Idea for a Mafia Game

So this is an idea for a mafia game that I thought up maybe... a week ago. Its not very thought out/balanced yet but again I have only been thinking about it for a week in my free time. I would love some of you more experienced players and mods ideas and thoughts on it. I will continue to be putting up other things or ideas I have for this as they come up.

 

 

Pirates v Robot v Ninjas Mafia

 

Number of players - Any multiple of 3

 

Every person who plays is a member of either the Robots, Pirates or the Ninja. Players and their faction win when all members of the other two teams are dead.

 

Whatever team has a member that got lynched during the day gets the kill during that night. So if a Pirate member is lynched than the Pirates get the NK.

 

Each team gets some form of power role. Possible/ones I am thinking about. Dont know how well they would work.

 

Robots Powers?

- Can replace one of their living members with one of their old ones.

- Can attempt to recruit one of the other players into their team. Such as taking a ninja and turning them into a Robot.

- Can shut down (Not post) during the day to do something (Not yet thought up) during the night or Vice Versa.

 

Ninjas Powers?

- Can spy on player during the night learning their team and power if they have one.

- Can shoot a blow dart at an opponent once during the game which will kill them after 1 Day Night phase.

- Can take a player from one of the enemy teams and turn them into a Vanilla towny that now has a survival win condition. They are no longer part of the team so they can no longer post in the team QT but they can still be recruited by the Robot power.

 

Pirate Powers?

- Can attempt to loot (steal) a power from one of the opposing teams either as a one shot or as a substitute for their NK action.

- Can, probably one shot, hide on their boat for the night making them immune to all night actions thrown against any of their team members.

- One member, selected at the beginning of the game, can come back from the dead as a vanilla towny with a survival win condition. No longer access to team QT.

 

All of these are things that I have not thought out to balance yet or about how to implement. This is not a limit or a given for what will be in it just some ideas for could be to make it interesting. Also these are not individual but team powers so if a player is killed the team would still have access to these.

 

Cons/things I have yet to consider.

 

Because of this set up people will know that there is no such thing as town and will all know the alignment of at least some of the players in the game. This takes away a good element of mystery because everyone on all 3 teams will know "Hey I just have to make sure anyone other than people on my team get lynched during the day. Because of this I am thinking about having a vanilla town team but I am not sure how to do this without it ending up as 3 mafias against one town team which I don't think would work out well.

 

To sorta fix this I am thinking of having a certain number of players be a 3rd (4th?) party who do not know who each other are who all just have survival win conditions. This way we still have the mystery in it but its not all stacked against the town.

Yeah, that's not mafia. Mafia is informed minority (mafia) vs uninformed majority (town). The game comes from the informed minority trying to elude the uninformed majority. What you're describing is different, as you say: it's three groups of semi-informed people against each other, with perhaps a mafia group as well. That might still be fun, of course.

 

To comment on your powers:

 

Robots Powers?

- Can replace one of their living members with one of their old ones.

 

Why? This would only be of benefit if a living player in the team wanted to replace out. It could lead to some recriminations.

 

- Can attempt to recruit one of the other players into their team. Such as taking a ninja and turning them into a Robot.

 

Recruits are way more powerful than people think. Not a bad thing, but be careful. You might want to limit the number of times this can happen (I'm not sure if you're implying such already).

 

- Can shut down (Not post) during the day to do something (Not yet thought up) during the night or Vice Versa.

 

This is kind of cool, though forcing people to be silent for a day is a good way to limit activity.

 

Ninjas Powers?

- Can spy on player during the night learning their team and power if they have one.

 

This works, but is of limited benefit. I think you're imagining it like a cop role. Cops are only powerful in mafia, though, because townies don't know who else is in the town; confirming other townies or scum then gives the cop extra information, which helps. In your game, everybody in one team knows the others, so you would only use this to spy on other teams. This would return the expected result: the player is in another team. Even if you were to announce that in thread, it wouldn't be a big deal. The other two teams would either know that the player was in their team, or that they were in another team. You're only really telling them that you yourself are not on the same team as the player you investigated.

 

That said, the role cop might be useful, in order to try and take out powerful members of other teams.

I'd be wary of this. It's basically the same as the last power, in that it harms another team by reducing their number. All it means is that it leaves the poor guy that was removed to struggle on his own for a bit, hoping for a robot recruit. His old team might well kill him to be sure that doesn't happen. It's very hard to win as a survivor.

Fine. Does that mean that the other team can't use any powers that night?

This would not benefit the team that uses it, so why would they even bother?

This was added to bit by bit so I may not have looked back at the first ones. Yeah I agree it doesnt look like mafia at all but it was an idea I had.

 

I was thinking for the pirate one as he wins with survival he comes back and he still has a lynch vote. So they know who are the pirates so they use their vote to lynch one of the other teams. Again all of these were coming from the mind of a still new, only afew months, player so they are most likely going to be abit... messed up. Thank you though Panda. comments have made me think about these in different ways now as I had not thought of some of those problems before now.

What if no-one is on a QT? It is pretty much three towns then with weird win conditions.

 

That could be cool :)

 

Now THAT would be interesting. You'd have to come up with a way to do night kills, though. Maybe have all the people on the team send in a person they want to kill, and whoever gets the most votes is the target... or just make one person the team killer.

you could give each team the same power roles even- maybe just two cops each at the least? cops would have a bit of a different role in this game (since they cannot publicly reveal their findings, but they can always pretend to be on a different team i suppose.

 

i am actually starting to like this plan.... it would be quite quirky and interesting, with the changed dynamics.

 

and you could always expand it by throwing in third-parties like serial killers, cults, etc

yeah, this would be like super - mafia based - killpocalypse, it would be awesome, I would probably sign up if I had time.

As it's not technically Mafia - and it is played in the open on the Main Board, the BT might be willing to Host it as a Non Mafia Big Game. Come talk to me when you have it ready maybe?

Have a crazy idea for an almost mafia game. I'm waiting on Verb to check for balance.
