Blake Lively has nabbed the female lead opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern."

Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs her father's aerospace company and hires cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who later becomes the intergalactic policeman Green Lantern. In the comics, the romance became complicated when an alien race bestowed her the power of a crystal called the Star Sapphire.

The search for the Martin Campbell-directed film's leading lady was almost as intense as the one for its title star. Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner were reportedly among those in the mix for the role.

The role called for a slightly older actress but Lively, who stars in the CW's "Gossip Girl," impressed the studio and filmmakers with her audition. Warners was also impressed with her work in "The Town," its adaptation of the gritty Chuck Hogan novel directed by Ben Affleck now in post-production.

The casting process will next turn its eye to the roles of Dr. Hector Hammond, one of the key villains, and the alien known as Sinestro.

Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing the big-budget sci-fi movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana in March with an eye towards a June 17, 2011 release.

The script was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green, with Michael Goldenberg currently rewriting.

Lively is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royle, Edge of Darkness) has shot down the rumors about Jackie Earle Haley being in the running to play the classic villian Sinestro in Green Lantern. Campbell announced that Mark Strong (who played the villain in Sherlock Holmes) is actually in talks for the role, while also pointing out that Strong even bears a resemblance to the way Sinestro has long been drawn in the comics (which this writer agrees that he does). Campbell also mentioned a few of the supporting characters that we can expect to see in the movie, which include Kilowog (a giant muscular alien) and Tomar-Re (the orange skinned alien with the big finned mohawk). Campbell also told CHUD that the version of Hal Jordan that Ryan Reynolds will be playing is based much more on the revisionist "hotshot military guy" as first seen in the Emerald Dawn mini-series. That's a depature from the more straight-laced and conservative intergalactic cop that many older fans remember from the 1960s, when Green Lantern was partnered with the more liberal Green Arrow.

Potential good news came out recently that Imageworks has been signed on to do the Special Effects for the Green Lantern movie.  Imageworks is known for it's realistic looking work on The Day After Tomorrow; it's also done The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, the Spider Man franchise, Valkyrie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf's Up, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many many more.  Obviously they have a very varied and eclectic resume, but this definitely bodes well for some great special effects

Sinestro has been cast!

Mark Strong is officially playing Sinestro in director Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern.  We can all say thank you to Geoff Johns for the info, as he revealed the news earlier today via Twitter:

Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro.

Kilowog, the Guardians, Oa…all breathtaking. The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!

If you remember, Strong was “in talks” back in the middle of January, so this news isn’t surprising.  As a huge fan of Mark Strong, I think it’s perfect casting.  With Green Lantern getting ready to start filming, expect a lot more stories about casting and the production soon.

Even with her lengthy resume, Angela Bassett may still be a bit of a lightweight for her latest role — Amanda Waller, better known as the harsh backbone of the Suicide Squad.

Variety has reported that the star of How Stella Got Her Groove Back has signed onto the film as the large-and-in-charge government-sponsored mastermind, starring opposite Ryan Reynolds. I believe that this is her first superhero film (since I don’t think Masked and Anonymous would quite fit in with the rest of your superhero DVD collection), although she does have the dubious credit of Vampire in Brooklyn, so take that as you will.

For one, I’m interested to see how Waller will impact the storyline, and what DC’s goals are for the character. Comics Alliance, for one, is speculating that Waller will act as a Nick Fury-style character across DC’s future offerings, but I gotta throw out a challenge flag on that one and say that’s putting the cart before the Suicide Squad-murdered-horse — currently, there’s been no word about a shared universe for future films, and Chris Nolan already has spoken for DC’s Big Two by saying they would be “the only superhero” in each of their respective worlds.

Mark Strong on Sinestro

Mark Strong ("Sherlock Holmes," "Kick-Ass") tells USA Weekend that his role of Sinestro in the upcoming "Green Lantern" film for Warner Bros. Pictures will closely mirror the early comics.

"Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan's mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who's made into a Green Lantern. He's certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern. [sinestro] is a military guy but isn't immediately bad. It's the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he's quite a heroic figure" says Strong.

The actor was recently fitted for special contact lenses and the costume/appearance will follow the early look - "That widow's peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven…I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books."

The project is currently filming in New Orleans and is scheduled to hit theatres on June 17th.

Big block of news today. It's a SET VISIT!

Standing in the middle of large soundstage just outside of the New Orleans French Quarter, I slip the bulky green ring onto my finger. It fits well, heavy but solid. Next I’m handed the glowing green lantern. Lighter than I expected, a greenish-yellow light shines from within.

In brightest day, in blackest night

No evil shall escape my sight

Let those who worship evil's might

Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!

If everything goes according to plan, Warner Bros. and DC hope more than the comic faithful will be reciting Green Lantern’s famed oath come June 17th, 2011. While the character (in various incarnations) has been around for more than 60 years, he remains a relative obscurity for the general populous. Despite his longevity, no Green Lantern character has ever made the transition to cinema or television in live action form.

Directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, this will be one of WB’s tentpole releases for summer 2011, with an undisclosed budget likely north of the $200 million range.

Joining Reynolds in the ensemble cast list are Mark Strong as Sinestro, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris, Peter Sarsgaard as Dr. Hector Hammond and Tim Robbins as Senator Robert Hammond.

Hal Jordan is a promising young pilot, talented but cocky and filled with a somewhat misguided need to prove himself since witnessing the death of his father right before his eyes at only ten years of age. After careful consideration, he is chosen by an alien race known as the Guardians to become the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps, a group of intergalactic peace officers that have existed for centuries. Jordan slips the ring on his finger, not yet aware of the great responsibilities his new side job will entail. Before all is said and done, Jordan is put to the task, defending Earth against a powerful and mysterious new enemy known as Parallax.

It is day 101 of 104 and the production approaches the finish line. Dark Horizons is amongst a select group of journalists invited to check out some props, concept art, preview a few scenes of footage and speak with Reynolds, Strong and Campbell.

Our tour begins with a step-by-step look at the film in story order straight from the mouth of Production Designer Grant Major. “The artwork has been done as a developmental process for the film,” Major tells press. “It changes every day. There has been a year and a half of development [and] we’ve made thousands of them.”

Over the next hour, Major takes us through the film from start to finish, from an opening we can’t talk about to the origins of Hal Jordan (which we can’t really talk about either) to a huge climactic sequence that we definitely can’t talk about. Sadly, we are sworn to secrecy on the key story points for now, but we will be able to roll out more details in our full set visit features over the coming months.

Beside the concept art are grey models of the Great Hall, where the Guardians meet in conference, as well as Oa (the home planet for the Green Lantern Corps). In the Oa model, a tiny Sinestro is poised high above speaking to a tiny crowd below.

As most fans already know, Reynold’s complex Green Lantern costume is being created entirely in post production, which requires the actor to don a motion capture suit, yellow dots covering the suit and all areas of exposed skin, face included.

“You feel about as threatening as Betty White when you put it on,” Reynolds jokes of the suit. “But you see the concept drawings, motion studies and you really find it that way. I think once I got behind the reasons behind it wasn’t an actual suit, that this is actually sort of a bio weapon that he’s wearing. You’ve got to get over the feeling stupid in a grey unitard thing pretty quickly if you’re going to do 104 days of shooting in it.”

cemet_gallery.jpg

Reynolds has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the comic book world. A noted comic fan, the actor was long-rumored to be the top choice to portray The Flash, a long gestating project that has never quite gotten off the ground. In the meantime, Reynolds landed a role as Deadpool in Wolverine. When it came time to revisit The Flash, the project still hadn’t received the green light. Instead, Reynolds was approached to play another DC hero, a character which he admitted to have little familiarity with.

