  1. I think in regards to the casting of Lanfear we can contrast it with a potential casting of Graendal

Both are described in the books as kind of polar opposites of what traditionally humans think about beauty.

Graendal is more a Jane Russell body type while Lanfear is more Lauren Bacall.

If neither of these amazing women are familiar to you, look them up. 😄

  2. In the final analysis the tv show was really unable to improve upon the book.

People have complained for years about the "weakness" of the books ending.

And yet not even people who know the books cover to cover were able to come up with a better storyline.  I personally enjoyed Jordan's ending even if it was inconsistent. He was able to use the ending to foreshadow  a bunch of things that he could use in later books and that's cool.

The original argument was, in my understanding, that it is unrealistic that Moiraine be wrong about thinking Rand could defeat the Dark One early at the Eye of the World because she knows the Prophecies of the Dragon and the Stone of Tear and all that, and has never mentioned them.  And it they can't change the Callendor being in Tear without it being unrealistic because it's in the prophecies.  Same for 'Male+Female Dragons' in the prophecies, etc.

It was pointed out that, for the show, we do not yet know how much the Aes Sedai know about the prophecies or what the prophecies actually contain.   All we know is that the Karethon cycle exists as a book, and it has a picture of a Dragon in it.

This book could be common or it could be rare in the TV Version.  It could be well known, even to someone like Rand, or it could be very obscure. It could contain versions of the Prophecies of the Dragon that match what we know from the books, or the prophecies could be changed for the show.  The Karethon cycle could be a book of prophecies about the Dragon or a fairy tale for all we know.

It was also argued that if the prophecies were changed for the show, then the book should be called something else.  But fans (well some of us) appreciate the fan service.

Basically, it's the internet. People starting fights for the sake of starting fights.

These are the basic differences we know between the book at the show on this subject:

    1) In the Show, much information about the Dark One, including about the Dark One's prison and the Eye of the World, was purged from the Tower Libraries by Darkfriends (Episode ?

    2) In the Show, Moiraine is certain from Prophecies only /when/ the Dragon was reborn, not where or anything else about them, including whether or not they are male or female.  We do not know if this is because the prophecies (other than Gitara's foretelling) is vague on this, or Moiraine is acting with an abundance of caution in her interpretation of the prophecy, or if there are prophecies other than the ones Moiraine is familiar with.

    3) In the Show, common villagers from The Two Rivers don't really know what the Dragon is. They know there's a Dark One, and Moiraine tells them that one of them is the Dragon, who can defeat the Dark One or destroy the world, but that's really all they know.  We do not know if they are familiar with the Stone of Tear, Callendor, the Kareathon Cycle, or anything like that.  And we don't need to know...it's better for us as the audience to learn as they learn more so the show will share that with us.

    4) There is a copy of the Kareathon Cycle in the Light's Blessing in in Tar Valon with a picture of a dragon in it.  How common this book is, whether it is in other inns, how it got there, or what it contains, we don't know.

I don't think we can make any conclusions about what we don't know yet...the story had to cram a lot of information and not every piece of information needs to be provided all at once. Only pieces relevant to the story need to be provided at all, and by story, I mean the one they're telling in the show.  It will be simpler than in the books, and they'll change stuff.

I hope at some point in the tv show they have a flashback to where Gitara spoke the prophecy in front of Moiraine/Siuan . That would be very cool.

Have you thought about how badly the writers are going to have to omit from the books or outright make up more lies since they began lying from the start? ie. Perrins character? He wasn't married, didn't kill his wife, accidentally or otherwise, didn't have a beard, wasn't the village blacksmith, merely an apprentice, etc. How are they going to write Faile into future episodes? Just make up even more lies? Why base the series on the WOT at all?

Every major character has been twisted into someone else.

It's barely recognizable and the casting is way off. RJ was quite specific in describing everyone.

GOT at least stayed mostly true to the written word. This series I just see an endless series of future lies.

Perrin didn't have a beard ? Really. Your griping about that ?

    Wow.

