Ever hear of the wonderful Father Ted tv series? Go look it up, is really funny...

I thought you meant Ted, Thom's brother!

You do realize that while a lot of what you people are posting is irrelevant gibberish to this series. It can come dangerously close to being spoilers for other series right? Haven't seen anything horribly so, so far. I'm just sayin, be careful. Just because it's not a WoT spoiler, doesn't mean you're not spoiling some poor schmuck on something else.

To be honest you have a point. Removed one reference to a direct character obviously from a particular series. Don't think anything else is that spoiler heavy unless you've already read the events referenced.

Just having a bit of fun, but I'll stop de-railing the thread.

And actually on the thread topic:

Enjoying reading this. Your pace is just fine, don't speed up for our sakes. Though I dare say you will be speeding up shortly. Watch for stuff about Rand at certain key moments.

'And like an eejit I had to stay tapping away.' Father Ted

'I have to kick Bishop Brennan up the arse

Dougal: Sorry Ted. I was concentrating too hard on looking holy.

Ted: They've taken the roads in.

Bishop Brennan: He DID kick me up the arse!

Dougal: God, Ted. D'you remember that feller who was so good at fashion they had to shoot him?

Dougal: It's like a great big tide of jam. But jam made out of... old women.

Mrs Doyle: I'm so excited. Taking on three bishops all at once. I can't wait.

It's nice to have a nun around. Gives the place a bit of glamour.

"Attention please, a child has been lost in the tunnel of goats."

Dougal: Do you believe in God, then Ted?

Ah Father Ted. Your missed ya big goshite.

And yes something to do with this thread. Oh I hope I'm not spoling Father Ted.

A side note, regarding spoilers, I cannot feel offended should someone spill the beans on something that was released over two decades ago. If I wanted it spoiler free, I should have read it when it was published; being in kindergarten was no excuse :P.

Jeez, I'm old. I was on break from college when I started the first book. I believe it was 1990. One day, I left the book on the EL(subway, I'm from Chicago). Talk about peeved. I immediately bought another. Of course, I didn't realize I'd be STILL reading this series over TWENTY YEARS LATER.  :o

Okay, so I'm following Rand and Tam walk to the village.

Here's what I've got so far:

- The 'o' in Dragonmount is the symbol Lewis Therin Telamon describes in the prologue. It's got a yin/yang feel to it, but it is more likely connected to the saidin "the male half of the power that drove the universe", or rather saidin and the female counterpart.

- The prologue is probably a flash-forward of some sort, because at the end it is attributed to the record of the fourth age, but chapter 1 puts us in the third age.

- Of the world: Fantasy setting, with magic... and that is a Good ThingTM. It has it's own culture, as referenced by the holiday, Bel Tine, but six words later uses "Saturday", so the culture isn't completely alien.

- Rand has seen a dark rider, with a touch of unreality about him, and I know that Tam has seen or sensed him too, even if he wouldn't say so.

- Tam has magical ability, and Rand does too, albeit undeveloped. The whole flame and void thing has to be a metaphor for some form of magic energy.

- As an extension of the last two points, Tam won't admit to seeing the rider because he wants Rand to work it out using his own ability. Tam is confident (for the moment) that he has the situation under control.

- Tam is probably not a native to the village, because Rand pointed out (in thought) that nobody else knew of the flame and void.

- While I accept that Rand's mother is dead, I do not yet accept that Tam is the biological father. Could be, but it is too early to tell. I say this because Tam is probably a powerful <mage> and Rand is clearly going to be pivotal to the plot ('ya know, being the protagonist and all), that's reason enough for Tam to act as Rand's caretaker.

Okay, so that's page six...... I'm falling asleep at the moment, so I'll read more later (I have to alternate between day schedules and night schedules, so I will be reading this irregularly.)

I hope I've got something right from my first impressions, let me know if I'm in the right ballpark.

This is pretty darn interesting. This is a unique experience. Many people on this forum know this series from the rooter to the tooter. This guy don't know NOTHING!! Wow. Hope he likes it.

Ted, I'm hugely confused.

What in the blue blazes is the Red Wedding?!?

Not 100% sure, but if memory serves me correctly, it was where that guy who has all the weird daughters gets pissed because Robb married the girl who took care of him, so he and the Lannisters blow the place up and kill them. Of course, revenge is served when Joffrey dies soon after.

"Down with that sort of thing"

"Careful now"

Sorry for dragging out the Father Ted references, but the protest scene about The Passion of Saint Tibulus was filmed outside the cinema in my home town. And yes, I'm sure, God knows there can't be many other lurid pink Ormonde cinemas out there...

I am cursed with an analytical mind. I mean it. The problem with an analytical mind is that you can't turn it off. I can't play rock-paper-scissors without doing a statistical analysis of my opponent in my head. I can't listen to music with lyrics without trying to find the innuendos and second meanings. When someone asks a simple question, like "how are you today?" I cannot just simply answer. No, in that split second between the question and the reply my mind races probing "what answer does he want?", "does he want to know, or is he making conversation?" "are my feelings genuine or topical?" "What should I be feeling?" "What is he feeling?" "Is it the socially responsible thing to mirror his feelings?" "Would that be disingenuous?" "is this a trap?" "If so, what's his motive" "if not, why does he want to know?". Your head is always cluttered with facts that are not relevant to anything, or worse facts that are relevant, but so obscure that that your friends all think you spend every waking moment studying an encyclopedia, but really it's just some footnote of some article you skimmed on the Internet five years ago. AAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.

This is the perfect series for you, there are twists turns, Foretellings & Viewings to figure out. should be interesting.

"Carai an Caldazar! Carai an Ellisande! Al Ellisande!"

I wonder if you can figure this out before ch18!

Many apologies, have not had time to read so far today. I have cleared my Saturday for reading, that is if I don't find time tonight.

I read chapter 8 on Thursday evening with plans to post my notes today (knowing I'd be busy), but my computer lost them. Should I skim the chapter and recreate my thoughts, or summarize and proceed to Chapter 9?

Great thread, also very strange that you would joint he forum before you read XD. but its nice to have new people around.

I signed up to play the mafia games here and, although there are whole forums dedicated to mafia, my friends play here. Once I signed up here I looked at my stack of 'things I should read/watch/do if I can find the time' and moved WoT to the top. About halfway into the prologue the thought occurred to me that I had a unique chance to present a fresh perspective on the series, as most people join a fan club after they become fanatics.

I did not expect over 1000 reads and over 100 posts in 3 days!
