Song 57: Waterloo

I return this week for song 57, and we go Scandinavian as we have an original and a cover from Sweden. One group is massive, while the other is virtually unknown. It's Waterloo, with ABBA taking on Nashville Train.

ORIGINAL: ABBA

This was the first single from Swedish pop group ABBA's second album Waterloo. The song won ABBA the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest on 6 April and it began their path to worldwide fame. It reached number 1 in a host of countries, and charted inside the top 10 in the US. Interesting fact that I found a few weeks back - the UK didn't give ABBA any points at the ESC!

COVER: Nashville Train

There isn't much I can tell you about Nashville train except they are a Swedish country band. They included some of ABBA's own backing band members and covered the song in the 1970s on their album ABBA Our Way.

Song 58: That Don't Impress Me Much

Song 58 sees Shania Twain, the Canadian country cop superstar, take on Claudia Girardin, a complete unknown I stumbled across on YouTube singing this song while searching for covers of Shania Twain's songs. One is more pop-focused, and the other more country.

ORIGINAL: Shania Twain

With over 65 million album sales, 5 Grammy Awards and 27 BMI Songwriter Awards, and the best-selling album of all time by a female musician (her third album, Come On Over). Not some bad achievements! It was the sixth single release from that album, and released in between 1998 and 1999 across the world. It got good global success - maybe it was partly due to the leopard print catsuit!

COVER: Claudia Girardin

There isn't much I can find out about her, despite having MySpace and Facebook pages. I believe she is Canadian, and has an album due out sometime this year. She has quite a gravelly sounding voice. Maybe someone to look out for in the future...
