@Katherine and @Maximillion beat me to it. Overall I really like the article. But I continue to be concerned that Rafe’s driving motivation and even the dang show pitch itself is Wheel of Woke. If Rafe thinks strong female characters are the best thing about WOT, we’re in trouble.

WOT has plenty of strong female characters. And they sometimes did really cool and interesting stuff. They also consumed most of the principal “plotlines” - if you can even call them that - as this series went off the rails in the latter half of Jordan’s books.

I love WOT for the story of the Dragon, and I never would have picked a showrunner who pitched it like that. Good grief.

Beidomon , I enjoy reading your thoughts. There will be some who will just think your just a neanderthal man and discount your words based on that fact alone. But, I feel it's important to hear an "opposing" viewpoint. So, thank you.

  2. So loving what I've seen so far. Keep it up Amazon.

In regards to the Logain clip, the only thing I'm not sure about is how they represent channeling in it. I get the black is referencing the taint but how the CG shows the channeling effects just don't quite look right to me. I'm just not entirely sold with how they've chosen to represent channeling. Anyone feel similarly or have constructive thoughts on it.

    Thanks!

I agree that in some cases RJ's treatment of sexual preference, gender identity, and some other related topics is poorly handled. I forgive it because I know what it's like to grow up insulated from these topics and not gain a meaningful understanding of them until much later in life. As you say, they weren't prevalent in the public discourse until much more recently.

I think that these issues will be taken on by the writers and will probably have modern thinking applied to them in the adaptation. I can only hope that it's done with a light touch, but it almost seems necessary in a few cases. Halima definitely comes to mind. I don't think doing that would necessarily be pushing an agenda though. It's just being careful to distinguish a plot element like "Halima was punished by the Dark One" from an insidious message like "Being a trans person is a form of divine punishment." I don't think RJ meant the latter in any way, but it's easy to read into that at a glance, so I hope the adaptation can do the topic justice.

Is Halima even necessary to the storyline ? I'd say not.

  4. So excited for season 1 of The Wheel of Time TV Show. I just had a thought this morning that I'm sure many others have had well before my shower epiphany lol.

Am I correct in thinking that there aren't any Forsaken in Season 1 ? I havn't seen any actors cast to play Ishamael, Aginor and Bathemel.

If anyone has any different information on this please let me know and also I wonder how the Forsaken will be intertwined in the show.

Let me know what you folks think.

    Thanks!

I've read the initial description and followups how this is a story about Moraine and her companions adventures.  Well, not really.  Moraine is a central character but the Wheel of Time series is not a story about Moraine.  If anything, it's a story about Rand.  What I haven't read is any push back on this initial description.  I for one will be disappointed if the story presented to us truly tries to turn WOT TV into a story about Moraine.

I believe that the Moraine focus will be on the first episode for the most part. Most probably with scenes from the prequel in order to establish a backstory.

Here are the things I would ask of Rafe:

    1. The main photography of WOT series should be very colorful. Not washed out or dark like so many shows these days. The palette should be very similar to LOTR

    2. If you do the first thing then you can use different palettes and filters for the non-world settings such as tel'aran'rhiod, the Ways and Portal Stones

    3. Please do not make Min trans-gendered. There are many areas of the WOT world where they can lgbt inclusive, and I think they will and should-but I don't think Min is the character for that.

    4. Please, please please! for all that is good and holy make Taim Demandred as originally intended. And Logain should be the one to fight him.

    5. Use reincarnation very sparingly. It makes sense for Ishamael/Moridin but otherwise don't use it.

    6. This one will be controversial: Do not kill Lanfear and have Moiraine stuck in Finn-land for very long. Move the rescue up significantly and have Lanfear be a core protaganist for the entire series, and a weakended Moiraine who can really only advise.

    7.  With all respect to Effete above, I think it is important to show weaving both saidar and saidin fairly often. It is a story steeped in magic. Taking an understated more inferred approach to magic is the wrong choice IMO

    8. Completely dump Luc/Isam

    9. Use CGI for a lot of vanity shots, especially the cities, white tower, etc... They need to come alive. GOT shied away from this but WOT needs to be a place of awe

    10. Definitely show the visions of the Age of Legends

    11. Another controversial one: if the show is able to complete the series allow for an episode or 2 or even more AFTER the Last Battle. Show where the characters wind up and what they ultimately become ie Mat with Tuon, rebuilding a united Aes Sedai, Nynaeve and Lan (I would like to see the LB destroy the blight and N+L restoring Malkier, Rand  (Idea for post credits scene after series finale: modern day  archaeological dig, excitement over a big discovery and then a reveal of something maybe the ruins of Tar Valon or the Horn of Valere something like that.)

