I'm going to be my kids college. I'll just sit then down in front of me and stare into the dark recesses of their soul for a proper amount of time for them to realize how screwed this planet is, then tell em to slap on a winning smile and "network" their way into job opportunities and kick them out on their behinds.

Also, it's a joke that we have to freaking go broke and into crap piles of debt putting ourselves through secondary school. Free universal secondary education for all imo.

In all seriousness, I'm thoroughly opposed to free higher education for everybody.  I think that would be a terrible decision which would lead to the downfall of our society.

......... okay

You must be right, since it has been so disastrous for all other countries who give their citizens access to secondary education

'Muricans need to get over their love affair with capitalism imo. Moderation is the key to life, and capitalism has been hell bent on splurging to excessive degrees now for far too long in this country. As it is, it's more of a corporatocracy than anything else. Friggin Walmart and such, running things and then outsourcing to other countries while fooling 'muricans into thinking letting business operate without regulation is patriotic or some crap. Blech.

No no no.  This thread is a celebration of awesome.  Let's get back to talking about Despo having a son!

You'll never get me to talk about anything political online.  But if you two really want to discuss it, you both should really check out the latest Harvard Business Review as it had a very interesting analysis regarding corporate tax structure, stock buybacks, and what the government funds.

Cause yeah, I don't like Des. In case you'all weren't aware. I needed to get a memo too to find out. Glad I did, otherwise, boy... would my face be red.

It would have been disastrous if they had instituted it after the precedent of people paying thousands and thousands of dollars for their education had already been established.  If we could go back, say, a hundred years and change it - that'd be great.  But our time machine is broken.

I'm also concerned that being handed it without putting some sort of responsibility on the individual would take away from our competitive nature.  I would venture to assume that MOST who have to work hard and earn their way through school are more likely to appreciate the opportunity - and in turn, make the most of it - than those who are handed it for nothing.

Then why not just "wean" people off of it? Slowly subsidize schools more and more and lighten the load on the populace, and at the same time increase government ownership of the schools in the process (or leave them privatized but increase regulations so they don't charge a small fortune for a tiny piece of paper). First argument is weak.

Second argument sounds a lot like that that big businesses use, falling back on Adam Smith's "invisible hand" to justify letting the greedy get away with being as greedy as possible. A competitive nature is fine for stuff like professional sports, but when it comes to a nation's well being it's absolutely ridiculous to suggest that it betters the situation. When left unchecked, individuals will GLADLY take advantage of others to further their own goals. When it comes to furthering the interests of a larger community however, elements like teamwork and cooperation are a must. So no, I don't think that making people go into debt for their entire lives to earn a piece of paper that doesn't even guarantee them a good career helps them "appreciate it" more. And studies and reality back this up.

Yay, Happy Birthday!

DT, men who are good cooks are always appreciated :). I'm teaching my little man early. He already 'helps' me make dinner and bake cookies, etc.
