ASoIaF should be your first port of call, although WoT will be finished sooner.

You know I could never get into ASoIaF. I read the first book and about half of the second. I honestly cannot tell you why I did not like it, I think it had something to do with the main characters being young/teenagers. Which I have no idea why that bugs me it just does.

I think I might pick it up and try it again, maybe I have matured a bit in my reading to not let it bother me now.

Still, it's probably the best thing Weis and Hickman have written.

I agree that it is the best thing they have written. I have read most of the Dragonlance books and most of their other series, including the one Hickman is writing with his wife.

Also just though of another decent series, The Runelords by David Farland. I thought it was pretty good. Not the best series I have ever read but worth the money/time. Interesting magic structure.

Thanks A LOT!!!

Ill definitely look into them. If only now I had more time...:( I was also browsing books and I came upon The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Anyone have comments on this series?

I was told that it was one of the big ones but couldn't get past book 2. Too much walking around.

Poor. The series is of historical interest as it was the first book that nearly single-handedly started the modern epic fantasy boom back in 1977. However, the first book is also nearly a point-by-point rip-off of Lord of the Rings and somewhat badly written. Some of the later books are more originaly, but Brooks' writing never really gets any better. I'd avoid.

Hmm, I know a good author. He is a bit different from these other great titles. Ever heard of Terry Pratchett? He is fantasy/satire, and he is totally hilarious. Try the books Night Watch or Thud first; you won't be able to put them down.

terry pratchett is fun for silly reading..although he can catch with a subtle commentary about life if you pick it up..

Not many female authors mentioned here...some of the best writer's of fantasy....Marion Zimmer Bradley, Sherri S. Tepper, Melanie Rawn. Ursula le Quinn and Mercedes Lackey.

just finished Rawn's Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series...excellant.  The characters are very strong and just a good read..you get sucked into the world and hate for the books to end....