    HOWEVER

Here is the most important one: Make the show true to itself.  As the show goes on it will divert more and more from the books. Actors and writers put their own spin on the characters. The plot will become more and more divergent from the books.  Embrace that and go where it leads. GOT did not do this. They knew the ending but for the characters and events of those in the TV show that ending literally made no sense whatsoever. The ending should have been what was best for the TV show. Along these lines, the Last Battle as told in the books will likely be much different than what is in the books.

Min trans-gendered ? really. Please no. Don't do that to us Rafe. Any other character other than the main cast.

Morain's visit to Adelaas and Vandene is hardly essential. We just know that she spent some time studying there and that she was attacked. Most have taken place off-page, so it can easily take place off-screen. Morain can then briefly discuss this in the next section.

I didn't write anything about Mat's absence in the third book. There is a difference between focusing on a character and ignoring others.

My whole idea was based on the fact that Morain is presented as the main character in the present description of the WoT serial. I would like to keep this first book.

Morain then has several acts in the second book, but nothing extensive. If she left space to Rand, it would be clear that the Books aren't about Morain. Rand is then most of the third book off-page. Viewers can find out that even though it is Dragon Reborn again, it's not just only about him.

My thought may have been said already but I read the Moraine focus in the promo materials to be for the purposes of hiding the fact of who the Dragon Reborn is to watchers of the show who haven't read the books yet. This doesn't mean she isn't a huge locus but I think it's important to keep things in perspective.

I think the Moraine as central character will be mostly in the first couple episodes with her viewpoints gradually becoming one of many.

  9. In regards to Nae'blis' original post.

Please Rafe don't go down the cure word route. Hearing shit or fuck out of a characters mouth in

the WOT would be so utterly stupid. If curse words need to be added beyond the ones mentioned, then let

the writers create words rather than use the boring tripe of pushing modern idioms into a fantasy setting.

Also, we don't need WOT to look like GOT in regards to sex scenes or nudity. It's shameless catering to the lesser aspects of humanity. Be tasteful in your use but seeing nudity in every other episode etc, seems overkill and not necessary to me. I realize I'm probably in the minority here but that's how I feel.

  10. My question is regarding Luc. Gitara sent him to find his fortune in the Blight and he went willingly.

So I'm wondering what people take from this about his personality.  Did he willingly merge with Isam or was he forced? I would really like to have had more details in the books about those kind of details.

I'm a huge fan of the history of Rand's family and this aspect has always intrigued me.

Thanks for any insights anyone may have.

  11. Whoever killed Egwene, some major character needed to do. For 14 books, only the bad guys die, not counting Moraine. Though I'm not sure if people knew before the letter that she was coming back. Rand, Mat, Perrin, Elayne, Min, Aviendha all had get out of jail free cards. I only wish Egwene had been the G.R.R.M. moment

There were plenty of 2nd and 3rd tier characters to kill off, I dont see the need to kill off a major character at all. I only see that desire as a result

of G.R.R. Martin's books and his obsessive need to kill off anyone that people began to care about. There was no need in my opinion to follow his

    example.

  12. If I had my say Id have left the top 7 characters alive at the end of the book, I get that the need to show self-sacrifice and

that anyone can die . I blame the whole obsession with the  "realism" of major characters being killed at the feet of

G.R.R. Martin who made it fashionable to knock off major characters left and right. There were a copious number of

2nd and 3rd tier characters that you can knock off to show "realism" , which in fact Jordan/Sanderson did quite

effectively. There was no need to kill off Egwene or any of the other 7 main characters for that matter , excepting Rand of course,

but that's another whole can of worms to be discussed elsewhere in the forum. I know many people didn't like Egwene and were glad

that she was killed but having Cadsuane as the new Amyrlin !? <shivers< What about the plan of Egwene's to absorb the

massive number of potential Aes Sedai into the White Tower ? I can't imagine Cadsuane ever being willing to do such a thing

she is just too wedded to how things were handled in the past, she most definitely is NOT a visionary .  Also, Egwene had

developed into a great leader and would have led the White Tower for conceivably a looong time .Anyway , that's one of the things

id have changed in the series. Everyone's thoughts are encouraged and in fact hoped for. Let me know your thoughts on what

    i've said. Thanks.

  13.

“Perrin Aybara and Mat Cauthon,” Semirhage murmured, inspecting the two shapes. “So that is what they look like. Who knows, Moridin. If you had shared this with us before now, they might already have been dead.”

Thanks for this reference . I am re-reading TDR now and wondered why Rahvin didn't recognize Mat.
