The Band of the Red Hand enters the second month of our two month break from our search for our "Dream Band". Last month saw us look at Soundtracks and Film Music, and for May, we shall be focusing on the world of Classical Music. This thread allows you to nominate your favourite piece of Classical music to enter into the "It's A Knockout" contest to win the title of the Band's and DM's Favourite Piece of Classical Music. And below is what you need to do!

Between now and THURSDAY 13TH MAY 2010, nominate the piece of music you want to see try and win the contest. Follow the simple proforma below to get a nomination in. Name the piece of classical music, explain why you have nominated it, and provide a YouTube clip (or similar) of the piece.

Reason for Nomination:
YouTube (or similar link):

You can nominate more than one piece. Any nomination that is seconded, i.e. Krak suggests Piece X and Farcrie agrees with the nomination, automatically qualifies for a place in the "It's A Knockout" contest. There will also be 4 seeded pieces of music, which were the top 4 from when this contest was held in March 2009 - results can be found here. Otherwise, it will be done on a first come, first served basis. If there are any gaps at the end of the nomination period, I will fill in the gaps.

PLEASE NOTE: I am looking for a minimum of 4 or 12 nominations (taking into account the 4 seeds), and will be flexible on the "It's A Knockout" format depending on numbers.

If you have any questions, please post them in this thread.

Piece of Music: Canon in D

Reason for Nomination: Such a beautiful, elegant, yet simple song that tugs at the soul and, I'm sure, conjures up the image of a wedding (for the ladies).

I put this in last time when I made the full list, and I am nominating it again!

Piece of Music: The Great Gate of Kiev by Modest Mussorgsky

Reason for Nomination: This happens to be my favourite piece of classical music at the moment. The Great Gate of Kiev is the rousing finale to Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, where he cleverly depicts various scenes with the music. The Promenade that links each picture (i.e. the walk between the pictures) features prominently. It sounds like a great procession is going through in celebration. A great piece of music!

Hi guys! Can guests make some recommendations?  ;D

Scheherazade by Ririmsky korsakov

Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048 by JS Bach

War March of the Priests by Felix Mendelssohn

Reason for Nomination:

Just some favorites of mine, although I'm mostly a Baroque fan.

Yes they can! And are encouraged!

Also, please can you follow the format as requested in my original post? It makes my life easier when setting up the "It's A Knockout" threads. :) And YouTube clips are needed as well. Thanks! :)

Piece of Music: William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini

Reason for Nomination: It's the Lone Ranger! Yes, this piece of music was used for that classic. Coming from the opera William Tell, Rossini uses the whole orchestra for this wonderful piece of music. Very recognisable and very enjoyable. A great start to the opera!

Piece of Music: Scheherazadeby Rimsky Korsakov

Reason for Nomination: The violin in the first movement, "The Sea and Sinbad's Ship" is just mesmerizing!

Piece of Music: War March of the Priists by Felix Mendelssohn

Reason for Nomination: Written as a march to  "Athalia", its very recognizable. Gives me the feely of victory after an enduring struggle.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048 by JS Bach

Reason for Nomination: Its just one of my favorite Baroque pieces, which I feel captures the essences of the baroque style. Personally I don't think baroque gets the credit its due.

Piece of Music: "Le veau d'or" by Charles Gounod

Reason for Nomination: Of all the pieces from Gounod's opera Faust, this one best illustrates the character of Mephistopheles, the devil that serves as Faust's mentor/guide/tempter.  In it, he sings of the Golden Calf and its general effect on the incorporeal world through time, even going so far as to proudly boast that "Satan leads the dance."  ("Et Satan conduit la bal!")

I am currently sitting at 11 nominations - the 4 automatic qualifiers and 7 nominations. Still plenty of time to go!

Piece of Music: Night on a Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky

Reason for Nomination: Mussorgsky composed the piece, but it was arranged and played after his death by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. A witches' sabbath is the theme of the piece. The music definitely gives the feeling something evil is going on - and I think it is one of the best pieces of music to depict wind. The piece has been used many times in popular culture, with Disney's Fantasia the most notable.
