Krak can't add up as there were 4 votes for Covers - Sam, Canis, msc0083, Krak.  ::)

Anyway, I am taking over again for this week, and tonight will see a double bill to get us back in sink as Krak was slack! :P So refrain from voting until both songs have been posted!

Song 66: Crazy in Love

I am taking over "Original vs. Cover" again this week, and we have an interesting combination first up. My first offering pits RnB superstar Beyoncé against American alternative rockers, Switchfoot.

ORIGINAL: Beyoncé

There is no denying that Beyoncé is one of the leading ladies of RnB. With help from rapper Jaz-Z, her husband, it achieved universal success, gaining many top 10 entries on a host of charts. Critical acclaims followed, with the song won 2 Grammy Awards in 2004 - Best R&B Song, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

vs.

COVER: Switchfoot

Alternative rock group, Switchfoot, covered the song in 2007 as part of Yahoo!'s CoverArt series. The group added a rock feel to the song, while maintaining the fundamental elements of the track. Early years were spent on the Christian Rock scene, they achieved mainstream recognition when 4 of their songs featured on the 2002 film A Walk to Remember.

Song 67: Mambo Number 5

And this is the next billing in "Original vs. Cover". And for the next song, we go a little bit Latin.

ORIGINAL: Perez Prado

This is a mambo and jive dance song that was originally recorded by Prado back in 1949. Prado was the bandleader and composer, and best known as "The King of Mambo". Interest in his music soared during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s as Latin music took off in America.

COVER: Lou Bega

Bega's version is a remake of the original, and he has made up the lyrics and sampled heavily from the original. It was an international sensation, topping charts all across the world, and was number 1 in France for an incredible 20 weeks back in 1999, when it was released.

So, the results are as follows:

- Beyonce secured a 5-0 win over Switchfoot

- Perez Prado gained a narrow 3-2 win over Lou Bega

Time to get the next "Original vs. Cover" up.

Song 68: Rocketman

Next up is a song by Sir Elton John, and interesting take as a cover version by William Shatner.

ORIGINAL: Sir Elton John

Released in 1972, this song echoes the theme of David Bowie's 1969 song Space Oddity. The song's lyrics describe a Mars-bound astronaut's mixed feelings at leaving his family in order to do his job. The song is a pop ballad anchored by John's piano, with atmospheric texture added by synthesizer and processed slide guitar. It reached number 2 in the UK charts.

COVER: William Shatner

This cover version was recorded at the 1978 Saturn Awards Ceremony. It has built up a cult following, with several parodies on popular TV shows, including Family Guy and Futurama. It is a spoken-word cover, and it utilizes chroma key video techniques to simultaneously portray three different images of Shatner, representing the different facets of the Rocket Man's character.

Song 69: You Really Got Me

To start proceedings, I am picking the song that actually gave me the idea for this thread - Over the Hills and Far Away.

ORIGINAL: The Kinks

Released in 1964, this single reached number 1 in the UK charts for the Kinks. It also happened to be the group's breakthrough hit, and helped them establish themselves in the USA. It was an early hit song that built around power chords, which later influenced many musicians in rock and roll and heavy metal.

vs.

COVER: Van Halen

This is probably the best known cover, which has also received the most amount of airplay. Recorded in 1978, it was released on their début album, and helped propel the band into recognition. Van Halen have built on the great guitar solo part originally done by the Kinks.
