They need it to further the storyline.

  12. The whole point of the scene is to allow Moiraine a reason not to come back.  The other sisters are already suspicious of her travels, and her friendship with Suian.  This kills two birds with one stone.  It gives her an excuse, and also cuts her off from the Blues and their eyes and ears, which many would see as weakening her ability to take action and gives the impression of a break between the two of them.

I do see similarities between this and Elaida's proclamation, but not to the extent that it would take anything away.  Elaida's requirement would require an oath of absolute fealtyand defference to her, which would, in effect, make her an absolute authority with even the Hall being required to obey.  She could literally order them to change tower law to put her in power for life if she wanted.

I especially dont think it takes awa from Dumai Wells, because the reason that was important is because it was an outsider, and a man who can channel doing it.

  13. Wiinternight is the final night of winter.  Bel Tine is the first day of spring.

The lanterns and dancing are done on Bel Tine in the books.  On Winternight, the go to each others house eat, drink, and exchange gifts.  Rand and Tam arrive in the morning on the same day as Winternight, but Moiraine and Lan had arrived the day before.  The attack on the vilage occurs that night, and Rand carries Tam into the village the next morning, on Bel Tine

  14. I don't personally see an issue with the way the towers look.

Look at Stormseat/The Shattered Plains in the Stormlight Archives.  It's deteriorated so much that most people can't even tell it was once a city.  There's no telling what sort of effect the blight would have on buildings.  It can easily be explained that the blight caused them to deteriorate much faster than normal and so the towers look like natural pillars.

I also don't have an issue with their placement.  The books never specify where the towers were relativeto each other, and there could be any number of reasons that the towers could be grouped together.

I always pictured it more as if the seven hills of Rome each had a tower on its crest.

Not spread out along the country's border (the way wachtowers would be) but still not all bunched right next to each other, either.  Spaced out similarly to the "topless towers" of Cairhien.

The are surrounded by the lakes, so they have to be in the same general area.

There is a big reason why they included Tar Valon and not Caemlyn, in book 1 you do not learn anything really about the Aes Sedai, given they are such a big part of the story for the TV show it is right that Rafe introduce the tower and the politics of the tower straight away. Caemlyn really is there as a city, it is there as a way to introduce Rand to Elayne but it doesnt actually achieve much in terms of the over story of EOTW that can't be moved to season 2.

I was talking about the village where they meet him in the show, not the books.

I had the idea that it was supposed to be white bridge, (due to it being referred to as a nearby town earlier in the show, and I was disgruntled that the bridge in the down was so rundown and rickety.

  17. Does any else get the feeling tha the reason they killed Algamar is because they are dropping Graendal?  His only storyline going forward is him and the other GC being controlled.  No evil blonde Dominatrix, no need for him to live.

I get the feeling that a sex crazy ssdistic woman with huge tits who keeps sex slaves would be a little much for Amazon.

  18. I would keep the main cast the same.

I would have made the Shainarans Japanese, in order to simplify the casting and make it more consistant.  Plus it would give an excuse to have Ken Wananabe as Lord Algamar.  You could literally take the whole cast of the Last Samurai minus Tom Cruise.  Hiroyuki Sanada would make a great Uno.

I would also simplify Tear, making them Spanish to match their primary cultural basis
