Hello :)

So I'm doing a reread, and Perrin has just agreed to be arrested, but then goes back on his word by saying that the Whitecloaks didn't help hold the line. (after the trollocs are dealt with).

"But if you stay here, in Emond's Field..." Bran rounded on him, and other men shouted loud noes; Faile rode close and seized his arm, but he ignored all of them "...Then you will know where I am, and your soldiers will be welcome to help our defenses."

Chapter 45, The Tinker's Sword, Page 749

Then, after the Trollocs are killed off in the epic battle, Bornhald tries to arrest him, but Perrin says:

"I said I would not resist, if you aided." Surprising, how calm his voice was; inside he seethed with a slow, cold anger. "If you aided, Whitecloak. Where were you?" The man did not answer.

Chapter 56, Goldeneyes, Page 958

Am I the only one who has seen this?

P.S I probably wouldn't have bothered with this, but I'm really bored and thought, may as well point it out :)

I don't think anybody really talks about this because we see things the same way Perrin does - He made an agreement with the Whitecloaks: He'll let them arrest him if they help with the defenses. This was a bargain more than a promise and the Whitecloaks did not fulfill their end of it. Therefore, Perrin was not obligated to hold up his end.

As I recall, the Whitecloaks did not aid in the fighting. If it had not been for the women taking up arms and filling in holes where the Whitecloaks should have been, the Two Rivers would have been overrun. Even the Tinkers contributed far more than the Whitecloaks.

What actualy saved the Two Rivers was Faile bringing the people that were gathered to defend Devens Ride, but yeah the Whitecloaks did nothing and as a result Perrin is not forced to surrender to execution (I don't even want to think about the reprocussions on TG if he had lol).

Yeah, every time I read that scene I find myself wondering where Perrin said anything about "aid". Dain's an insufferable jackass, but he has a point.

Haha. well put.

Anyway, I dont htink anyone really cares.

If I was Perrin, Id lie. Screw the whitecloaks.

Perrin had every right to be pissed, women fought in their place.

So screw technicality.

Agreed. He was acting in the spirit of the bargain, if not the letter.
