Maybe I'm a little late in the game here - rand getting ripped

If Rand died and the Dragon got ripped out of TAR he wouldn't be Rand. He would be the entirety of his lives. Just like Birgitte was. The core would be the same, but his memories as Rand would be just as important and just as big a part of him as the memories of every Dragon incarnation ever. His character would change significantly.

As for how he would look who knows. The Dragon isn't set in his looks like Birgitte with her braid or Gaidal being a short ugly man. The only things Rand and LTT have in common is that they are both tall men.

Yes...thats the point I was so uneloquently trying to express. Why would Elayne want a guy that may or may not look like Rand, but also with all the Dragon memories. Its not the "same" guy.

As I said the core of him would be the same and the Dragon would still love Avi, Elayne and Min, just like he would love the countless other women he loved in his previous lives. I think she would probably accept it no matter how many details changed.

Interesting - bodies are mutable in TAR.

The HotH can presumably look like whatever they choose and most pick their last appearance,

If the LTT memories are dominant, and the soul is ripped out, it might look like LTT

Conversely if the RaT memories are dominant, it may look like RaT.

Since I see a number of contrary statements I want to repeat that we do know what Rand will look like in TAR when he dies. He'll look like Rand. We knows this because Hawkwing looks in TAR exactly as he did in his last real life.

Here he is in TGH when called by the Horn:

He knew the man who rode at their head, too. Tall and hook-nosed, with dark, deep-set eyes, his great sword Justice at his side. Artur Hawkwing.

--TGH, ch 47

And here he is as remembered by Mat from real life

Mat’s smile felt frozen. Light, what did she know? How could she know anything? He lay beneath the burning sun, holding his side with both hands, trying to keep the last of life from leaking out and wondering whether there was any reason to hold on. Aideshar was finished, after this day’s work. A shadow blotted the sun for an instant, and then a tall man in armor crouched beside him, helmet tucked under his arm, dark deep-set eyes framing a hooked nose. “You fought well against me today, Culain, and many days past,” that memorable voice said. “Will you live with me in peace?” With his last breath, he laughed in Artur Hawkwing’s face.

--CoT, ch 3

If he looks like his last incarnation in TAR it's reasonable to assume that his TAR personality is also that of the last incarnation. It would be very strange if this was split, especially since in TAR people look like what they feel like by default. So if Hawkwing looks in TAR as he did in his last real life his personality should be the same too.

There is some further confirmation of that from Birgitte. She gradually forgets her past lives after she is ripped from TAR and only remember a handful of her latest lives now. However, her personality remains the same all the time after she is ripped.

  • 4 weeks later...

I was thinking about this today. Here are my thoughts:

-Maybe the way you appear in Tel is how you see yourself. Maybe of all of Birgitte's lives, the one where she was name Birgitte was the one she identified with the most.

I'm hoping this will happen:

-Ny goes to Rand in Tel.

-Rand decides he doesn't want to be recognizable to anyone and takes on a new form (a farmer? maybe someone from a more ancient life?)

-Rand shifts into the new form.

-Ny rips him out in his new form.

-No one recognizes him and he goes off to fight the dark one. (wonder if the dark one would recognize him?)

-He wins and then disappears into the world to become a farmer that no one knows about.

I like that ending! :)

As Sharaman mentioned, appearance is "A Matter of Thought" in Tel'aran'rhiod. (There's a chapter by that name, and it's about the power of the mind in Tel'aran'rhiod.) And while Birgitte remembered all of her lives before she was ripped out, she remembered the more recent ones more clearly, and when she was ripped out she began to lose her older memories. Presumably it will be much the same for Rand, though he might remember less than Birgitte in the first place because he is apparently born less often.

@joeron I mean no disrespect here. It's just that this has all been argued over many times and I don't really want to spend time going over old arguments. The Heroes of the Horn don't have a fixed "generic" appearance in TAR. They look in TAR as they looked in the last lives they lived. For example both Rand and Mat recognize Hawkwing at Falme by what they know he looked like in RL (presumably from stories). and later when Mat gets memories of people who met Hawking in real life Hawkwing looks the same in his memories as he did at Falme.

Just to clarify does that mean that Birgitte appears in TAR by her previous appearance in RL? You would assume that she appears as her original incarnation by the distinctive features by which she is recognised..

From what we know of Birgitta's soul she is blond, athletic and an archer. We dont know if her current form is her first or thirty-first. And really it doesnt matter a great deal. T'A'R is more about the power and self control of your mind. So its natural for her to assume the form which is most comfortable for her, whether thats because it was the most fresh in her mind or merely because thats just the skin she felt like walking around in, what we do know is that if she were to be reborn naturally she would not have looked the same as she did in T'A'R but that she would have had the same characteristics.

Birgitta Silverbow is known almost as much for her bow as for her bodily attributes, and as her most famous incarnation or the one that stuck the most almost anyone who is female, blond and an excellent archer would get referenced to that Hero. But only her soul could live up to the name enough for people to believe she had been reborn.

As for Rand, he wont come back as LTT and thats a fact. My reasoning for this is plain and simple. He had too much pain in LTT's incarnation, he was not as comfortable in his skin in that incarnation and more than that. In his LTT skin/memories it is unlikely that he would focus on a past wrought with such pain when he could stick with Rand and be far more content. Afterall Rand would want to come back far more.

Though in all reality it wont be ripping out of TAR that will revive Rand, that is not a natural event for the wheel, it is an evil thing that places the hero outside of their time. Nynaeve will be the one to heal him using some fluky Saidar weave infused with super-dooper Taveren altering the chances sort of thing. Kinda like Perrins hammer, part of that was Taveren effecting how the weaves flow. Imagine that with x2 Taveren and the pattern needing the Dragon...

There is no such thing as the original incarnation. Birgitte from the legends is an amalgamation of various stories about her different lives. Well, there was an original incarnation, but that was so far in the past as to be irrelevant. Some things about Birgitte are the same in all  or most of her lives like the fact that she is an archer. Probably the braid too, but that's about it.

What we do know for sure is that when called by the Horn the Heroes look exactly as they did in their last incarnation. No guesswork is required here. I gave quotes above that Hawking looked exactly the same at Falme and in Mat's real life memories of him. The same will be true for Rand.
