Some new information has been revealed about the Star Wars online MMORPG (?)

Anyone who’s had their eyes glued to their monitor waiting for news regarding BioWare’s upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic can finally blink for a second. The developer just announced a new Advanced Class System for the game, and it sounds awesome.

With this system players will have access to unique skills and abilities, allowing for more flexibility during character customization.

“For example, all Smugglers are lucky, opportunistic swindlers,” explains the game’s official site. “But, do you want to be the kind of Smuggler that sneaks into the middle of a firefight and quickly blasts away at an opponent from point-blank range? Or do you want to be the kind that keeps to the outskirts of the battle, strategically picking your targets from a distance?”

Every class in the game will feature two advances classes to choose between as you level up, but choose carefully, as you can only have one advanced class active. Essentially, this system seems similar to talent specialization in World of Warcraft or sub-classes in other RPGs, although it's unclear if you'll be able to go back and reset your advanced class after choosing it.

If you want to read more, the full announcement can be seen on The Old Republic’s official site

Just came out with a new video of the Jedi-Hunting Sith Warrior!!!

We're still a ways away from Star Wars: The Old Republic's release, but LucasArts has put out a new video showcasing the Sith Warrior class and the planet of Korriban. It doesn't go into great detail about his abilities, but you'll see a few shots of saber-swinging action

that was pretty freaking awesome

I was *really* confused because I forgot in Kotor 1 the "sith empire" destroyed alderaan

I was thinking this was for a new clonetrooper game or something at first XD

Malak destroyed Taris in Kotor 1, not Alderaan :)

Just discovered this forum and thread. Most personally anticipated game at the moment! :) And I assume Alderaan does build itself back up after the war. Or sometime between this game and the first movie. It's like, 4 /thousand/ years of time between.

I'm waiting for this. As an ex-WoW player and lover of Star Wars, I can't wait to play this. And, opposite of Star Trek Online, the Star Wars one looks like it'll be handled well.

The latest dispatch from BioWare reveals how choice and consequences will affect force-wielding Jedi. It also shows off lots of lightsaber combat.

If you've been following the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, you'll want to check out the most recent video from the BioWare development team. In this installment, the devs describe the design concepts that have gone into the Jedi and their two character classes, including the option to take your Jedi down a heroic path or turn him to the dark side. The team was also kind enough to show off some of the cool lightsaber dueling mechanics that will be a big part of any Jedi's playthrough of the upcoming MMO. Check out the video below, and visit the official website for more details.

Lots of Old Republic News

Han Solo's Homeworld Revealed

In BioWare's upcoming PC MMORPG, Corellia is a vital part of the Republic's infrastructure but recent events have cut off the official lines of communication between the bustling trade world and the Republic's capital, Coruscant. What could cause that to happen a developed planet in the heart of Republic space? This art, while cool, doesn't have the answer.

"Holo-video and images from Corellia show widespread destruction in Coronet city, and though an act of terrorism has not been ruled out, some fear the situation may be more serious," reads the official HoloNet entry for Corellia.

Before the troubles, Corellian capital Coronet City was renowned for being a thriving center of commerce -- with a seedy core of corruption under its law-abiding facade. The fiercely proud Corellians also foster a unique identity for their cultural center by maintaining wide swathes of parkland within the metropolis.

Anyone else ready for Star Wars: The Old Republic? We sure are, but fair warning: If you make a Corellian smuggler with an alien buddy and a certain rogueish charm, you can't be our friend.

Old Republic not coming to 360

A BioWare spokesperson quickly denounced a leaked memo from UK video game retailer GAME that listed the developer's upcoming Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, as coming out for Xbox 360 in 2011.

"While we recognize that there are other operating systems and platforms available for games today, our development is specific to the personal computer using the Windows operating system at this time," said community rep Sean Dahlgren in a post on the BioWare forums. "As to why The Old Republic is on that list, we have no idea but to allay any confusion, we should not be on there."

Publishers EA and LucasArts are no doubt looking to recoup the historic investment that has gone into The Old Republic's development, but many hurdles remain for the console MMO we've been waiting for.

Would an Xbox 360 release make you any more likely to play The Old Republic? What about if it gives you a second-rate experience?

Spaceships for Everyone!

Onstage at EA’s E3 press conference, BioWare’s Greg Zeschuk announced that every player will be able to earn their own personal spacecraft in upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Zeschuk described your ship’s role as both an “expression of your personal style” and a base to explore the galaxy from. Dr. Zeschuk went on to introduce the game’s PvP system, which pits Empire versus Republic in dedicated “warzones” on the ground. A new pre-rendered trailer then debuted to end the press conference with a bang.