I’m on knife of dream and going by the title I think something big could happen in the dream world

I just don’t like plots like children of the light struggling to remember Galad he just got revenge on the guy he thinks killed Morgase even though I forgot he was looking for that guy the fight they had was good

Now I’m following a General that I don’t remember lol

One of the biggest things for me is characters vanish for books and I’m like who and what are you doing in the story again Way too many characters I think

Personally, I wouldn't have minded if the Children of the Light had been wiped out by the Seanchan.

I don't see them or Galad as important enough to make even a minor storyline around.

They had already served their purpose already in helping to form Perrin's character and aren't necessary afterwards.

Some no-name website that floods you with pop up advertising cites an "insider", makes up a quote, and the rest of the article is filled with generic Wheel of Time TV show info. Get all the clicks from WoT fans curious about what happened, small enough not to get on any radar to suffer legal pushback. Job done.

Before I get into anything, personally I think the Dragon's Peace was Sanderson's lamest excuse and nearly ruined the series.

Yes, Ghealdan is a bit isolated. It was a weak nation and will stay as a weak nation with powerful allies. With their own treaty, if Seanchan attack Ghealdan, Two Rivers, Andor, Cairhien, Saldaea, and Mayene must help. These nations can call upon Aiel as well.

In a fantasy world like WoT, we just need to make believe that the Dragon's Peace will be enforced by the Aiel. Whether Aiel will actually fight Seanchan is debatable, but they have given their word, so we need to. In the Dragon's Peace, all nations agreed to give aid if Aiel ask for it. This wasn't there in Aviendha's vision.. only Andor gave aid and reluctantly.

We can deduce from few inferences that the main reason that Aiel lost to Seanchan because there was no directions. After the Last Battle, clans went their own ways since Rand is dead and Aiel had no clear directions and purposes. Most likely, Aiel warriors continue to suffer bleakness... and raided each others again. It was just Taardad who fought at the start in Aviendha's vision, so one by one, Aiel clans got swallowed up by Seanchan.

Considering that Nakomi was present with Aviendha and Rand, we need to assume that the author wanted readers know that Aviendha's vision changed. With Aiel clans acting as a cohesive nations, they are no pushovers. Each Aiel Clan has like 500+ channelers.

If you look at the map, there are many unsettled land. Most likely most Aiel will have moved to the Westland since they are part of the Westland now. I am sure that Ghealdan is safe if Seanchan invades.

Your post makes me curious. What are your reasons for not liking Dragon's Peace. I've not heard anyone else bring this aspect of the books up. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, if your willing

  8. A question I've always had about the ending to Memory of Light. The world is still complicated and messy even after the LB and there are all kind of issues left over that the world needs to handle.

Do we really think that Rand wouldn't try to help?

Personally, I think Rand whether in his original body or in Moridins would indeed involve himself in the issues of the Fourth Age in some form or another. I mean he would be alive for decades after the LB.

I can't see him just standing by and raising sheep. He would try and help and that opens up all kinds of thoughts in my head canon lol.

  9. The ending of The Eye of the World in the books is widely considered weak and the show attempted to do the ending better. Beyond whether or not you believe the ending in both book and tv show is good or bad.

My question is how would YOU have changed the ending to the book if you were the writing it?

I don't see that this question has been discussed. If I'm in error please let direct me to the correct thread.

Except, like, they have a whole animated  addon feature just explaining this specific thing in detail in pure exposition. Just because it hasn't been fully expressed in the show yet to your satisfaction doesn't mean it's not there.

the point of those additional featurettes is because Rafe and company have been  unable to get Amazon to pony up more money and episodes to explain the system fully which is really sad.

Unrelated question:  Do folks think that the Sea Folk will be in the show ?

Yeah the scope thing was weird - this was pre-covid too I think. Like the introduction to episode 4 in Ghealdan looked cool in terms of the set and enviroment....but all you see is 3 dudes running away in a besieged castle. Even just like 20 extras would have done a lot with clever filming.

