Song 88: Three Lions

Time to rub in the pain and hurt of Euro '96 with Three Lions, and a cover by a Dutch group (with a slight change in the title of the song).

ORIGINAL: Baddiel & Skinner & The Lightning Seeds

Three Lions was the official anthem of the England football team for the 1996 European Championships, which were held in England. It features the well known comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner providing the lyrics. Most football songs are about optimism, but not this one - it's all about dashed hopes about from 1966! It does sum up English football well!

COVER: Hermes House Band

In 2006, the Dutch band Hermes House Band covered the song, changing the title slightly. Instead of referring to three lions (England's emblem), it mentions heroes in the shirts instead. The group became well known in Holland and Belgium in 2994 due to their cover of I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

Song 89: Soul Limbo

The sound of leather on willow is very English and signals the arrival of summer. As does the sound of Test Match Special on the airwaves. And time to roll it out for all of you to hear, and an interesting cover version.

ORIGINAL: Booker T. & the MGs

The sound of cricket on the airwaves! The track comes off the group's eighth studio album, also called Soul Limbo. The group are an instrumental R&B band that was influential in shaping the sound of Southern Soul and Memphis Soul. They were unusual at the time as they had 2 white members in the band when the music was considered the preserve of black culture.

COVER: Snuff

Snuff are an English punk band from London. The group original featured a vocalist, guitar player, drummer and bassist. Since they started, a trombonist has been added, which features heavily on the cover. It is a cover well worth a listen.

Song 90: The Chain

The Formula 1 season is about at the half way stage, and here in the UK, we have some great introductory music for the Grand Prix courtesy of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. And I am putting it up against a heavier rock version by Tantric.

ORIGINAL: Fleetwood Mac

For the music that the BBC uses, head to about the 3 minute mark. Here you will come across the ending bass line that is well known across the world. It has never been released as a single, but receives an awful lot of airplay because of its popularity.

COVER: Tantric

American rock bank Tantric covered their version for their second album After We Go in 2004, and released it as a single. The Tantric version was used as the theme song for HBO's Family Bonds. The album never got going as the first single didn't prove successful, nor did the follow ups, including The Chain.
