I always thought that mummies and zombies were among the most unfrightening monsters. Too slow. No thought process to speak of. Easy to kill.  :D

Mummies were fascinating. The Ancient Egyptians were a death obsessed culture- they spent their entire lives preparing for the actual event and what would happen afterwards. And their techniques for preserving bodies were impeccable for the time- the good ones still have skin intact- 3,000 years later! Of course, it was not a particularily pleasant process- there were rituals to undergo, and then the organs of the body- specifically the heart, liver, stomach and brain (which was pulled out through the nostrils using little hooked instruments). They were dried seperately and put into Canopic Jars. Then the body was packed with salt, among other things, to dry it out- imagine the smell by now! After 40 days, the body could be wrapped, yet another timely process, especially when one thinks about how precisely it was done, and the placement of amulets between the wrappings. Finally, the death mask would be fitted, and after some more rituals, the body would be ceremoniously carried to wherever it was laid to rest- be it Pyramid, Tomb, or graveyard. The burial places themselves were exquisite and some times...
