I was just re-reading New Spring and I just noticed that Jordan snuck a young Weiramon into the book. I've read it many times before but never noticed before. He in the first chapter, he is a messenger coming to ask for Lan's assistance with an attack.

Did anybody else notice this. I want to re-read The Shadow Rising again to see if there was an instance where Weiramon and Lan were in the same room. Lan clearly did not think much of him in New Spring.

The messenger's name is never given, but he wears silver-worked boots. It could be Weiramon or any other noble.

Weiramon doesn't appear in the series until TFoH. He is not mentioned when the nobles gather at the Stone of Tear for Rand's announcement.

We don't know that's Weiramon... and I kinda doubt it. I believe Weiramon's stupidity is a pretense designed to hide that he is a Darkfriend. The stupidity of the Tairen seems real. Also the son of a High Lord would not be sent as a messenger.

Read the passage it's right at the start maybe page 15-17. Lan obviously thinks him an officer of some kind. Plus the description used is on the money.

Sometimes, Luckers, people are really just that stupid !

And sometimes, they are not...

Absorbed in one another, Weiramon and Gedwyn did not hear him riding up on them. Gedwyn was idly playing with his reins, his features cold with contempt. The Tairen was red-faced. "I don't care who you are," he was saying to the black-coated man in a low, hard voice, spittle flying, "I won't take more risk without a command direct from the lips of..."

Abruptly the pair became aware of Bertome, and Weiramon's mouth snapped shut. He glared as if he wanted to kill Bertome. The Asha'man's ever-present smile melted away. The wind gusted, cold and sharp as clouds drifted across the sun, but no colder than Gedwyn's sudden stare. With a small shock Bertome realized the man also wanted to strike him dead on the spot.

Gedwyn's icily murderous gaze did not change, but Weiramon's face underwent a remarkable transformation. The red faded slowly as he produced a smile in an instant, an oily smile with only a trace of mocking condescension. "I've been thinking about you, Bertome," he said heartily. "A pity al'Thor strangled your cousin. With his own hands, I hear. Frankly, I was surprised you came when he called. I've seen him watching you. I fear he plans something more . . . interesting . . . for you than thrashing your heels on the floor while his fingers tighten on your throat."

Warning! Long post, with no real point.

I've always found Weiramon to be an interesting character. He is almost surely a dark friend. The number of time's he's tried to kill Rand and gotten away with it is actually quite impressive. Also the number of times he's used his 'stupidity' to try and throw a spanner into the works is a joke.

Here's the few times that come to mind directly:

- During Rand's campaign against the Seanchan where Rand almost dies. Weiramon is guarding the north when a group of Seanchan manage to somehow get past him and get to Rand. Later Weiramon gives an excuse about chasing some other band of soliders.

- During the siege of the Stone by the rebels. He arrives by boat and tries to get the defenders to lead a sortie. It is implied that if Darlin had allowed him it would have gone badly.

I'm almost sure there are other incidents. Actually I think every time there's been a battle with him around he's managed to do something negative for Rand that's been put off to him just being stupid.

Also, during his conversation with the Ashaman quoted above, he tried quite hard to turn the character who's POV we were following (Cant remember who exactly but was related to the Cairhien Noble lady who hung herself). He said some pretty nasty stuff. It bounced off because the character was too busy try to figure out what Weiramon wanted to be angered but ol Weiramon did try. I have to wonder what he's been saying to other Nobles off camera.

My feeling is that Weiramon is a very clever dark friend who's managed to get into a good spot. I also wouldn't be surprised to see him survive right till then end. He might even be the one to put the knife in Rand.

Also with New Spring. If that officer was Weiramon then it fits his pattern well. He reports a small band of Aiel and says he'll be the hammer. The Aiel band is 10x the numbers and the hammer never shows. The only reason Lan survived was because the Aiel didn't need to fight any more. Although you then have to ask why the shadow wanted Lan dead. The shadow did wipe out Malkier. They must have had some reason to do it when they did, dark prophesy prehaps.

For someone who is so stupid, he is incredibly good at getting out alive. So yeah, I would say he is definetly a darkfriend. And if he is a Friend of the Dark, that makes him pretty cool, in my books :P Acting stupid like that and getting away with it is impressive.

Amen to that.