I thought they had completed filming before the covid shutdowns. I think I've blocked 2020 out of my mind

Team Aviendha here. I think she's the most interesting partner for Rand by quite a margin. Perhaps the most interesting character in the entire series. She's our window into the most interesting culture, goes through a lot of growth and is generally a good but weird person who keeps us guessing a lot of the time.

Min is cute, but doesn't grow very much during the series. Elayne does grow a lot, but she can be annoying at times, and her misunderstanding Rand at every turn makes her the worst match for him.

But anyway, we shouldn't be reading WoT for the romance. Jordan did a fantastic job at most of the story, but that particular part clearly wasn't his forte. ?

Hopefully the writers on the TV show do a better job with Rand and the ladies. In fact, I expect them to change the dynamics up quite a bit. They'll keep the poly aspect because that's vogue these days. They might just change other things too...I've read people who are rooting for Avienda to be bisexual. It's possible.

  13. The scope of the battle against Logain's army concerns me some. There are huge battles later on in the books at least and I worry that they won't be able to show the scope and detail the battles sufficiently. The AS go to capture Logain with 9 sisters and about 10 Warders max and no real regular soldiers which is odd considering your potentially going to have to fight a battle.

I hope Amazon steps up and as the seasons progress  and

gives larger budgets and even increase the number of eps.

The wolf eating her in the dream is what really sold me on Laila being a dark friend.

What episode was that dream in ?

I ask because if it was in a episode BEFORE Rafe explicitly denied that Laila was a DF then it could be that

the plan WAS to make her a Darkfriend but the huge outcry over the "fridging"  thing,

made him have to he  backtrack that idea to appease the viewers.

i so appreciate everybody who put energy into this thread.  Having come back to it after being away and pickling in my own disappointment about the season I mostly stand by my previous post.  However here is my mashup of the most likely scenarios from everybody else.  Ignoring all the specious, humorous. sarcastic, etc takes gets me to this summary of our progress (not consensus) to date:

The season will likely be a mashup of TGH and TDR.

The super girls will spend time in TV training and meet Elayne, and Gawayn. Egwene will fall for Gawayn and start her career as a dreamer.   Matt will get captured by the Aes Sedai.  Liandrin will winkle them out of the tower per the books and they will  rescue and take Matt with them.  They will go to Tear which is under siege by the Seanchan.  The Stone stands.  Egw is captured per the books.

Perrin, resurrected Loial and Ingtar, and the Sniffer Elyas chase after Fain.  Perrin realizes that the only way to save himself is to embrace the way of the leaf.  Elyas recognizes a wolf brother and tries to convert him to the way of the wolf.  This continues the whole season.

Moraine will struggle with the loss of the source and seek out Verin.  Lan will saddle the horses  and do all the camp chores as befits a male warrior.   Verin will give Moraine the clues she needs to untie the shield.   She will also heal Lan who badly wounds himself when cutting firewood with his sword.

Rand will wander the blight learning the sword by killing shadow spawn. Eventually he meets Selene who Travels with him to Tear to take Callandor.  No portal stones or worlds of if.

The last episode has the white cloaks charging the Seanchan, Matt blowing the horn and the hero's throwing back the Seanchan.  Meanwhile Rand,  Perrin et al, sneak into the Stone and grab the sword. There is a Shadow spawn attack which Rand defeats per the book.  Per the books we see the forsaken working at cross purposes.   It may be that E7 is the repelling of the Seanchan and E8 is the taking of the Stone if they want two action episodes back to back..  There is no Turak but Rand does stab Ishy

BTW there will be little of the punishments of novices in the tower.  We all know that corporal punishment is not an effective way to modify behavior.  Novices who misbehave are told to stand in the corner, are grounded in their room, or sent to their room without supper.  If they are really to be punished then it is all three.    This is where Rafes enlightened view of the world will really make the story realistic.

Love your humorous take on Lan and Tar Valon's behavior modification practices.  Personally I will miss the spankings ?

As for Lan,  I truly hope Lan gets to kick butt throughout the season not just here and there.
