Who cares if I live in the country....a deer is in the front yard! And our front yard is mostly open and without trees....its really quite fascinating to me right now that this deer is out in the open like this....

Ooh, that'd be scary. I remember going on a camping trip to Minnesota with my grandparents, two uncles and an aunt....the younger uncle and I shared a tent (I was like under ten so yeah) and one night he kept telling me there was a bear outside every time something brushed by the tent.....oh, and also on that trip to Minnesota we saw a moose....he kinda got in our way while we driving....pretty cool actually.

the only thing i can see in the garden of the building i'm leaving in is my neighbour from the first floor sunbathe and that's quite scary ! LOL

Put a salt block in your yard and they'll visit all the time!! They like corn too!! I had a feeder in my back yard, but the kids kept messing with it and the deer didn't like that. They still visit all the time though!

Well, my grandparents who live next door usually grow corn and I live on thirteen and a half acres of land that's got plenty of trees and stuff (along with a really nice big and dry pond, lol!). So, it makes sense that deer would be around...I just have never seen one stay around for so long before!

*looks pale*

13.5 achres??!!??!! yish!! that is the biggest plot of land ive heard of!! lol!!!! over that would be in the millions....very high millions....Jea you are so so so lucky!!! as for deer...you are lucky to see a dear in a deer reserve here to be honest...there are very few. As for bears...none whatsoever. deer is probably the most interesting thing we have :(

I live in the countryside here in Wales, so get all sorts of wildlife...it is great! We have seen over 60 different species of birds, deer, foxes, badgers, mice, rats, voles, moles...and more that I can't think of! But it is brilliant! :D

Wow, I didn't know 13 and a half acres would be worth so much elsewhere....although, I do believe we got it at a bit of a cheaper price than most considering we're in good standing with the lady who sold us the land....

Posted

13 and 1/2 acres up here would be a lot, and we got our plot for even cheaper, we have I think 19 acres, and well, Mom and Dad bought it in '84 (I think) and they've been living here ever since.

Posted

When we bought our land....an acre lot cost the same amount as what we paid...although, we only got ten acres at first and then bought the other 3 and a half later....I think 3 and a half acres was the same or higher in cost than the original ten!

*stares*

over here, 19 achres is an exceedinly good portion of a county (the equivilent of a US state)....basically its almsot unheard of to be able to buy that much land unless you are super rich...or have inhedited it due to farming

Posted

Actually, we don't use all of it. There's a field of maybe 6 acres in front of our house, then there's maybe a 3 acre field down by the river that runs out back, so only about 10 of it is usable.

Posted

Oh wow....and to think the people behind us have over 100 acres and so do the people across the street.....

Posted

19 Acres isn't *that* much Northie *lol*. It's about the size of the standard farm here :) And it's certainly not the size of a US state ;) *amused* You moose!! *giggles*

*pat pats Northie*

Well, keep in mind, the UK is two teeny tiny little islands (and the only have part of one of them). There's not as much land to go around there. The US is the third or fourth largest country in the world by land mass.

I see deer occasionally here in Roswell. We've preserved our greenspace pretty well, so theres all sorts of wildlife. I had a chipmunk sitting on my back steps a few days ago, which was very cute. He ran away when I got the camera though. The cutest thing is the bunnies though. I'm right next to the Chattahoochee river, so when we go for walks along the banks we'll see rabbits hopping around everywhere. So adorable!

When I lived in Peachtree City, which is in a rural area, we had deer coming into the yard all the time. Once, my sister saw two bucks fighting each other in our back yard. My parents shi-tzu goes nuts over the deer at night. Somehow she knows they are out there and will start yapping at the windows.

True, 19 acres is nowhere near the size of a US state....I'm in Missouri in a small town by the name of Lone Jack....and like I mentioned earlier, the people behind us and the people across the street both own over a 100 acres....in fact, a lot of people in Lone Jack own a lot of land.

We also have quite a few rabbits around here, not to mention foxes, which I have seen one of those. We probably have some coyote around here as well. And, as far as I know, our dogs don't bark at much during the night....then again, I'm usually asleep when they are, lol!

I want to say Northie might have just been saying that a county in England is kind of like a State in the US... not meaning size-wise... but I could be wrong... lol. Because I thought the same thing when I first read it... lol.

That is apparently, what she meant ;) But yeah, it's not that large a portion of a county either. *lol*

And actually the UK is made up of about 6,000 Islands *grins* Hence, the British Isles ;) Though that's including Ireland too.

We have some crazy deer here. We live in a town of about 9,000 people, there's a lot of forested areas for deer to hide in outside of town, and the deer have been known to walk right through downtown instead of staying mostly hidden. I can't plant beans in my backyard raised beds or the deer come and eat them and we're near the middle of a fairly large neighborhood. Luckily they don't seem to like many of the plants we purposely put in the rest of the yard.

One of the funniest things I've seen was a group of five deer who just happened to be crossing the street (going very slowly in front of my car) at a crosswalk. They have pretty much no fear of cars, since most of the roads in town are 25mph max and people usually slow down even further to stare at them (annoying when you're trying to get somewhere).

We also have an otter who trots around in the far northeast corner of town (also a downtown shopping district). They named a restaurant after him. I like him much better than the deer, since he doesn't eat my garden and is smart enough to stay out of the road when there are cars coming. ;)

lol! How funny! According to mom, the deer around here have been eating the rose's off of her rose bushes....she's not too happy about that....as for the rest of the stuff we plant and grow....as far as I know they don't mess with that (then again, I hate garden work so I probably wouldn't know about any of that....).

I only have five acres but I live right next to an open space of 6,000! Also, there was a rattlesnake in my garage yesterday. Just thought you might like to know that. My boyfrind offed it with a shovel. :P
