I had a lot of fun playing with you guys and I hope to do it again...following my next haitus. (Have some choice words for Darthe and his impact on other town players, but I'm guessing they'll fall on deaf ears, so I'll save them.)

Don't assume that you know me from one rough game please.
Did you want to hear the choice words? ;)

Sure! Good for learning

Okay. I think you basically did mafia's job for them this game by attacking and demoralizing your own team mates. Especially Celeste - because after you detemined that she was likely town, the way you derided her repeatedly basically made her even easier pickings than she already was. You knew she was already reacting emotionally, but instead of supporting her and encouraging her to do better or focusing the attention elsewhere so it wasn't just an ongoing "Let's Pick on Celeste-Fest" you furthered it and all mafia had to do was enjoy the fruits of your labour at that point.

Did Celeste have personal responsibility there? Sure. So did Alanna. As do any of us as individual players. But mafia is a team sport (unless you've got some kind of 3P/SK wincon). If you want to win games you have to deal with the fact that some of your team mates will need more support to get to their better game than others. If all you're interested in is feeling superior, then the way you played is totally okay.

I think that if you had handled things with Celeste the way that Calder did, town's game at the very least wouldn't have devolved to quite the level that it did.

I'm not saying I'm blameless here. There are some things I wish I'd have handled better on D1 with Celeste than I did. I'll try to carry that forward to the next game we play together. But you seriously made me wish I had made the decision to protect myself rather than you after I saw what happened on D2.

That being said -obviously I chose to protect you because I saw you as being a likely target because you had value to town. I just wish you had taken that cache and used it in a more productive way.

/end of lecture.

Agreed on every level. One of the big things we've been discussing in the various worldwide Mafia chats is thread environment and how toxic thread environments are not only bad for the game because they chase away players, but also are massively pro-wolf. It's intensely easy to wolf when the opposing team can't develop any sort of interest in the game because it's too emotionally thick, something that is exacerbated with high volume.

I said something recently about this a couple months ago that's a good indicator of my feelings on the matter but I don't remember what board it on, if it was private or in Skype or anything lol. FFS

From some PMs:

Like best ----> worst IMO:

Higher volume + good thread environment = enjoyable games that are harder to wolf in
Lower volume + good thread environment =  enjoyable games that are easier to wolf in
Lower volume + bad thread environment = unenjoyable games, easy for wolves, forgettable
Higher volume + bad thread environment = unmitigated disasters that cripple the game for everyone

As DM has developed into a more competitive mafia forum, keeping in mind things like thread environment are extremely important due to the above. Not that they weren't always important, but the "unmitigated disasters" not only damage the village in-game, but also damage the game itself.

To be fair, it's hard to foster a "good thread environment" with people who are super touchy and blow a gasket from every little thing. Or people that hold the game hostage. Throwing that out there from my experience in some other games.

I WILL DEPORT YOU OUT OF CANADA EH!!!!!!

My problem with toxic thread environments is that it exacerbates whatever anxiety I might already have and then it just feeds back and forth. I get worse mentally and then my presence in thread gets worse and it just spirals down. I was holding up pretty good d1 even though I was really behind and had intentions to catch up and do good by the thread. But then the week kicked in and I had some personal things going on... thread environment became toxic, I became toxic, and said some things I shouldn't have (sorry, I have no right to be a jerk either). Basically resulted in me barely comprehending any of the thread that I read, making the wrong choice on my shot. Once I screwed up my shot (50/50 Z or Liz), I was full of self loathing and getting into it more with Darthe and it just became a nasty mess and I doomed myself and the town. Sometimes it's really hard to keep your personal life and the game separate when the game is supposed to be a distraction from whatever is going on in RL that is stressing me, but when it becomes a chore and a hassle just to show up, I lose WiM, I make mistakes, and I myself become toxic. So, I am sorry to everyone I hurt/offended this game and I hope that in the future I can have a better attitude in thread and not get so worked up.

Nyn, some people are going to be more sensitive than others, that's just something we have to take in with the game. It really just comes down to working well with others and actively trying to foster a good thread environment that people WANT to be a part of.

I think it's from both sides

Thicker skin is always an asset

But it's also not hard to just be civil. It's a text-based voting and yelling game on the internet, ffs. You don't need to take it to a personal level with other people.

It's not really a question of taking personal shots, though. That's obviously not cool. But quite a few players either get their panties in a twist over game related interrogation and playstyle forcefulness.... or prefer to play as a single unit and suck balls at being a team player, wanting to twist everyone's hand to see the game the way they do, thereby devolving the game. I'm just saying.... that also contributes to the overall atmosphere. Not just personal attacks.

Zander adults are talking

You have hurt my feeling and this is a toxic environment.

And yes I only have 1 feeling.

I have all the faith in the world that Darthe can and will adjust, because I also remember how werewolf/mafia was played "competitively" only a year or two ago and it takes a lot to not default to that when you've done it for so long

And this is ultimately about COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY, which is a part of the game whether or not we want to act like this a personality conflict.

It's not like we've never seen players like Celeste at DragonMount before. That part is nothing new.

I tend to treat people differently. A more "sensitive" player I might not go as hard on as, say, Zander. I know Zander can take MY pushes and I'm never going to go overboard with him. Someone like, say Celeste or Monstr, though, become very emotionally invested in the game and might react differently to the same push I would do with Zander. So I adapt and find new ways to Interact with them that's not going to hurt anyone and allows us to communicate.

There's some people I'm flat out rude to because they make me reactive by how they treat me. I guess I can be considered sensitive in that regard. If I'm called useless or worthless or stupid, I'm going to flip out and be very upset because I struggle with those things in RL, I don't need someone in the game saying the same thing, even if they don't mean it or only mean it in a game sense.

Hopefully that makes sense?

I agree with the bolded. After we got in the discussion about me only I was trying to get us out of that but people didn't want to move on.
