At some point, I will make that a group in a story.

I was having trouble choosing a profile name, since all the good ones were already gone. I finally just tried whatever funny word next popped into my head. When I googled shomra, it shows up as a Hebrew word. In the beginning of Genesis when God commands all humans to become environmentalists (some people don't seem to actually understand that passage), the Hebrew actually uses the word shomra which sort of means guardian.

Anyway, funny names aside, I started reading WoT from the first book back in 1990. It's been a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng wait.

Favorite character: Mat (that seems pretty common actually)

Least favorite character: it varies. In the early books I really didn't like Nynaeve. Elayne's been torquing me more recently.

Regular Job: I run an anti-matter reactor. Actually that's not true. I used to run an antimatter reactor. They shut it down. Americans are cheap. Now I travel to Switzerland to bang things together and talk to interesting people.

Hey Shomra! Welcome to DM! If you want to talk about theories and ideas for the last book you can join the general wheel of time discussion, they have some great theories there. Also, you can go to the general discussion board for debates&discussions and playing mafia games. The social groups are great for having fun and meeting new people. You can also RP on the boards if you want to. Have a good time here!

Two questions.. First How do one get a job like that.. What education is required?

Secondly, does it pay good? I'm not asking how much, a gentleman never asks, but more of a "big" picture. Example

I earn ALOT of money, or, I have an average salory, not much more than your average Joe..

@Arez Yes, I work on the LHC. I worked on the Tevatron before, and since it was

a proton-antiproton collider could be classified as an antimatter reactor. It always amused

me that they chose CERN for Angels and Demons rather than Fermilab. I guess proximity

to Rome counts.

On July 4, they announced the latest results for the Higgs. Both ATLAS and CMS see a signal

in the di-photon channel which is statistically significant and compatible with a Higgs. The current

run will continue through February, so really definitive results will be available within the next 12

months.

For jobs, it depends on what level you want to get involved. An LHC collaboration consists of roughly 3000

authors supported by roughly 300 institutes. Each institute probably has on average 10 support personnel.

To do physics for a living, you need a PhD. I know of only a few 'rich' physicists, but I also don't know

anyone who's hurting for money (other than students or postdocs).

One of the interesting things to watch will be Japan. If this really is the Higgs, then they've already said

they're interested in building a Higgs factory.

Welcome to DM, Shomra! Glad you've found us!

I'm going to emphasize Rand's suggestion to check out the social groups, I waited about a year after I joined to venture into that area and I missed out on a lot of fun and some good friends. Each of the groups has a slightly different focus and it's own "flavor", so to speak, and you're welcome to join as many as you like. The Band of the Red Hand is a favorite for a lot of Mat fans... I'm personally a member of the Black Tower, where insanity, spam, games, bacon, and brownies rule the day.

I also count Mat among my favorite characters -- Nynaeve is another favorite of mine.

Which of the books is your favorite, or can you pick?

If you have any questions about the site, or just nearly anything else, feel free to ask. There are a lot of helpful folks around here who'd love to point you in the right direction. And a few who will point you in the wrong direction just to watch and laugh when you get lost. But I am not one of those people. I swear.

*snicker* I'm not sure whether it's because y'all feel sorry for me, or because half the shadow side has a plan to try to convert me.

I re-type it every time, and sometimes I even change a few words. This time I even plugged your Band!

and of course we would convert you and now that i know you are open to the idea....

Now did I say that? No.....

I just figure that's the reason y'all don't try to blast me to atoms on a regular basis. Well, except for Maw during his shadow training.

Whew! Just catching up on posts.

First, it looks like I should just start a Higgs/Collider thread in General Discussions.

Second, I need to set my notifications better. ;-)

Ahh, books.

I still remember when I read the first one. I wasn't actually that impressed at that point.

The pacing was off. Really slow, then really quick.

But I kept going.

It wasn't till the fourth book that I 'connected'. I think that's because the scope begins to become clearer.

So rather than favorite book, maybe favorite scene. There are so many good ones, but maybe

my absolute top pick would be when Birgitte gets thrown out of Telaranrhiod and Nynaeve

tries to heal her and then Elayne bonds her. Now there's a challenge for an artist. Portray the

power of that scene visually.

One point where I seem to differ from everybody. I've always imagined Perrin as black.

I guess my imagination is PC. ;-)

Aside: I'm working on a better avatar. This one was made for me when I was part of a Halo racing clan.
