Black Ajah warders

The below is a spoiler for anyone who has only read up to book 9, Winder's Heart. Short answer: Yes, some Black Ajah Sisters have Warders.

Yes, many of them have warders.  The problem is that many Black sisters we see early on are Red, who have no Warder.  But when the Great Purge takes place, they have to detain a large number of Warders to both prevent Warders who walk in the light from going into the Killing Rage, but also to attempt to winnow out the Darkfriends among them.

As to the question about Warder's turning Darkfriend when the Aes Sedai is turned, I don't think so.  Without going into details, later we see Black Sisters with Warders who are not Darfriends, but will still commit evil acts on the behalf of the Sister and not care if she is Black.  The Bond is a strong one, and it takes a lot to cause a Warder to turn on his Aes Sedai.  Other Black Sisters have to step carefully around their Warders, however.

Ah ok, I was just thinking about it the other day. If an Aes Sedai turned to the shadow would her warder(s)turn with her because of the bond? Would a warder every try to kill his own Aes Sedai?

No to automatically turning; Yes to being willing to kill his own Aes Sedai.

In one of the later books, one of the Black Ajah who has stopped masking her bond with her Warder muses that Kennet, her Warder, is tracking her down to kill her, regardless of the cost to himself.

Interesting quote:

Interview: Nov 21st, 1998

TPOD Signing Report - John Novak (Paraphrased)

Robert Jordan

If an Aes Sedai becomes Black Ajah, the Warder would know instantly that something was up, but wouldn't know exactly what. The Black Ajah has three choices, then—hope the Warder is a Darkfriend or amenable to being one, hide the affiliation, or arrange for an accident. Yes, this would be painful for the Aes Sedai, but it might become necessary. The process of becoming Black Ajah is evidently quite painful in its own right and thus probably involves more than just swearing new Oaths on the Rod.

Normally, few would expect an Aes Sedai to be tempted by the Dark Lord. If an Aes Sedai could be manipulated, why not a warder?

Aes Sedai are far from perfect; there were more than a few AS who started out as darkfriends long before coming to the tower, its possible that several novices and accepted are DF's and on the way to becoming BA

What I was trying to say was that I thought it could be more likely for a warder to be a darkfriend than an Aes Sedai.

Thinking back to the ending of New Spring, Moiraine liked Ryne well enough and he could have possibly been made her warder and he turned out to be a darkfriend.
