Mattin Stepaneos King of Illian

We havent seen Mattin Stepaneos since he bumped into Egwene in TKOD. Any guesses on what happened to him.

Incidentally, why is the Great Hunt of the Horn traditionally called in Illian?

Yeah, I don't see much problem with Mattin becoming King once more. He'll just need to swear to Rand to stand ready for the Last Battle and not be a douchebag and that'll cover it I reckon. Rand's only interest in collecting kingdoms is so they're not against him and getting ready them ready for the Last Battle. He has no wish to hold onto any of it, and politics is nobody's cup of tea. The only ones he hasnt really released is the Aiel I guess...

 

Anywho, I can probably see a few scenes where Mattin confidence in, and respect for, Rand increases through being around Rand and watching his actions. Maybe in rallying Illian to improve defenses against possible invasion by the Seanchan. Egwene's already shaken Mattins confidence in his previous views of Ran, so the rest is kinda up to Rand himself, but with everything that's gonna happen in these two books I dont see a whole lot of this happening 'on screen'.

 

Edit: By that I mean in sheer volume of Mattin related stuff not poppiung up 'on screen'. All the significant events will be there, but not 'Mattin has a bath and sniffs scenes'

I don't think the King of Ilian can designate his successor.

Mattin was deposed by the Council, or whatever that body of nobles that Sammael controlled, was called. Rand was given the crown by them.

Whether that deposing was legal or not is a different matter - Rand is just the King of Ilian.

If he wants, he can appoint Mattin as his steward or something but I don't think he has the right to appoint another king in his stead.

But with no mention of Stepaneos in TGS could it be he was carried off by the Black.

Well, they didn't need to make Mattin swear on the oath rod and the entire TGS WT segment is all Egwene's personal journey.

So he wouldn't have cause to feature.

Maybe the Amyrlin's anger will be known when she produces Mattin like a rabbit from the hat and says "Oi Rand, you're not the King of Ilian, he is!" and Rand does a belly laugh.

What really bugged me about Egwene's conversation with Mattin was that she went out of her way to bring up that Rand had only conquered Andor in order to get rid of one of the Forsaken, yet didn't think that the information that this is exactly what happened to his kingdom was a relevant piece of data to share. It doesn't quite rank up there with the inanity of not mentioning to Gawyn that Gaebril was Rahvin during the conversation they had about Rand killing Gaebril, but it's still kind of inane.

 

I think that Rand would love to give this guy his crown back. One of his main concerns is the stability of all the places he's taken over once he dies at TG, and having the king of the place back in charge would go a long way towards preventing it from falling apart in a civil war.
