Song 73: Eye of the Tiger

This week's songs for "Original vs. Cover" are great songs that feature from well known movies, and a cover version. First up are the Rocky films and Eye of the Tiger.

ORIGINAL: Survivor

Written at the request of Sylvester Stallone for the film Rocky III, it replaced Queen's Another One Bites the Dust, which Stallone couldn't get permission for. It was a popular number 1 across the globe for American rock band Survivor, and won them a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

COVER: HOPE

Who? For those of you who do not know, HOPE are a rapcore band from Poland. They released their cover in 2008. After decent commercial success in Poland, the band filmed a music video for the song. The video had hardly any airtime on MTV2 in the U.S; yet was successful in various European countries. It won't be everybody's cup of tea!

Song 74: My Heart Will Go On

Even though I am away, there is no rest, for another song gets ready to face the "Original vs. Cover" treatment. This week's songs are great songs that feature from well known movies. After Eye of the Tiger, next up is My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.

ORIGINAL: Céline Dion

Like Marmite, you either love Céline Dion or you don't. It won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Original Song, before dominating the 1999 Grammy Awards, scooping 4 awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The music was written by James Horner, and lyrics by Will Jennings.

COVER: New Found Glory

American punk rockers (I use that term very loosely) released their cover in 2000 on their From the Screen to Your Stereo EP. It is very different in tempo and vocalisation compared to the original. Again, it probably isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Song 75: The Imperial March from Star Wars

We continue our theme of Soundtrack Music in "Original vs. Cover", and one of the greatest film franchises ever gets the treatment next. That is Star Wars, and The Imperial March by John Williams, with a cover version by Metallica.

ORIGINAL: John Williams

Williams' career has spanned 6 decades, and includes some great films. He has been nominated 45 times for Academy Awards, and won 5 times. He has scored all of Steven Spielburg's films except for two. He has composed theme music for four Olympic Games.

COVER: Metallica

Metallica are a heavy metal band from the USA, who formed in 1981. With a host of awards, and many albums under their belt, they are a very successful band. But they have alienated music fans, through their own music (the album St. Anger) and taking on Napster in a lawsuit back in 2000.
