Original sin has been the justification for misogyny in Western civilization for centuries. Even if we don’t explicitly talk about it anymore doesn’t mean the idea has gone away. Original sin is an incredibly powerful and ancient concept. Many High Fantasy stories are (intentionally or not) retellings of Paradise Lost. I’m certain it’s intentional in Jordan’s case.

^But it is not for "honorable reasons". He stole because he needed to recoup his losses from gambling. That is the exact opposite of honorable.

He was gambling to try to get enough money to buy his sisters lanterns and other Bel Tine treats. He’s robbing the corpse to get money to get back to his family with a safer, faster route than wandering through the woods. Robbing a corpse might not be something he’d consider before picking up the dagger, but he’s still justifying it to himself as being for the benefit of his sisters. This is all consistent with being Chaotic Good.

I didn't read GOT books, but mean too.  So IDK how far the TV series deviates but so far I would have to say GOT is better.

I'm not sure why so many are happy about how far it deviates from the books?  Strange to me.

Its not so much that I’m happy about the changes, but more like I understand they are going to make changes and so I’m trying to be open minded about them instead of reflexively rejecting them as “wrong”. It’s not like Rafe Judkins broke into my house and ripped all the pages out of my books. I can always go back to them if I prefer that version of the story.

On a slightly different but associated topic.

I watched this Friday with a good friend who had never read the books. He's a great guy. After the first episode, I asked him what he thought.

He said, "I thought it was really good, but I felt a little uncomfortable with how everyone thinks the world being broken is all men's fault, and how men were unclean and corrupting in some way."

His wife and I both looked at him  and said, without even thinking about it, at the same time, "Welcome to our world."

He blinked for about 2 seconds, and said, "You know...you may have a point there."

In the world of the Wheel of Time original sin is attributed to men, not women.

Exactly, how can they deviate that far from what is in Jordan's world?  Maybe having white cloaks executing one by chance, but a collection of rings?

The books tell a great story, all you gotta do is not EFF It up.

Honestly, I kinda love Valda keeping trophies from all the Aes Sedai he’s executed. I know it doesn’t match the lore from the books, but it really makes the Whitecloaks a much more terrifying antagonist. I’m interested to see how this plays out.

I guess it's some piece of clothing that offers extra protection from the cold/rain even though she wouldn't need one.

Aes Sedai still experience things like frostbite, heat stroke, etc. They have learned to ignore the effects of extreme temperatures, but the laws of physics still apply. Lan is always checking to make sure Moiraine is appropriately dressed for the weather even if she’s not paying attention. There’s a bit when they go to the Waste with Rand and Lan immediately starts taking steps to ensure Moiraine doesn’t get heat stroke.

  7. On the subject of baths, I definitely appreciate Moiraine and Lan in the bath tub together as the show announcing loudly “this isn’t GOT!” On GOT any two people sitting in a hot tub together would absolutely lead to sexy times, ESPECIALLY if anyone was saying “ooooh. Let’s heat this up”. On WOT she just heats up the water and they talk business.

  8. Like I said, I might be reading things that aren’t there. But several times they’ve shown that Rand likes to get up high or climb a mountain when he’s trying to work through negative emotions. And when Moiraine tells the story of Manetheren, you get a reaction shot of Egwene when Eldrene draws too much of the power. Rafe knows the complete story and knows what elements he wants to include in later seasons. There’s no reason not to do foreshadowing now, especially since a good chunk of TEOTW is foreshadowing later books. Min’s visions in Baerlon are basically a Cliff Notes version of the next 13 books.

And there is the question of why the Trolloc's blood made a fang-shape in the water in the first place? Was it because the Dark One's evil influence just makes things look like fang-shapes sometimes, when his dark minions are involved? Or was it just because of, ya know, symbolism is cool? Except, is it? Seems like hokey fan-service to me, unless there is a deeper, in-world explanation forthcoming.

Maybe I’m reading too deep, but I saw some powerful symbolism in this scene. The river clearly represents saidar. Eg has to surrender to the current to keep from drowning. I would not be surprised if the spring feeds into the river. Nynaeve keeps the pool clean, as part of her duties as Wisdom, foreshadowing when she helps Rand cleanse the taint later. The trolloc pollutes the pool and Nynaeve kills it, further symbolizing her role later in the books.

  10. I do not disagree. It’s very silly that the writers decided the best way to amp up Perrin’s manpain was to give him a wife that barely speaks to him before he accidentally cleaves her in half. At least give her some dialogue and personality.

But we already have several versions of this conversation going in other threads, so I’m going to direct you to continue this there. Thanks!
