Fredegar would never forget the way her eyes looked. He always said, years later, that he wouldn't have been there himself had it not been for his four friends rousing the hobbits to battle that day. Sam and Merry, Frodo and Pippin. He just wanted to help and had no idea she had followed him onto the battlefield. Every year on the eve of her death Fatty would have a strong drink and think of his sister, a fallen hero of the Battle of Bywater.

As for the third party thing I tried to explain it a bit more earlier, but from the source material it makes sense in my mind that Grima could potentially have an alternate win scenario, maybe even a back-up godfather role or something similar.
