*grins* There you are! I was about to send a search party for you. ;)

Welcome to the Kin forums, darling Ogier! :D I'll take you up on that drink, just be careful our resident Pirate crew doesn't steal it all and hold it for ransom. *blinks* I hope I didn't just give them an idea... *coughs*

Twinny is the queen of socks, so be careful mentioning them around her. *grins* She'll get your address and the next thing you know, you'll be in the sock family, too. I need to count how many pairs I can credit my dear Sistertwin with that I have waiting on winter in my closet. *grins*

And I don't have a clue how to knit. I can crochet and cross stitch; I can sew and scrapbook. But I can't knit. *grins* So, they're yarn free and ready for poking... ;)

;D We got lost a ways back... :D  Hi mentor mine!

I don't usually think of myself as a crafts person, because I'm not much good at any of it, really. My kids, bless them, think I'm a great crafter, because I've helped them with their little projects from school etc. But I'm not patient enough with my crafting. I've gotten some better, because age has slowed me down.  :)

But, looking back, everywhere I've been, I've done some sort of craft activity. Mother taught me to sew and I made most of my own clothing in high school. In England it was knitting and crochet first, then brass rubbing. I have since forgotten how to knit (I only made scarves because it didn't require keeping track of any drops or addins *lol*).  And as nephi can vouch, I've been unable to contribute any hexagonal shaped pieces of crochet for the quilt, despite hours of trying.  ::) The brass rubbing stopped when we left England. In Japan, it was punch-picture enbroidery. Again, patience was lacking. Still I do have two that I'm very proud of. I regret that I never finished my dragon. I threw it away before I ever started WoT. Isn't that the way it always is? As soon as you throw something out or give it away, you find you need it or want it back for some reason.  :D  In Texas, it was all about jewelry. I strung beads for school and Scout projects like you wouldn't believe! I still have beads in my odds'n'ends box, what my daughter called the Barney Bag.

So why do I do it if I'm so bad at it?  I like to be creative. I wonder why that is? Maybe that's what makes us special as humans - we like creating and inventing.  :-\

How long have you been crafting? :)

wow lori, didn't know that about ya.

As for me, my creativity is fairly limited. when I was younger I had a pretty strong imagination that you wouldnt beleive, but like most people it faded when i got older. as such it's very difficult for me to be inspired to do somthing creative that isn't practicle in some manner. In short: i cant draw, paint or sculpt very well because I just cant find inspiration. I however do have some minor channels of creativity: pottery and blade smithing. I've done pottery for about 2 years now getting progressivly better. my pieces aren't extrodinary but their practicality mixed with a decrotive sense makes them relatively excellent. Just using a potters wheel is also fairly relaxing for me and a good way just to releive stress from my other occupations outside of school.

More gloriously for me I also happen to be a blade smith. Ive been making customized knives for about 4 years now after learning from my father. I have a bit over 30 pieces that i can consider success stories and am currently trying to gather funds to complete my next project. with my smithing I mix the two worlds of Ornamental weaponry and practicle tools to be used. In general I make knives of my own design and style that is unlike most blades devised which binds an attraction to most people whom i sell them to. 29 of my successful pieces have been sold so that i could fund this hobbie as well as help plan for colledge. the one original piece that i keep is the first knife i ever made, and not being glorius i like it as best as my most elaborate work.

That's so cool! How do you make a knife? Do you have to smith it at a forge etc.? I have no clue how that sort of thing works. Or can you buy blanks for the blades and just sharpen them? Do you carve the handles for them? :)

Creativity???  What's that?  I don't have an ounce of it myself.  :-[

Winds, that is so cool!  I've always wanted to learn how to forge blades.  Sadly the only blacksmiths I know are farriers so they tend to make things pretty dull.  ;)

Knife making is actually a simple art after you get the hang of it. Tedious but simple. The way I do it is this:

step 1: create a design on paper w/ all mesurements and notations on it. Pretty much it's where you take the materials you have or are ordering and putting them together.

step two: using chalk pencil the design of the metallic "blank" on a used circular sawblade. recycles the blade after a it's usefullness and is made of still high grade steel.

step 3: take a cutting torch or plasma cutter and cut the blank out of the metal. usually giving about 1/4" extra room for error.

After these beginning steps you go through the process of cleaning the metal and checking the metal for imperfections such as cracks or craters. for this I use a grinder to take off rust and other imperfections  off of high grade steel and less ornamental blades, for low grade or very decrotive knives i use a low grade acid and let it eat away the rust for about 24 hrs.

after the blank is clean you go into the process of removing the temper by quick heating the metal and letting it cool in the air. If you quench the metal it puts the temper back into the metal making it very difficult to work with. after the blade is cool you simply take a heavy grinder to grind basic shape. then use presison grinders and sandbelts to create the finer parts like the edge. then you re-temper the blade so that it hardens the blade edge will now keep it's edge for a longer peirod than when you would sharpen after the tempering.

after tempering you take the "shank" or the hand guard/ cross guard and put it into place using sodder to attach it firmly to the blank. Depending on what kind of "tang" of the knife you prefer you can attach the wooden handle in a few ways. Finally use a polisher and highgrade sander to polish the blade and sand down the handle to a comfortable fit.

after that point I would either use electrolisis to stensil on patterns for the blade. or I would engrave certain things before the retempering process.

That's awesome, Winds! It sounds tedious but very rewarding. I collect swords and blades, myself! :D

As for my creativity... it's a curse sometimes. I do a lot of things, and I'm not sure when I started. I remember my mother teaching me to cross stitch when I was in middle school, but I don't think that was the first thing I did. I remember my teacher showing me how to weave yarn in 5th grade and I kept doing it afterwards for a long time. lol, crafts have always been a big part of home life for me, so I'm honestly not sure what my first dip into it was or when it happened. It's been a fluid progression and now I have an "office and craft room" that holds all the stuff so it doesn't explode all over the house. lol

I can cross stitch, crochet, scrapbook, make cards, do SOME embossing, SOME quilling, I sew shawls and dresses (mostly for D*con and dance), paint by number (the hard ones... they're not as easy as they look), and I'm currently helping my husband build a dollhouse for my daughter. lol, when you throw in the other various crafty things I get into, you can see why it needs a room all to itself.

When I'm not doing that stuff, I collect and plan things to do for my class (I teach 4th grade), I write (about a hundred different stories at once), I dance (clogging... don't laugh), I play BUNCO with my MiL and a bunch of other older ladies and I love gardening.

And that's just in my spare time (which I don't have much of these days, thanks to my little 10 month old baby). *grins* That sounds like a lot of stuff, doesn't it?

:o Lor, I got tired just reading about all that.  ;) ;D

I'm trying to encourage the Builders at the Stedding to branch out into other things besides just building. The Brewers do the cooking, along with their brewing, and the dancing and partying preps etc. But I'm hoping that some of the new Ogier will decide to do some craft demos over at the Stedding, as their tasks for the Elder Builder. Or show us some pics of some of the things they've made. *nods*

Well, my dear Ogier, Have you all rested up? We still have one more stop, and it's the scari best, of course. *wonders if maybe we should take some of the Kin to Shayol Ghul to protect us*  :D

Time to load the llamas, Tig!  ;) *packs up the hot tub and tiki bar*