The actor says he wasn’t terribly interested in Green Lantern initially, though he was intrigued at the possibility of working with the accomplished Campbell. “When Martin took me to the art department, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” Reynolds says of the concept artwork. “What I fell in love with was the scope, more than anything. Hal’s story is steeped in tragedy. He witnesses [the death of his father] first hand. He’s ten years old and that will stay with him forever. If it does work, I see it going so far beyond Hal Jordan. There’s so much to tell.”

Reynolds was one of eight actors considered for the part, including Justin Timberlake, who the director says offered a strong reading but was too young for the part. “It got down to two of them and I have to say that Ryan was always, for me, the choice,” says Campbell. “He has a terrific sense of humor and ultimately he’s a very strong actor.”

Like Reynolds, Campbell admits to some level of reluctance when he was first approached for the project. But when he saw the massive scope Warner Bros. and DC had in mind - part blockbuster action movie, part space epic - how could he say no? “I’d never done a superhero movie before. There’s a lot of blue screen, a lot of technical stuff - everything from the suit to the attention to detail to trying to be true to the origin story. But really you just treat it as seriously as you would Hamlet. A big mistake with this kind of story is not to treat it seriously.”

The role of Sinestro is a complicated character with a long storyline in the Green Lantern world. Although the part Mark Strong as Sinestro consisted of being leader of the Green Lantern Corps and the reluctant mentor to Hal Jordan, he couldn’t help but be aware of the crucial role his character would play should the series continue beyond this first film. “I thought initially the way to play it would be to play what’s in the script and ignore what’s ahead,” Strong tells press. “The truth is, knowing what happens to Sinestro kind of defines the way he behaves in this one. He’s a hard task master for Hal. He’s his mentor as he comes into the corps and he obviously doesn’t believe humans should be [chosen]. So there is a streak of arrogance and danger about him. I see him in this as more of a military commander. They are facing a very difficult enemy, so he is in protection mode, but he’s not evil in this first one.”

Campbell filmed the majority in sequence as much as possible, offering his actors the chance to ground their characters in reality before things really get boiling. “In the scenes where we’re on the Earth as you know it, you get perspective,” says Reynolds. “So you can kind of carry that reality into the space scenes [and] you really have context. If we had started the movie doing the stuff we’re doing right now - the blue screen, creating the Oa world - that would have been difficult to do at the beginning. I kind of get to take Hal, the Earthling version, into that world.”

Along with the interviews, we were shown a brief bit of pre-visual (computer mock-up footage similar to an animated version of the film) and a few early scenes from the film of Hal before he is approached by the corps. If the pre-vis can be replicated in live action form, this superhero space opera will certainly be a sight to behold. As for the Jordan footage, Reynolds is sharp, his trademark wit clearly in tact when he informs a character telling him to “Watch his back” that doing so would be technically impossible.

The Green Lantern is slated for release in 3D on June 17th, 2011. We’ll have more from the set in the coming months.

Geoffrey Rush joins the cast

Geoffrey Rush will voice the role of Tomar-Re, a key member of the Green Lantern Corps. in the upcoming big-budget "Green Lantern" movie for Warner Bros. Pictures says Heat Vision.

In the comics, Tomar-Re was a scientist before joining the intergalactic police corps where he was instrumental in training new members including Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).

The Martin Campbell-directed film is currently being rushed through post-production to complete its extensive visual effects. Adding voice overs for completely CG characters this late in a film's process is not that uncommon. Michael Clarke Duncan was linked to the role of Kilowog yesterday.

Included below is a shot of Rush's character Tomar-Re as seen in the first trailer:

Just saw it. And my initial reaction was Meh. Some nice little action scenes, good (sometimes great) effects. The CGI did at times make it seem a bit cartoonish, but in a movie like this, it works.

The story however just falls flat. The writers did not seem to know what to focus on, so at times it is all over the place. And when they do get the focus, it is on the wrong thing. And a thing firmly planted in the middle of the movie turned out to just be a setup for the sequel.

The expected grand finale was a huge disappointment (and incredibly stupid).
