The problem with that rule is that everyone has their own interpretation on what constitutes as impairing someone else's ability to view the game thread. If I for example believe that Salami spamming up the game thread is impairing my ability to follow along should I then bring it up to you? Who decides when the thread becomes "unreadable" and where do you draw the line? Have you taken into account that some players are more easily distracted from spam than others? How do you prevent people from abusing this rule for gameplay or personal reasons?

In short I believe that we should make up as few rules as we can for mafia games because A) they are unneeded, and B) they only impose needless restrictions on players and nobody likes that.

there's a difference between your ability or desire to follow along and your computer or phone freezing.

like there are limits on the size of sigs.

it's safe to assume any gif is going to slow down or crash someone with older or slower equipment no I didn't mean it to sound that way.

yeah the are things than can be very annoying to read or scroll through and the fact that people glaze over and don't pay attention to what you say may or may not limit you there.

but it's really not so cool to post things that fiat out make it impossible for someone to load the page.

and... no one is suggesting this be a DM mafia rule.

*cough cough* Putting your comments in a different color within the quote *cough cough*

All right... how about:

Do not engage in actions which would impair the ability of others to load the game thread.

(Note the small but distinct change.) I just want to avoid the same situation from occurring again, and give my players a more enjoyable game experience in the process. If people can't load the thread, they are literally unable to play.

Dear fellow maffia playerz.

Memes are fun.

GIFs are le sux but I understand alot of players do enjoy them.

However. Unfortunately, most of them are just not optimized for size at all. I saw several of them with size over 3 megabytes.

Not sure about you guys. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem for several of you, but in Hungary, we got a guaranteed net speed of a couple of megabits only on our 3G. It's usually much slower, actually, not to mention the fact that data plans that give you GB-range monthly net quota are expensive.

Before this whole GIF and meme period came, I had no trouble playing at all from my phone, but since that happened, I had to buy an exra 1GB of 3G and even that doesn't help when you get several GIF's on page cause the pages just take seconds to minutes to load if they ever do.

TL;DR

Please spoiler your GIFs. They hurt the mobile users.

Yeah this is why I had to bail on the Star Wars game, despite what some very rude people seemed to think.

I use a laptop which is 9 years old and was not very powerful to begin with.

It just can't handle gif spam. Like two or three is ok but when you get to the point where it's like every other post or more my computer starts freezing up and it takes several minutes to load a page where normally it takes seconds.

I don't think it's right to tell people not to post gifs though.

It's not their fault I have an old laptop or some people play from phones.

If they value our participation I guess they can use spoilers or just cut back.

But personally I am not asking or expecting it from anyone.

I don't think it would need to be a rule, just ask people to spoiler tag gifs.

I'm in complete agreement with Verbal. If anything like that became a problem, the mod could address it and that would be that. Asking to spoiler gifs is a reasonable request, but in games where there aren't many people posting them then an unspoilered gif here or there isn't a big deal imo.

I think the quoting someone and responding within their quote is a heck of a lot worse personally. Devices that are slower or have a slow internet connection can usually be set to not display images or anything over a certain size. I know someone who wanted to get rotating siggies banned sitewide instead of changing their own settings to prevent their device from loading pages too slowly. Just seems silly to me to limit everyone else because of a small minority of people that are on slower connections or devices or something.

Especially when a few people start it and then it's multicolored and you have no clue who was responding.

again, no one is suggesting a site wide rule or a ban on gifs.

I'm a little puzzled that a single rule about courtesy that one mod might try in his games (and yeah it would be asking for spoiler tags on moving images and ... so?) would get anyone upset,

the classic rule 14 was the standard here for years, know what I mean? and people put in rules asking others to play nice, or to not take things personally, or to use hashtags instead of color or bold for voting or to unvote or not, or to wear or not wear pants, or to do or don't do any particular and often peculiar thing a mod wants to try.

if it's not in CoC violation I don't understand why anyone except those affected by the problem and those who are ... I don't even know what.... mildly inconvenienced at using a spoiler tag to show a little respect and understanding that not everyone has the same fancy toys that you do... even care.

it's like the happy fun ball thing.

if you're not that away inclined, you just gloss over the rule. or if you don't want to gfy you ignore the old 14.

if you don't use gifs (and that's a very new little trend which amused me too until I tried to load the game at work and then I suddenly "got" it, and I think we've seen how trends can whoosh through the site and become the norm #ohyeahyouhave) then let your eyes glaze over. if you do remember in this or that game you're asked to use courtesy tags.

problem solved.

and hell yeah it was a problem and hell no it didn't wait for the mods to wake up to become one.

*shudders* Those are the worst. When someone starts puking rainbows over the thread I quite frankly stop reading what they are saying.

Yeah can't you guys just disable images on your phones? Problem solved.

I don't have a problem whatsoever with a mod choosing to put a specific rule into one of their games.

This thread wasn't meant for one game tho. It was def implied that it was a desired site-wide effect.

And the game you're referring to, the player should have either let everyone know his comp was having difficulty loading the gifs or spoken to the mods first. Subbing out immediately was a poor choice.

In general people subbing out way too quickly for sometimes dubious reasons is one of my biggest pet peeves in mafia. It's a complete disservice to the mods and all the rest of the players. Yet some here are all too quick to pull that "Replace me!" trigger.

The worst is when someone acts like they're taking the high road or doing something noble when they sub out at the first sign of distress instead of resolving the issue out of thread like most people do. That just makes my blood boil.

This is how I see you in mafia games :P

Point being: it's still a game at the end of the day. There's very few situations involving in-game drama that don't have the potential to be resolved in a better manner than "I'm taking my ball and going home"

Pretty much me in a nutshell lol. Quick to anger, quick to forgive. Like an emotionally unstable Teddy Ruxpin.

re "you guys" disabling images on your phones - a good portion of play seems to be in memes or spidey pics or whatever with text in them and most non animated images load with no problem for anyone, it's a bit self centered and dismissive to tell people to just turn off all the images.

it just seems that you haven't had to try playing with less than high end toys and can't imagine that if it isn't a problem for you it might be a big deal to someone else, so let them just deal.

and say a mods looking at the game from mobile with the images turned off and y'all decide to have a boobie fest and everyone just gets banned cause you didn't see the need to not boobify. that'd be a good thing?

yeah, no, ppl shouldn't have to turn off all images cause you don't want to post