One of The Old Republic’s warzones is on Princess Leia’s ill-fated homeworld of Alderaan, which also serves as the setting for the newly unveiled “Hope” trailer. The impressive animation shows a grizzled veteran leading a company of Republic soldiers in a valiant fight against battle droids (ugh) and Imperials. Not long after ambushing a column of enemy troops, the good guys are set upon and torn apart by a squad of dark Jedi, only to be saved by a friendly Jedi before the coup de grace can be administered to the sergeant. The expected (and awesome) lightsaber duel ensues, and culminates with some kind of Force-powered hadouken blasting the lead Sith into an outcropping of rock.

Darth Revan Returns...sort of

We're not saying Revan is back in a traditional sense, but BioWare and LucasArts teased that players will find out the fate of Darth Revan in their pending MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. Check out the “mysteries” trailer below to set the scene, and make sure to watch till the very end for another surprise.

Old Republic Mysteries Trailer

Revan’s fate grabbed headlines as the most interesting tidbit out of yesterday’s PAX panel, but a few other noteworthy items also surfaced. According to reports by G4, Alderaan will be a prime setting for Imperial vs. Republic PvP, and the game will include standard MMO fair such as guilds, crafting, and raids. This translates over to classes, too. The Old Republic will have easily understood equivalents – the Trooper: Commando is on par with a tank, and the Jedi: Wizard is essentially a healer. BioWare detailed that divergence from traditional MMOs will fall in the areas of player choice and narrative.

Lastly, BioWare clarified that the space combat previously revealed is in effect “on rails,” as the game isn’t using space as a means of exploration – combat is the priority.

The Planet Voss

BioWare has revealed another setting for its Star Wars MMO: the planet Voss, which has not appeared in Star Wars fiction to date. According to the developer's website, this world is inhabited by two antagonistic species that hate outsiders nearly as much as each other.

The Gormak, which number in the millions and control the vast majority of planet, are a technologically adept but pre-spaceflight race of xenophobes. Even though they hugely outnumber the Voss and have tried to destroy them for generations, this other race holds fast to its mountaintop home thanks to its powerful Force-using Mystics – whose clairvoyant abilities even the most powerful Jedi and Sith don't entirely understand.

The planet is independent of both Empire and Republic in the time period that the game takes place, and will undoubtedly offer some interesting missions for players of both factions.

Most importantly, the simplistic phonemes that make up its name can be used for excellent punning. You could exile criminals to Vosstralia, or lament the lack of female companionship at a Vossage party. You could even enhance the local cuisine with secret Voss.

Newest Class: Sarlacc Enforcer

In a surprise move, Bioware and LucasArts have unveiled their latest class for their upcoming Star Wars MMO, which is sure to be a favorite to players who want a gameplay experience about slowly digesting their enemies over a thousand years.

The Sarlacc Enforcer combines the best elements of remaining completely still for long periods of time and waiting patiently for passing enemies, creating a thrilling gameplay experience for players tired of having to do things in an MMO.

"Whether meditating from a reinforced base in the desert of Tatooine, intimidating the pirates in the alleys of Ord Mantell, or doing some mercenary clean up on the lower levels of Coruscant, a Sarlacc has a trick up each of its countless sleeves," explains the new class description on The Old Republic's official website. "Taking a no-frills approach to hand to hand to hand to hand combat, the Sarlacci have a well-earned place among the galaxy’s most feared warriors."

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for additional info on the upcoming Star Wars MMO. We've heard rumors of a playable Rancor class to be revealed soon that could really shake up the existing framework.

Advanced Jedi Classes Revealed

BioWare has unveiled the advanced Jedi Knight classes in upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. Behold the Jedi Knight Guardian and the Jedi Knight Sentinel.

5531Picture3png-610x0.png

BioWare has only revealed scant details on each class:

A wall between the good people of the Republic and their enemies, the Guardian stands firm in the face of overwhelming odds and dares opponents to attack. Perfect concentration and use of the Force allows smooth movement even in heavy armor--making the Guardian a hard target to take down. Leaders on and off the battlefield, Guardians are known for inspiring allies to amazing feats, making them invaluable for conflicts of any size.

Control and focus are the hallmarks of the Sentinel. Through years of training the Sentinel learns the art of using two Lightsabers simultaneously to create an intricate web of damage that is almost impossible to evade. Manipulating the Force, the Sentinel can see holes in the enemy defense, potential flaws in their own technique and how best to plan for both.
