A Memory of Light Cover Art

Jason Denzel

Tor Books has revealed the official cover art for A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and final Wheel of Time novel.

Click the image shown here for a larger version, or click here for the full resolution version where you can see Rand in all his 300 dpi glory.

The artwork is by renowned artist Michael Whelan. Mr. Whelan was commissioned to do this cover after Darrell K. Sweet passed away. He will be the Guest of Honor at next year's JordanCon V convention.

So, what do you think of the cover? Rand looks pretty awesome, huh? Tell us what you think in the comments below!

A Memory of Light will be released in hardcover and audiobook on January 8, 2013. The eBook will be released a few weeks after that.

theoryland, confirmed by Whelan.

A good read, but this is not hard enough evidence for me. This is one anonomous person saying they know Whelan, and that he said this and that. I didn't read Whelan say anything about who was in the picture.

Great painting; makes for one of the best-looking of the non-E-book covers. It has the same feel as the Sweet covers -- but the artwork is so much better, and it's probably a lot more accurate, too. I prefer this scene to the one Sweet was working on when he passed away.

I've been impatiently waiting to finish this series since starting it in college back in 1991. I was on the old rasfwrj newsgroup back in its heyday, I've been to six or seven RJ signings and had a few of his answers to my questions in the old FAQ, and briefly corresponded (by letter) with RJ in '94 (when he said some of my questions would be answered in what later became the Big White Book of Bad Art). After 21 years of waiting (so far), it just brings a smile to my face seeing the words "final volume" on this cover.

Most probably it is Moiraine and Nynaeve ( as it is clearly depicted through the jewel and by the red dot on the forehead).

I wonder on the women being present in the scene, as to the purpose of them. do they form the circle with the callandor in rand's hand?

Read again: Whelan responds as well.

Where do you people keep seeing "the jewel and red dot on the forehead"? I have perfect vision, and I keep looking and I don't see anything. There maybe something there, but you cannot for sure, without a doubt say that that is what is on the cover. It just isn't clear enough to say for sure.

Maybe you could point out what your talking about. Because I read it for the third time, and the Mr.Jackson (mister anonomous) clearly states that Whelan isn't allowed to talk about the script to AMOL. The only talk about who is on the cover comes from Mr.Jackson. Sorry this isn't enough evidence. Maybe you could show me the part where Whelan says without a doubt that it is Moiraine and Nyn.

Sorry Damer to be rude but if you pull up the image cover, you can zoom in and see the jewel.

Sorry for not being more detailed with my post. The fact that Moiraine is one of the two woman on the cover is not in question here. I know that she will be there. So, for me arguing about whether you can see the jewel on her forehead in the picture is pointless, because we know it is her. What I was really getting at, is that the other woman is in fact in question. We have no ideal who she is, and if there is something on HER forehead in the pic, it is not clear enough to tell what it is, if in fact it is anything.

Choice!! This would have to be the best cover I have yet seen for the WOT series. Finally, a decent representation and teaser for a seminal scene. Eagerly anticipating the final and concluding book.

I'll be happy to get the book but sad that it's the last. I don't know what we'll do after.

What if it is ment to combine all 3 powers? I am fairly certin that durring onee of LTT's rambalings he said the male half was tainted b/c it touched the DO. And that it couldn't be any other way b/c something had to touch him in order to seal his prison. So what if Rand joins the circle with Callandor and it alowes him to ue both the male half and the TP at the same time? The TP touches the DO and the OP seals it all up. Just a thought.

I think this time will be different: Rand is not going te re-seal the Bore, but is going to heal the Bore, so that the Pattern is once again what will be imprisoning the Dark One and not saidin and/or saidar.

That is exactly my thought as well, it fits with how RJ has placed Nynaeve in the storyline and with the principle of the wheel turning over and over.

The sealing of the Bore was always an imperfect solution, Rand (and, I believe, Nynaeve) will be "healing" the damage the making of the Bore made to the pattern, ensuring that the Bore has to be made all over again when the wheel turns again, not simply the DO breaking down the seal over time.

an interesting cover. Better than TGS, maybe not as good as ToM.

Qujick glance at the HD version - looks like Rand has some blood spots on his left side? is that where the wound(s) that never heal are?

One thing that was pointed out over the years was that DKS always painted these his own way. It doesn't sound like their was much collaboration between him and RJ. I think here Whelan has paid more attention to the actually backstory. Rand looks more Rand-ish, Callandor looks much more like it is described in the books than on the cover of TDR. Looks like some of the covers to the Coldfire books - which I think Whelan did as well?

I guess it's suitably iconic for the series swansong. Looking forward to the read.

This may seem like a strange question, but what is that symbol underneath "The woman in blue"? It's on the darker rock just before it goes orangey above a little point. If you go to TOR's website you can get some higher resolution images so everything is bigger and more clear and you can see it's a small white circle with a symbol in the middle of it. I thought it might be the artists watermark or something but then why hide it? I don't know there's bound to be someone on here who can answer my question, because now i can't look at the image without seeing that little symbol. Cheers guys.

left leg,it looks like a head on a pile of rocks, padan fain head maybe????

Just so people know it really is Moiraine, Nynaeve

http://www.tor.com/b...-light-revealed

look at the pictures, and read it again... the woman in blue is clearly moraine... the woman in yellow/green is... assumed to be nynaeve... but that has not been confirmed...

and there are many other errors in the picture asis...

id love for a confirmation on who she is... but there hasnt been one yet...

So glad to see a great cover - finally! I was never a fan of Darrell K. Sweet's work. His humans almost always looked just plain wrong - disproportionate, oddly posed, and generally drawn badly. I've never understood how a commercial artist could have such a long, successful career without being able to draw humans. He produced some beautiful backgrounds, his composition was generally good, and he had some truly awesome concepts, but he drew really, really crappy people. Not only was his perspective weird, but his proportions were just flat wrong, and he had real trouble drawing hands.

What's with all the women with vapid looks on their faces fluttering their weirdly tiny hands about, and why is most everyone standing or sitting in strained, unnatural poses? Why does Rand look like a completely different person nearly every time he appears - and not in a way consistent with the story, but as though one model was switched out for another? In the two where he actually looks like the same person, he resembles the late character actor J.T. Walsh, which I can't imagine is the way anyone envisions Rand.

And, of course, there's always Perrin as Gimli the Dwarf (WH and KoD) and pissy-powerwalker Rand (CoS), along with Mat as an Indian brave in a Zorro hat. The worst, I think, was the cover of LoC, which was simply god-awful in every possible way.

I wish Michael Whelan had been the artist for all the covers.

Oh, and, yes, that is Nynaeve there in the yellow and green.
