Kind of with nolder on this one, I don't think bastard modding on this one is too possible. However, from what I have heard, whoever this is is not a major character so that opens up some doubt, but the claim and the character seem to go well together (from what others have said) so I almost surely believe you.

Because no, in mafia, you don't just believe someone claiming a main character with no counter claim right off the bat. A smart player decides to see where they are going with that and then counter claims once they gleaned information from the whole thing.
